Stephanie Ann Bonin, 19, of Ross Street, Batavia, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, 4th. Bonin was arrested following an incident reported at 1:24 p.m., Dec. 6, at 4330 Commerce Drive, Batavia. She was allegedly found in possession of an expandable metal baton in her purse.
Joshua John Lein, 34, of Kibbe Avenue, Batavia, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or greater and criminal possession of a controlled substance, 7th. Lein was stopped at 1:12 a.m., Saturday, on West Main Street, Batavia, by Deputy Joseph Corona.
Raymond W. Schramm, 27, of East Pembroke, and Marla A. Mugler, 24, of Batavia, are each charged with harassment, 2nd. Schramm and Mugler were arrested by State Police in connection with an alleged incident reported at 3:45 p.m., Dec. 9. No further details released.

A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when: (1) He possesses any firearm, electronic dart gun, electronic stun gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal knuckle knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, metal knuckles, chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type slingshot or slungshot, shirken or "Kung Fu star"; or (2) He possesses any dagger, dangerous knife, dirk, razor, stiletto, imitation pistol, or any other dangerous or deadly instrument or weapon with intent to use the same unlawfully against another;"
After all these years I'm still learning something new every day. Some things I wish I could un-learn though, would save some annoyance and agitation. This is one of them.
The impetus for that ridiculousness certainly originated in New York City with it's militarized police force. What's next? Making it illegal to pick up a stick with which to defend oneself? At this rate someday simply clenching a fist is going to be felony. Who is going to protect us from our assailants and so called protectors then? The tooth fairy?

Bob though I agree with you but, what were the circumstances that led to this discovery? Do you know if MS Bonin was defending herself or using it as a weapon? Which is plausible. Was she trained to use it? Does she know where to and not to strike? Even as a Police Officer, when I am defending myself does not give me the right to strike "deadly force" areas without proper cause. Defending yourself is not always a deadly force circumstance. Though I do agree that, one should be able to carry such an item. I think one should be trained in the proper application and use.
