Matty's Pizzeria is closed

By Howard B. Owens

Earlier this week, people told me Matty's Pizzeria was closed. I tried contacting owner Brad Fairbanks for confirmation, but could not reach him.

There is now an ad in this week's PennySaver for an auction of all Matty's equipment and fixtures at 2 p.m., March 31.

If you purchased a Matty's gift card in The Batavian's Deal of the Day on Feb. 18 or later, we will refund your money. You must return the unused gift card to us. Our address is 200 E. Main St., #5, Batavia, NY 14020. Refunds will be issued through PayPal.

I used a card there on Monday - actually they were out of several of the toppings I asked for - but it was one of the best pizzas I've had in Batavia. Sorry to hear they closed.

As a guy who has a vested interest, to say the least, in the continuing success of local, independent restaurants, I have to say: This is depressing.

Closings in the area over the last 24 months:

Belladessa's/Jackson Street Grill
Margarita's
The Doghouse (Akron)
Flippin' Burgers (Holley)
South Beach (Incarnation #1) subsequently re-opened under new ownership..
Mother's
The Family Spot (Lyndonville)
Kingdon Family Market (Pavilion)
Grugnale's (Later re-opened as Kravings at a different Location)
Creekside Grocery (Carlton)
Club 469 (Albion)
Pontillo's x 2
Sallome's

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but that's just about one every other month over the course of two years.

Isn't the owner of Matty's opening the new midscale burger place downtown? Maybe he's liquidating a current non-performing business to invest in his new venture - no inside scoop, just an idea. Good luck to anyone opening a restaurant right now, the stars are temporarily aligned against you.

It is sad. Matty's was my favorite, and the only one that could actually make a good pie for this Jersey Boy. Looks like my pizza intake just dropped.

Chris, there was also House of K and Main St Coffee to throw out some more.

I was going for service-industry businesses, Phil, but you're right. There's a whole other list of retailers.

That makes no sense, everytime i went in there, they were packed. Some of the other places that went out of business made sense. This one is a headscratcher...

Yeah,I noticed this on Thursday-when I looked on William Kent's auction site,he had this listed as a short notice auction-and you have short notice to get the equipment out also-by 5pm the next day.I wonder if health dept had anything to do with closure-the auction ad says that that the fridges and freezers either don't work or need work? I just used the Matty's card I bought on the daily deal a few weeks ago- my son loved their chicken finger subs-guess he'll have to find another place. They had good food at a fair price.

Rumor I've heard is something related to the landlord.

Also, one of the former partners, Derek, is a partner in a new venture on Jackson St., Bourbon & Burger Co. ... hopefully open in a few more weeks.

Also, Kenny opened The Daily Grind, now Espresso Salads and Subs.

There's a new restaurant that's opened in Le Roy, and a new Cafe. There's a new bakery on West Saile Drive and Scratch Bakery in Le Roy is fairly recent as well as the bakery in Stafford. There's a new small grocery store planned for Darien (though, Chris, there is a restaurant out there that closed that's not on your list). Also in Darien Center, fairly new is Minty Wellness, which we profiled a few weeks back. I know of a couple of other businesses planning/hoping to open restaurants.

Businesses open and businesses close, and the food business has always been volatile. As we've seen, food businesses often close for reasons that have little to do with their ability to remain profitable.

Thankfully, there are people who come along and want to give it a try and replace the ones that go.

But it is important to remember, the local business owners need your support.

i think its funny people say matty's was the best pizza in town considering her STOLE the sauce receipt from Jerry Arena so in so facto wouldt arenas be but as good?

I was never impressed with Matty's let alone Arenas. When the car show was at Matty's, a few times after the show a couple of us would go to Ficrella's for pizza.

You can't beat Main Street Pizza Company's pizza.

I find it interesting that the last few comments liked both matty's and main street. Because both the original owner of matty's and the owner of main street both got their start at Arena's and had unlimited access to both the recipes and procedures on how to be successful in the pizza business. Arena's in the last 34 years has done alot for the town in the form of employment and taxes raised.

