Burglar breaks into downtown business, makes off with cash from register

By Howard B. Owens

A downtown business was burglarized overnight and the thief got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The break-in was discovered at 10 a.m. when the owner of the Enchanted Florist, 202 E. Main St., Batavia, arrived at work to open the shop for the day.

Det. Rich Schauf said it appears the burglar used a rock to smash a window pane in the back door and went straight for the cash register.

It doesn't appear at this time that anything else was taken.

Mark....what does it matter how much money it was? Even if it was $10 it's still a crime and it still occured in the heart of downtown. Makes a great case for the security of any of the merchants there.

Plus makes downtown look really attractive to prospective businesses. Makes one wonder if putting money into BID's flowers was really a wise investment.

First, some retail businesses count out the next day's drawer the night before so it's ready to go when the doors open.

That's how it was in the retail jobs I worked. I worked in one store where I was the only retail employee. I counted out the drawer from that day's receipts and dropped the rest in a safe for the owner to pick up later.

Second, there's no logical nexus between spending money on flowers and crime downtown. Crime happens everywhere and has occurred throughout human history. Kind of hard to draw any logical conclusions about anything from one burglary.

Sure there is a logical nexus.....BID spending tax dollars making the place pretty to attract new business. While in the same area people are breaking in to steal cash drawers. Perhaps a new streetlamp that brightens the back of that block might have been a better investment.
