Today's Poll: Should the National Guard troops be deployed to the Mexican border?

I believe there is a big difference between using active military for domestic law enforcement vs for national security purpose. I assume that the illegal border crossings would be considered a national security issue. Besides some are citing the Posse Comitatus Act... this is a total JOKE [ask the Branch Davidians].

"On January 11, 2010, President Obama signed Executive Order (EO) 13528 [right after the over-hyped Flight 253 ‘terrorist’ attack, the fraudulently engineered Swine Flu pandemic and a few other man-made disasters] that, among other things, establishes a Council of Governors, chosen by the President who, as noted by the Intel Daily, will rubber-stamp long-sought-after Pentagon contingency plans to seize control of state National Guard forces in the event of a ‘National Emergency.’ EO 13528 egregiously subverts the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, by synchronizing and integrating state National Guard units with those of the Armed Forces and place them under the control of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) that was hastily created in 2002, allegedly to help fight the ‘War on Terror’."

Howard, the 82nd. is NOT regular army!! They have three brigades: Ready, Deployment, and Home Brigade. The Eighty Deuce is Our Nation`s Premier Fighting Division. When things get real serious, the phone rings at Fort Bragg! They will never leave America as a Division, hence the term "America`s Honor Guard" Their "Ready" Brigade boasts "That Upon Notification, Troopers From The 82nd. Will Deploy, Parachute Into, AND Be Self-Sustaining, Anywhere In The World,,, Within 18 Hours! Anyone who tells a Jumper that he is a straight leg boot, or "Regular" Army, better know how to fight!! ALL THE WAY!!

Everything you just described puts them in the Army, not the National Guard. Full-time, military fighting force, prohibited by law from domestic enforcement.

Okay, I concur with the "Full Time Active Military" HOWEVER,,,, The 82nd. has been used in the past for Riot Control in Detroit, and to Escort Minority Students to All White Schools in the South. Howard, I respect you as a Journalist AND a Veteran. Thank-You for your service. To All Veterans! 'To commemorate... To Educate... and To Heal...'

John, yes it is. Crossing the border by non-combatants is a crime, not an act of war. Being in the country without documentation is a civil offense (not even a criminal offense but more like a parking ticket). And since they would be on our side of the border (domestic) and since they would be asked to enforce civilian laws, it would not be a lawful use of the military.

Thomas, were these active duty members or reserves? The 82nd does have a reserve.

Well, I know they have an association. In order to stay on active duty, you must jump every other month or so. In `57 Ike deployed Jumpers to Arkansas to escort 9 black girls to an all white public school guarded by,,, the National Guard. During the Race Riots of the sixties, Jumpers from the Eighty Deuce were sent to Detroit, and Washington DC (MLKing) to assist local, state, and federal troops/police to maintain order. Unless you can jump, you can not claim to be a Paratrooper. You must volunteer TWICE to wear the double A`s. After AIT, you volunteer for three weeks of Hell at Ft. Benning Georgia. The washout rate is very high, but that is the ONLY WAY you earn a set of Jump Wings! All branches of the Military MUST survive ground week, tower week, and Jump Week. Five successful jumps. If you google "All-American Legacy` 100 years of the 82nd. The only other Airborne Brigade is the 173rd. Brigade (SEP) This does not include S.O.G Seals, Rangers, Special Forces, Force Recon U.S.M.C. Again Thanks to you and all veterans! p.s. There is a Memorial for Sgt. Shaina Schmigel near the Old Hospital off Main St. Batavia. She was a Jumper.