Wether you like Arena's, Pontillos, Ficarella's and all the rest it truly is sad to see any part of Batavia's history close because of hardship.

Judging by the price of pizza lately, one would have to get a second mortgage to feed a family. I realize the price of the ingredients have sky rocketed in the last few years, but this once staple food source has been priced out of the range of alot of young families.

The Bakery on West Saile Dr is a startup of one of the local lunchtruck/hotruck. I am pretty sure they have eat in dining as well. Breakfast & lunch as well as alot of baked goods, I ve had a few cookies cakes and pies from there.....damn good :)

If you like kid pizza ,Mattys was the best but it wasn't comparable to brick oven pizza. The place was really dirty and he was like four months back on rent with many of his suppliies coming from Tops .Once you get behind with vendors ,your buisiness goes down hill.Samething has happened with every closed pizza shop.

If anyone happens to be in the Geneseo area, check out Giovanna's Pizza and Pasta, located in the Wegman Plaza. It is owned and operated by John Pontillo and it is the real deal.

Mobile food vendors are very hot in Austin these days. Many a fancy restaurant chef has a side business selling their creations from trailers. One of the best pizza shops in Austin was a trailer parked next to a bar that didn't serve food. All you had to do was order and go about your business, the pizza would find you. They moved to a parking lot downtown much to my dismay. I don't know what the laws are in Batavia, but it sure cuts down on the overhead.

Yeah Tommy, I suffered through many a Chucky Cheese in my childrearing days. Gattitown also had a million video games and terrible pizza that the young un's scarfed like candy. Little Caesar's tortured me as well. I ate it while dreaming of the real deal, like all good soldiers do. We pay our dues.

The cafe in Le Roy, is Cafe Le Roy on Main Street next to the hardware store. It is open late afternoons and evenings. He has coffee, very delicious cocoa, tea, and some pastries.

Java's on Main (across the street and east a little) is open mornings and afternoons. They serve coffee, tea, cocoa, espresso, pastries, egg sandwiches, and a variety of lunch items. I highly recommend the veggie panini on rye with provolone and a spiced chai latte!

Scratch Bakery is a separate business in the same store front as Java's. This is a made to order bakery with the best cake I've ever had in my life. Even as a child I preferred pie, brownies, and cookies over cake and have never been a fan of frosting. Mary Margaret's cakes and frosting are wonderful and her scones...Oh my!

The new restaurant is Kati's Place, a diner where Tyler's used to be between Shelby's and the Eagle. Everything my family has tried so far has been fabulous and it's kid friendly too!

While you're here check out Vintage and Vogue & The Hobby Horse too! Of course we have many fabulous businesses and restaurants, but since we were talking about main street...

I agree with JoAnne. Giovanna's Pizza and Pasta in Geneseo is excellent. John Pontillo has done a great job bringing back the great taste that I remember growing up in Batavia.

Jennifer, thank you for recommending the Veggie Panini sounds yummy!! I will be in Leroy tomorrow and now my plans include stopping at Java's and Scratch Bakery. Nothing like trying new types of food and for some strange reason my taste buds seem to agree with my desire to make them happy, unfortunately the waist-line does not always think that some of my choices are the best? So I'm sure the Veggie meal will make all happy.

I've been told at least twice that "Giovanni's" is coming to LeRoy and taking over the "Pontillo's" space. Don't get your hopes up too much for any treats from "Scratch Bakery". Her business model isn't based on walk-in traffic.

While it's currently true that Mary Margaret is not at Scratch Bakery every day, that is because when her business model was based on walk-in and orders she wasn't get enough walk-in to keep it up. She had to take a part time job and go to orders in order to stay in business at all. Perhaps if more people are willing to give her walk-in business she can go back to that model. I definitely recommend ordering and checking out her website: http://www.scratchbakery.biz/ for more information because her baked goods are in one word ... Phenomenal! And you can find her every Saturday at the Le Roy Farmers' Market during market season.

