No, not unless everyone who owns a car, a boat, a knife, swimming pool or any other object that could cause harm has to also. The very idea is stupid on the face of it.

This is the most creative... and dangerous idea the usurpers of our constitutional rights have come up with in a while. It is the kind of idea that could get many corporatist oligarchs wide eyed and salivating at the thought of such a tidy and profitable theft. And oligarchs are not only keen to put profits way out in front of anyone's rights, even basic human rights, let alone constitutional guarantees, they are also very astute at investing their ill gotten gains to do just that.

"The insurance law is amended by adding a new section 2353 to read as follows:
§ 2353. FIREARM OWNERS INSURANCE POLICIES. 1. ANY PERSON IN THIS STATE WHO SHALL OWN A FIREARM SHALL, PRIOR TO SUCH OWNERSHIP, OBTAIN AND CONTINUOUSLY MAINTAIN A POLICY OF LIABILITY INSURANCE IN AN AMOUNT NOT LESS THAN ONE MILLION DOLLARS SPECIFICALLY COVERING ANY DAMAGES RESULTING FROM ANY NEGLIGENT OR WILLFUL ACTS INVOLVING THE USE OF SUCH FIREARM WHILE IT IS OWNED BY SUCH PERSON. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN SUCH INSURANCE  SHALL RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE REVOCATION OF SUCH OWNER’S REGISTRATION, LICENSE AND ANY OTHER PRIVILEGE TO OWN SUCH FIREARM."

The $1mm seems a bit high. Require the same limits as are put on vehicles.

Of course, responsible gun owners will, like responsible car owners, opt for higher coverage to help protect themselves.

What about an unseen Hornet`s Nest on your property? More People Die each year from Bee Stings than from LEGALLY Registered Gun Owners On Their Own Property!!

Funny thing about that unseen hornets nest on your property... If you didn't know it existed, it's an act of nature.

Now.. if you KNEW there was a hornets next on your property and were informed your neighbor was allergic, yet you did not get rid of it, you are liable. But you know what? Your homeowner's insurance would cover you. You're already covered.

Very strange how the law Ed posted called firearm ownership a Privilege, all this time I was under the impression that owning a firearm was a Right. The Amendments to the constitution are now Privileges . Somebody wake me I'm having a nightmare..

Your right to travel in a "mode of transport of the day" is also a right granted. However through some phuckery they have turned driving into a "privilege" also. So now they can tax your rights. You pay sales tax when you buy the vehicle, then you pay a registration and plate TAX, an inspection TAX, additionally you will pay this registration and inspection TAX, every two years and one year respectively. Now on to the insurance TAX, which insurance is regulated by the TAXING body. Dont forget the tax you pay everytime you fuel the vehicle or drive on a toll road.
This is what they plan to do to your firearms. You will need to register each one and pay a tax....oops we have that already.
Next you will need to get insurance for each one.....TAX
Then when you buy ammo, TAX
Want to use it for hunting because your hungry? Buy a permit to shoot some food. (TAX)
want to shoot a rabbit, small game TAX
want to shoot a dear, large game tax
Dont have money for a gun insurance and bullet tax? Starve, or hunt illegally and goto jail for trying to eat.
This is not the america i grew up in, and its phucking sad.

Tim, owning a firearm is a right under the Constitution. I should never have to buy insurance to exercise a right.
Driving a car is not a right.
But, I guess if you feel gun owners should be mandated to have insurance, then everybody who posts here, under Freedom of Speech, should be required to have insurance also. Same principle. You want to exercise a right, you have to have insurance.

Howard, are you mandated by New York State law to have libel insurance, with penalties incurred for not having it, including jail time, or is it a choice? If it were the law, and you refuse to carry, should your First Amendment Rights be suspended forever: see the Safe Act.

It's not mandated.

But that's not how I took "have to." I shouldn't have to buy libel insurance but it's the best way to protect my assets.

FWIW: If Second Amendment supporters don't start backing some reforms that help protect and save lives then in the long run, they're going to lose. Mark my words, there will be a movement, with a high probability of success, at some point, to repeal the Second Amendment. People are getting pretty fed up with gun violence, especially in urban areas, where there's more of them then there are of us.

I don't want to see a repeal. I think people should have the right to own firearms. We've never amended the Constitution to remove rights. It would set a bad precedent.

Also, gun owners are the most knowledgeable people about firearms. They should be the ones writing the laws aimed at protecting lives, not anti-gun advocates.

I think 2A supporters are going in a very bad direction for all of us in opposing each and every reform that comes along.

I think insurance makes a hell of a lot of sense when compared to laws that ban specific kinds of firearms or lead to gun confiscation.

If conservatives had been smart they would have been offering insurance as an alternative to the SAFE Act. With the Democrats taking of the NYS Senate it's probably too late to make that kind of bargain.

Governor Cuomo is against New York Citizens having NRA self-defense insurance.
https://ijr.com/cuomo-nra-insurance/ and many responsible guns owners have it to have the best legal defense available to protect their due process rights.

Here is a link to another https://www.uslawshield.com/concealed-carry-insurance-chart-2/?utm_sour…{creative}&utm_term=%2Bself%20%2Bdefense%20%2Binsurance&msclkid=9cf9e30c371e15d92b87bf1ee942a9b9

This type of insurance has always been available.

Howard, we have the Safe Act, which Liberals call reform , so what more would really make anyone safe? And the insurance idea does nothing in any way at all to make anyone safe. It's just harassment and a money grab (the State will take a piece of the action).

One thing the State could do is send people who use a gun in a crime to a real mandatory, long term, prison sentences.

Virtually every instance of mass shootings has been perpetrated by someone who tipped their hand to people who either did, or should have alerted authorities. As with Broward County Florida, the perp was allowed to babble on and on about his intentions, sometimes while holding an automatic weapon.
Trying to overturn the 2nd amendment will be the beginning of civil war.

You will wear a helmet! - you can't have that gun! - the governing puppet zombies have US on the run. They do So enjoy their powers over you!! You'll do as we say! -- and you'd best like it too! Just wave the flag & everything's good -- but it no longer stands for the the things that it should. It now shows obedience to a new status quo. A criminal government has taken control. These are all things the founders foretold. If you facetime MAINSTREAM MEDIA you help dig the hole -- deeper and deeper -- till the hole is so deep that we'll all have been buried -- without making a peep.
