Trump signs firefighter cancer registry bill authored by Collins

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Congressmen Chris Collins (NY-27) and Bill Pascrell Jr. (NJ-09) today celebrated President Trump signing H.R. 931, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, into law. The legislation they authored together will require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop and maintain a voluntary registry to collect data regarding the incidence of certain cancers in firefighters.

This registry will allow researchers to have a greater understanding of the impacts that smoke inhalation and other occupational hazards have on a firefighter’s health, and lead to better treatment options.

“The brave men and women who selflessly keep our communities safe while fighting fires deserve for us to do everything in our power to also keep them out of harm’s way while they are on duty,” Collins said. “We currently have a lack of information about how being exposed to certain fires will impact a firefighter’s health, and this is a common sense way to collect that data to improve protocols and equipment.

"I express my deepest gratitude for our nation’s firefighters and first responders, and take pride in knowing that this registry could lead to reforms that will save lives.”

“I’m proud that this legislation has been signed into law. The Firefighter Cancer Registry will bring together information on firefighters’ history to help doctors and researchers find any connections between firefighters’ work and increased risk for cancer,” said Pascrell, co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus.

“This will improve the safety of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every single day. This legislation has long enjoyed bipartisan support because all of us want to protect those who protect the rest of us. Thank you representatives Chris Collins and Frank Pallone, and senators Bob Menendez and Lisa Murkowski for your efforts getting this bill through Congress and into law. I look forward to working closely with the CDC and members of the firefighting community to see that the new registry is implemented to its fullest use.”

“Day after day, firefighters all across the country are quick to answer the call of duty. Whether they do so in volunteer service or as a career, they put their communities first on a daily basis without question,” said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Health Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX).

“This commonsense bill will create a national registry to better document the physical toll these everyday heroes undertake and help lead to better treatment options. We look forward to seeing this registry come to fruition and applaud Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) for his leadership on this issue.”

The Firefighter Cancer Registry Act authorizes $2 million in federal funds to the CDC from FY2018 to FY2022. Data gathered would include a number of potential risk factors, including but not limited to the status of the firefighter (volunteer, paid-on-call, or career), number of years on the job, the number of incidents attended, and the type of incidence.

The collection of this data would allow for improved equipment, enhanced safety protocols and preventative techniques for our firefighters.

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 931, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2017, by unanimous consent on June 22, 2018. H.R. 931 first passed the House in September 2017, by voice vote. The Senate passed the bill, with an amendment, in May by unanimous consent. H.R. 931 was signed into law today by President Donald Trump.

Maxine Waters has a rival for vitriolic, hateful name calling and bombastic comments, when Tim said, “my guess is Collins is with the rest of his NRA whore cronies.” The NRA is five-million-strong and growing. Thank you, Tim, for telling us what you think of NRA Members in Congressman Collin's District. Did you know that Democrats are NRA members?

Rich - thank you for misreading my comment so badly. Very impressive.

I did not make a single comment about NRA membership. I used the phrase "NRA whore cronies" - this was a reference to those members of congress (Collin's cronies) who are whores of the NRA - they take the NRA's money, and do the NRA's bidding, regardless of what their NRA masters demand. Funny you don't mention a single thing about Collins (or his whore cronies in congress) not allowing a similar study on gun deaths in the US as Collins supported for firefighters.

I miss the days when the NRA's main focus was promoting gun safety. I was an NRA member many years ago, and a fine gentleman who belonged to the NRA taught a bunch of kids proper shooting techniques (safety, aiming, etc). It was a great way to spend a Monday evening. Now, the NRA's main focus is to simply push legislation that allows anybody to own any firearm. Granted, they took a tiny step back after the Vegas massacre by stating "maybe, just maybe, bump stocks shouldn't be allowed." Sadly, a very vocal minority of NRA members made a huge stink, and who knows if anything will come from that baby-step back?

Anyways, I digress....
NRA members? Many are decent people, simply wishing to enjoy their firearms for hunting, sport, and defense.
NRA leaders/administration? Vile, uncaring creatures
NRA whores (and, yes, some are Dems)? Vile, immoral cretins.

And Rich - Good luck with that tremendously needed reading comprehension class.