Kevin, I bet if you called Mary Margaret with an order that you'd be thrilled with her delivery service. Pretty tough criticism for a local business don't you think?
Her baked goods are perfection. It's worth the time to call in an order, or order on line.

Jennifer is correct...I am not there every day, but I will be tomorrow. I look forward to meeting you Mr. Thompson if you decide to visit us while you are in LeRoy. ;)

No, it's an absolutely fair assessment. Bernie is not going to walk into Java's on any given morning this week and find a display case full of baked goods.

I get coffee fairly regularly during the morning commute hours at Java's. On at least three separate occasions I have seen/heard people walk in with the expressed purpose of taking baked goods to work with them only to be told there were none available but they could take a card and order them for "next time". For her sake, I hope she'll be given that chance but considering she now has two competitors within 15 minutes to the West where people can buy on site, well, we'll see. I've already been to "Michelle's" and other than trips "Ohlson's" or "Phillips European", she's got all my baked goods business from now on.

I'm a loyal customer of Mary Marg's. I started ordering a couple years ago. I like the "special order" personal touch, myself. I am always assured a fresh delicious product. And she delivers.

I just ordered two dozen brownie bites to share with the people I work with at my weekend job. They are absolutely delicious with a dark chocolate frosting that's to die for.

Her special order cakes are works of art, too.

When her "Farmers Market" business starts up there will be an abundance of pies, cookies and breads every Saturday morning at the LeRoy Farmer's Market and at Crink's Farm Market.

It seems to me that the bottom line of both the article and the comments is that we can't take our local businesses for granted. If we want them to stay then we have to frequent them. If we don't frequent them then they can't stay open for business.

Thank you to everyone who is willing to try and make a go of it in this hostile climate.

You nailed it in that comment, Jennifer. It is very hard to own and operate a small business. Practicing a local philosophy might not be as easy as running into a one stop big box, but the rewards to a community are plenty with precious dollars circulating among the people living and paying taxes right here.

Thanks Lorie. I had been planning on bringing a cookie tray from Wegmans to the Garrison Starr event on Thursday. Just called Mary Margaret and she's making me a tray that will undoubtedly be much better for less money!

I planned on making crab puffs for Garrison Starr's performance on Thursday night, but because of time constraints I'll be making a crab spread instead. The platter from Mary will be a big hit. If I didn't already have the fixings for the platter I'm making, I would have done the same thing.
She and I talked today and I just got an email from her about orders I'll be giving her in April and then later in May.
I'm having a luncheon meeting the first week in April. It will be soup served in Mary's bread bowls and salad.
The best thing about ordering from Mary is the personal touch. I can tell her what I'm hoping to achieve and she comes up with the wonderful ideas that make it happen.
Oh, and did I mention an upcoming breakfast, again in May, with french toast made with Mary's bread and topped with a strawberry rhubarb sauce?
The bread bowls and the hand cut to order bread may not be a daily find on any bakery shelf, but on Mary's virtual shelves, I know they'll be there.
As an aside. This is for Dan, who recognized the inspiration for crab puffs. Thanks, in advance for the BLACK coffee and donuts tomorrow, Dan.

I just bopped into Main Street to buy a soda and wound up talking with Vic briefly.

Regarding the claim above that he got his recipes from Jerry's he said his recipe is his own and tastes nothing like Jerry's. "Mine is sweet," Vic said. He said he also uses a different pizza crust recipe.

Kevin,
Let's have some transparency here.
Are you associated in any way with Michele's other than just a customer?
If you are associated with Michele's bakery, why would you be going to Java's to get baked goods?
Mary Margaret is a friend and a supplier of baked goods for our little shop. I appreciate her dedication and quality of her goods.
I've no doubt that Michele also has a quality product and a good base of steady customers. That is wonderful.
I just can't imagine why you would attack Mary Margaret with such fervor without a motive.
