Bear spotted in Ham Road area of Alabama

By Howard B. Owens

A bear was spotted in the area of Ham and Knowlesville roads, Alabama, this afternoon.

The reader who saw it didn't have a camera at the moment, but is keeping an eye out in case a photo opportunity presents itself.

Hamm Rd had two M's in the spelling when I lived there 15 years ago. Looking at all the online map programs it's spelled with only one but I seriously doubt it has changed. I'll have to pay attention to the road sign next time I'm over that way.

I also doubt a bear at Hamm & Knowlesville roads would be spotted near Darien Lake just a day before. I realize they roam easily but that's quite a hike in a day, even for a bear in a hurry.

I'd bet my bottom dollar it's not the same one, there's a whole lot of unseen wildlife in this area than people realize.

I'll bet there are bears in the woods around Genesee County Park. Why wouldn't there be? We drove Howard's parents around when they visited recently. The park has a stream, waterfalls, trees and shade galore and lots of wildlife. I'm more afraid of bears than the inner city.