Maxine, I mean, Tim, I didn't misread anything. That is a false narrative. Your words, "my guess is Collins is with the rest of his NRA whore cronies.” If you were an NRA Member, you would know the NRA Administration is elected by the members. Fact; You will receive a ballot in your American Rifleman Magazine. The NRA is one of the oldest Civil Rights Groups in our Republic. The members direct their democratically elected officials. If you actually read an NRA magazine, rather than accepting the opinions, half-truth, and false rhetoric of Anit-Civil Rights Politicians; you would know we don't want everybody, criminals and the mentally ill to own a firearm, let alone any firearm. Reading your response, false rhetoric begets more false rhetoric.

So the membership is responsible for craziness like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPl1boVxeGA

... journalists should be curb stomped ...

Calling for violence against journalists is a direct assault on the First Amendment.

There is no 2nd Amendment without a First Amendment. Authoritarians go after a free press before they start trying to take away guns.

I don't see how anybody who calls themselves a defender of the Constitution tolerates this sort of hateful rhetoric against a free press.

If members are in control of the NRA, how does Dana Loesch still have a job?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

There is no free speech without a 2nd Amendment. See Russia, Iran, North Korea, China or other totalitarian countries.

Lenin said, "One man with a gun can control 100 without one." How is free speech working out in Russia?

Every totalitarian government goes for the guns first and then the Press afterward; See Nazi Germany. My 92-year-old aunt Trudy lived through it.

Some don't agree with Dana Loesch. They want her removed and silenced.

I can't understand how a defender of the Freedom of Speech, and the !st Amendment want to silence the rights of non-journalist to express themselves.

The Supreme Court unanimously reaffirms: There is no ‘hate speech’ exception to the First Amendment.

The NRA Membership believes the First Amendment and Free of Speech are for everyone and not the exclusive right of Journalists.

Authoritarians always go after a free press first. Always. Before Hitler ever came to power, right-wingers in Germany were attacking the free press. Putin and Erdogan murder and jail journalists. The Philippines is a deadly country for journalists. Everywhere you look, where there was even a period of a free press, as soon as authoritarians rise, they start attacking the media, first by trying to delegitimize it, later through acts of violence and repression. They can't get your guns unless they can control the narrative.

Supporting calls for violence against journalists is not supporting freedom or the First Amendment. That's what happens in totalitarian countries. It is not making America great again. It is moving it further down the path toward one-man rule.

I note you didn't denounce her call for violence so I guess you're OK with violence against journalists.

"I can't understand how a defender of the Freedom of Speech, and the !st Amendment want to silence the rights of non-journalist to express themselves."

Freedom of speech isn't without consequences. It's part of how we maintain a civil society. I'm not calling for government action. I'm noting that people of good moral character call out speech that is reprehensible. Speech has limits. You can't, famously, yell "Fire" in a crowded theater. It's up to society to act collectively to express norms of civil behavior (and there is an equally important role for dissenters to push against those norms). Advocating violence against anybody is reprehensible. There's something terribly wrong with a society that finds such statements acceptable. What's interesting is many of the same people who want to silence the speech of NFL players stand by Loesch's advocacy of violence.

The worldwide attacks on a free press are troubling, and in this country, it didn't start with Trump.

http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/bad-news-press-freedom-under-…

In authoritarian Russia, press freedom is restricted and delegitimized, but any law abiding citizen can own a gun.

https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/09/18/russian-gun-laws-firearm…

Ditto the Philippines

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_Philippines

There are lax gun laws in Turkey with an estimated 9 million owned by private individuals.

http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/turkey

And, btw, while Nazi Germany confiscated guns from Jews and didn't allow Jews to own guns, it had very lax gun laws for everybody else.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/oct/26/ben-cars…

But no freedom of the press.

Ideas are more dangerous than guns. Or, as the old saying goes, "the pen is mightier than the sword."

The Nazi's were not right-wingers. The Nazis were the National Socialist German Workers' Party. Socialists and left-wingers. Left-wingers are the darlings of many journalists, and it is apparent to many of the media's left-leaning.

They can go for your guns when there are a list and a database. It is called registration, and that is what left-wingers and socialists use to confiscate.

