'Operation Safe-Stop' nets seven alleged speeding violations

By Howard B. Owens

Seven drivers in the City of Batavia received tickets today for allegedly speeding in school zones as part of an increased enforcement effort aimed at improving safety for schoolchildren called "Operation Safe-Stop."

The extra enforcement was funded through a grant from the governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

The primary target was drivers who fail to stop for school buses that are dropping off or picking up children, but no such violations were observed today, according ot the Batavia PD.

Officers will continue unannounced enforcement efforts throughout remainder of the school year.

No law enforcement effort like this is a wasted effort. Seven citations for speeding in a school zone during school hours is seven potential tradgedies averted.

I would much rather have state dollars spent on operations like this that researching flavored tobacco laws (It does cost money to pass a bill)

In a perfect world, would like to send less money to the state so that we could afford to do operations such as this more often on our own.

Mark i do agree that they caught 7 people speeding in a school zone..What i don't understand is why isn't that just part of normal day to day police operations in the city of Batavia..Isn't that their job ,Why do they need special grant money from the state to do what we allready are paying them to do....Shouldn't they allready be wacthing out for people speeding in the school zone....Seems like they always need special grant money to patrol and enforce the rules of the road..One day its for cell and texting while driving ..A couple of weeks ago it was for DWI road blocks..Isn't this what they are spose to be doing anyways....Or is this just about writing tickets and making the State money..

Mark,
Right now you have about 3 patrol cars on duty at a time. That's not a lot to cover all the streets that have school buses on them and to cover the 5 schools (soon to be 4) that have to be covered. And then there are the normal calls in the morning, like fender benders.

If they want extra coverage, they need extra help. We can not afford this on a regular basis unless you are willing to hire additional full time help, which nobody seems to be willing to do.
