Hochul announces she's raised more than $350K for campaign

posted by Howard B. Owens in NY-26, kathy hochul.

Press release:

ERIE COUNTY – Kathy Hochul, candidate for New York’s 26th Congressional District, will report raising more than $350,000 in the first quarter of 2011.

In the report – that will be filed with the Federal Elections Commission today – Hochul will show having more than $300,000 in the bank. There were nearly 450 individual donors who contributed to the campaign, more than 90 percent of whom are residents of New York State.

“Our supporters are excited and committed to helping us win on May 24th,” said Fabien Levy, communications director for Kathy Hochul for Congress.  “More than 50 percent of the donations were at $250 or below, which shows we have strong grassroots support in this race. Western New Yorkers are sending a strong message that they want a fighter to represent them in Congress.”

How much does a Congressional seat cost these days? Ian Murphy thinks it should be free. Yeah Ian, like free will, free choice, free speech, freedom? Right chump, come up with five mil and I'll make the arrangements.

What do candidates spend this money on anyways besides hiring assistants and buying media time to trash talk their opponents.

Dave - Would you rather they not communicate with you at all? As in any other non-profit venture, campaign advertising and getting your message out costs money.

I'd rather they not advertise and communicate with voters through free media, such as The Batavian and hold actual townhall meetings and participate in public debates which ALL candidates are invited to. Instead of misleading, half-truth attack ads and junk mail flyers. But then I'm an idealist.

Media outlets would never let that happen, Dave. There's a lot of money to be had during election season.

Dave - I am surprised to hear that a libertarian would be interested in stifling a persons free speech.

Dan, I said I'd rather, not I want a law. I'm not surprised a statist thinks that because someone doesn't like something, therefor they want a law passed. You got that right, Chris. It always irritates me when the lamestream media ranks candidates based on how much money they have raised. Logically, that would be what they (media outlets) would find most important.