Many in the media lie, and I'm including Fox News. We can't trust them to police themselves any more than the mice to guard the cheese. https://www.ranker.com/list/journalists-who-lied/mel-judson

Many people distrust the media and that has consequences. https://news.gallup.com/poll/195542/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-ne…

NFL players signed a contract, (stand for the pledge) and didn't abide by it. They try to hide behind the 1st Amendment. Fans go to games to watch a game, and not be exposed to political opinions and grandstanding. I support their freedom of speech on their own dime. Let the NFL Players purchase their own airtime and see who tunes in. It is reprehensible and interesting how someone would hold up the NFL Players as a model of free speech when many are arrested for violent acts, rapes, assault, etc. See the Buffalo Bills. What kind of society are we when we defend and make excuses for such NFL thug players. https://www.usatoday.com/sports/nfl/arrests/

The Nazi's were right wing. They nationalized industries not for "popular control of the means of production" as a left-leaning socialist would. They nationalized industries for the control and enrichment of the state. They didn't believe in equality for all, as somebody on the left would. They believed in racial superiority and even superiority within the master race. They believed in totalitarian control not as a means toward a more equalitarian future, as communists claimed, but as an end in itself.

There is no question, fascism is a right-wing ideology.

"... that is what left-wingers and socialists use to confiscate. ..." Maybe. And I'm not denying that can't happen but didn't happen in Germany. Isn't happening in Turkey or the Philippines.

So people distrust the media. They also distrust the government. That doesn't mean the media should be threatened with violence or delegitimized. Only somebody hankerin' for dictatorship would think that way.

By the way, you cited Infowars. Go for fake news much?

So NFL players signed a contract. A contract doesn't supersede the First Amendment. A lot of companies require employees to sign NDAs, especially upon termination. Those NDAs rarely withstand a First Amendment challenge. The fact they signed a contract doesn't change the hypocrisy of criticizing them for exercising free speech rights while advocating for violence against journalists.

And now they're thugs (rather racist language) for exercising their Constitutional freedoms?

I'm flabbergasted that you can't denounce this kind of rhetoric, that you try to stretch logic to extremes to defend it.

The Nazi were socialists. In socialist governments, industries are owned and controlled by the government. Fascism is “a system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition. Yes, they were racists.

Fascism and socialism go hand in hand. Let wingers believe in government controlling all aspects of our lives-socialism. Go to many American colleges to see left-wing fascism and the teaching of socialism and intolerance where Conservatives and Republicans are not allowed to organize or speak, with threats and acts of violence. Will you denounce that rhetoric?

Intolerant left-leaning people demonize Conservatives and Conservative Republicans as racists and right-wingers and is a term coined by the media.

Thug is a noun meaning “cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer, or one of a former group of professional robbers and murderers in India.” It not a racist term at all. Alluding to a word “thug,” as rather a racist language because you disagree is something, well some might say is rather intolerant and elitist rhetoric. Calling a common word a racist word is stretching the extremes.

The media is doing a fine job of delegitimating themselves, and especially when they fail to see their shortcomings while attacking those who disagree is the pinnacle of hypocrisy.

Let the NFL player take their contract to court. When they want to resign, I encourage them to exercise their First Amendment Rights in the unemployment line or with paid-for airtime. How many sponsors do you think they will have?

I’m flabbergasted that you won’t denounce the actual violence, committed by NFL players as opposed to perceived violence against journalists.

The Nazis were not socialists/leftists. They chose the "socialist" name in a deceptive move to bring unions and their members to their side, trying to keep them from joining the strengthening communist movement in Germany. It worked.

Read "Fascism - A Warning" by Madeleine Albright - she describes fascist control of various governments throughout the twentieth century. Some started as left-wingers, other as right-wingers. Fascism from her standpoint is a method of control where the leadership takes over control of government, press, industry, and anything else they need. What they cannot control, and what may become their opposition, they tear apart. But the fascists in Germany in 1930 were right-wingers...and apparently their ability to dupe people by including a simple word in their name is still effective.

The Nazis were not socialists. I already explained why. You can choose to believe otherwise but that's just ignoring reality. Hitler nationalized only selected industries to serve his war aims. Much of the German economy remained a market economy. A socialist believes everybody should be seen as equal. Hitler believed everybody should be forced to serve the state. That is not socialism not by any stretch of the imagination.

All fascists are on the right of the political spectrum. They are nationalists and believe only the elite should rule. They do not believe in the collective, as a socialist would.

"The media is doing a fine job of delegitimating themselves ..."

Yeah, telling the truth, honestly and accurately reporting what is going on in the world ... right.

Orwell predicted the day would come when the truth would be called a lie. Here we are.
