Collins applauds Trump's pick for Supreme Court

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court:

“President Trump showed America his commitment to conservative principles with tonight’s Supreme Court nomination,” Congressman Collins said. “Judge Neil Gorsuch will be a strong voice on the Court for years to come.

"I fully anticipate that he will continue interpreting laws as they are written and defend the constitutionally protected rights all Americans hold dear. I urge my Democrat colleagues in the Senate to recognize the clear message American voters sent on Election Day and quickly confirm Judge Gorsuch.”

James Renfrew

Congressman, your appeal to bi-partisanship would carry more weight if you admitted that this seat has been stolen. Judge Garland was not even given a hearing, he was simply shut out by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Should this behavior be rewarded?

In economics there's something known as the sunk cost fallacy.

Simplified, but the idea is: if you spend $100 on a ticket to a basketball game and then a snow storm comes along that makes travel to the game hazardous, you should evaluate your decision based on the facts on the storm, not the sunk cost of the $100 for the ticket. The $100 is spent, you're not getting it back, so your decision should be based solely on the safety of the travel, as if you got the ticket for free.

What's in the past is past. Did the Dems get screwed over by the GOP on Garland? Yes. Does it matter now? No.

Gorsuch should be evaluated on his qualifications and principles. Any other calculation would be putting party ahead of country.

I understand what James is saying. But the GOP only did what Sen. Chuck Schumer and then Sen. Joe Biden said they would do with George Bush, when they thought there might be a Court opening at the end of Bush's term.

Then there's this:

It's time to stop the partisan infighting and bullying and get to doing the people's will. The elected representatives in the Congress are determined by what the majority of "interested" citizens want [the vote]. For the minority party to spend [waste] time and money on simply trying to block the majority is an affront to the people of the nation [at least those who bother to be involved and vote]. Obama's selection for the SCOTUS was NOT stolen. The Republican party controlled both the House and Senate at the time and it should have been obvious to anyone with a brain, that a Liberal/leaning judge would never be approved. If Obama was truly concerned and resolved to fill the vacancy he should have chosen a moderate judge who would appeal to both sides of the isle. HE DIDN'T! Was it because he has no brains, or he's more committed to his legacy of being a divisive, antagonistic, 'community organizer', malcontent? Yea, yea, yea, I know... those wicked Republicans refused Obama's choice simply because they are All racists.

"The 2014 elections gave the Republicans control of the Senate (and thus control of both houses of Congress) for the first time since the 109th Congress. With 247 seats in the House of Representatives and 54 seats in the Senate, this Congress began with the largest Republican majority since the 71st Congress of 1929–1931."

I am not a Republican, I voted for Trump on the Conservative line. Besides IMO Trump was/is not a Republican [certainly not Establishment]. Regardless after Nov 2016 the Republicans control the House, Senate, and Presidency... so let's get over it. Rather than working to stop the Republicans, the effort would be better spent [I would even join in] to assure that the 'majority Republicans' DO NOT return to the failed ideology of the past 'Establishment GOP'. Pressure the Trump administration to bring in some Libertarians, Independents, Reagan Democrats [Jim Webb], (but any progressive political operatives who believe that the Constitution is outdated and needs to be rewritten... need not apply). To make America great again requires that America become whole again, just as the Founders were. They disagreed, debated and argued, but at the end of the day their focus was unified, to form a Democratic Republic based on Liberty... and they succeeded. We have since improved it, and then messed it all up.

Obviously, I'm no partisan. I would say, opposition has its place. Our system was designed to balance opposing forces, checks and balances. If the Democrats make a principled stand using the legal rules of engagement, I don't have a problem with that. But when either party uses rules merely to advance the party over the country's interest, then that's wrong, I think. We've seen too much of that in recent years.

This is why we voted for TRUMP !! Im Hoping Neil Gorsuch Can work with the Republicans to overturn The Hideous SAFE ACT that drove me away from my Home and friends in NY. Remember he was approved by unanimous voice vote my the senate in 2008..MAGA!!!

Brian Graz is so off the mark. You think Garland is a Liberal?? Far from it. In fact, he was a darling of the Republican establishment until Obama advanced his name. You guys can't rewrite history. Then there is Randy who was "driven out of NY because of the SAFE Act". What scary thought processes. You guys won and Trump is the President. I did not back him but I do hope he succeeds. Unlike our Senate Majority Leader, who was proud to state his agenda was to make Obama a one term President, I do wish our President success. I hope you will hold his feet to the fire the way you would any Democrat? Are you outraged about the backpeddling on who will pay for his famous wall? Do you think it is healthy that he is picking fights with the leadership of Australia? Yes, AUSTRALIA??? Oh by the way, Randy and his friends may need more than guns now that it seems Trump is hell bent on provoking war with Iran. And let's not overlook the Hypocrisy of Spicer when he says that the opposition to Trump "should stop acting like babies". Was McConnell a baby when he was in oppostion to Obama? Again, it really bothers me that it seems you guys want to have it both ways. Let's just stick to the facts and leave the Alternative Facts aside.

Scott, on one point. Did you wonder why Australia will not take the refugees it has? They have them in camps outside the country. Why are they willing to take/trade people from South America, but not the ones they have? Maybe this is not a great idea?

Howard. If I read the article (from the BBC link) correctly, the Australian gov't (taxpayers) paid a (reported) $10,500,000 USD/per "refugee", for their resettlement.

Why not just hand them 10-million dollars, and let them settle in Madonna's back yard?

And, if the "refugees" are men, from what I heard her say (on video - so I know she really DID say it), she'd probably give them a welcoming gift they'd never forget.

Heck, they'd probably forget all about the "70 virgins". You know - it could be the new age adage, "A bird on my land gets one from 'The Bush' ".

Howard, neither link states why Australia will not take these people, but will trade them for people from Latin America. Something is not right.
