Pembroke students skip gift exchange, raise money for charity

By Howard B. Owens

Children in the Pembroke Primary classes have been raising money for Wings Flights for Hope this month rather than exchanging Christmas gifts. So far, they've raised more than $200. The classes raising money are taught by Mrs. Altmann and Mrs. Parada. Mrs. Altmann, a volunteer firefighter in Williamsville, has promised to match what the amount the kids raise by Dec. 23.

KUDOS to Pembroke for teaching kids that the Holidays aren't just about what you get......Holidays are about GIVING :)

PS Howard: For some reason The Batavian" is having trouble loading on AOL's browser. It keeps trying to download sonething to my computer, the AOL jumps in and I'm getting a bunch of error messages. This isn't the first time it has happened.

I am running Windows 7 and AOL 9.5

The AOL browser can be buggy.

In the next year, we'll be making changes to the code of the home page, which should help such situation, but it will be a couple of months, at least, before we even get started.

Every AOL upgrade has been for advertiser benefit at the expense of speed. Watching a page load (or not) as minutes tick away and glaring at the "Top Speed" label... Take Chris' advice and download Mozilla Firefox 3.6.

I have been using Safari for PC for over a year now on my laptop, works great. I like it a lot. I use Google Chrome on the family desktop. Works great too.

A while back, my computer guy changed the name of my Internet Explorer icon to 'Use Firefox Instead.' I got a chuckle out of that.

I haven't used Chrome much and my only experience with Safari is from my seldom used iPhone. My opinion: Just about anything is better than IE or AOL.
