Photo: Group partying at Dewitt pavilion dumps garbage in the park

By Howard B. Owens

A reader told us how this pile of trash wound up in Dewitt Recreation Area. He and his wife went to the park Saturday evening and police were talking to two gentleman by a truck near the playground. After talking with police, the men went to a party in the Pavilion. As the party broke up, one man with the group gathered all the garbage, walked over to the woods and dropped what you see above. So here's a request of whomever dumped this: Go clean it up. Don't litter our parks.

Look around this is everywhere these days I walk up and down my street with a bucket two times a week picking up garbage. There is no respect for the environment let alone a park. One thing I can say about the looser dirtbags that do this is for the most part there sneaky because Im always looking for them who do it. These people who seen it should have said something.
Lets face it this is only the beginning your going to see trash all over batavia soon. And shame on the parks also for not supplying trash cans in parks.

What happened to the ordinances on the books about public littering. Why are they not being enforced in cases like this?

"And shame on the parks also for not supplying trash cans in parks."

It boils down to a $20 an hour employee spending his or her time emptying trash bins and the cost of the bin's repair and replacement. We all want our taxes kept down and this is one place where we can see the trade off.

Correct you are Scott Williams. Short sighted government will soon learn why a public trash collection system is a valuable public safety asset for a community. As you note... this is only the beginning.

So the county, therefore YOU as the taxpayer, should pay to have more cops to enforce "no littering" laws and hire additional park staff to collect the trash from people who could have taken the 4 nanoseconds it takes to remember to bring their own trash bag and actually place it in the trunk of their car when they leave?

Scott and Kyle, why should I pay higher taxes for trash cans for degenerates like these. What would it have taken for them to carry their own trash out.

What's the most shameful is the garbage indicates that they had children with them. They're the beginning of a whole new generation of litterers to contend with.

Most State Parks have carry in and carry out policy. I have been told that there is no budget for trash bin, trash bags or trash collecting. Look at Genesee County Park they also have no waste bins. My Fiancee and I were walking my dog there one day and a pickup truck roared out of the park and lost a bag of trash that scatter all over the road. We tried to stop them but, they kept going so, I turned in the plate number to park authorities and gave my information to contact me. Never heard back if they pursued the issue. People are lazy and even if, trash bins were available some people would still litter because, it is an inconvenience for them to walk over and throw trash away. Another issue at Genesee County Park is people walking their dogs and refusing to pick up their dog's desposit and leaving it on the roadside, the road and the yard where people play and walk.

Some people do not have respect for anything or anyone. There is no full proof way of stopping littering. The best thing anyone can do is ask the individual to pick it up or report those individuals to park authorities. Even that is an issue because, people do not want confrontation with the idiots who litter and unless the park is willing to pursue those who litter and if they do, it cost money which they do not have. Fortunately, I have seen some people who just pick it up and disposed of it themselves.

I flatly refuse to believe that because there are some rude, ignorant people in this world, that all people are that way. To try and say that Batavia will turn into a dumping ground June 2nd, because we won't have a public contract is basically saying that you think your neighbors are dirty irresponsible degenerates.

I'm sorry, I have a little more faith in people.

That said, will there be a minority who will do things like this? Yes, and that is a shame, but I will not prosecute all for the act of a few.

Such an overreaction.

This kills me. I just can't understand the thought process in leaving this trash and just throwing trash out the window of your vehicle. Just go next to McDonalds at the bigger parking lot and see people who think nothing of throwing a whole bag of their trash out the window then leaving. I guess this is my biggest pet peeve!

For those of us who walk around Batavia and drive around the county, WNY, and the US we have seen trash both small and large scale in our neighborhoods and countryside for most of our lives. Bags of trash, meal bags, bottles & cans (with and without deposits), cigarette butts, food wrappers, receipts, etc... You will find litter within a mile's walk anywhere in the city and along any of the major routes in the county. The ignorance of some people has persisted for decades in this country. That does not mean we should accept it, but it is a symptom of our American culture. We're a big country and that enables a mindset that one wrapper tossed aside doesn't matter, one can out the window won't hurt a thing, one bag of trash in the woods won't be seen... We also are susceptible to a belief system that someone else will take care of everything - it's the American way! Why take responsibility when someone else will do the work to make it all better?

I'd love a much cleaner America and at least a much cleaner Batavia and Genesee County. We won't get there without people taking personal responsibility for their own actions. We won't get there without a culture that encourages personal accountability. We won't get there without people growing up learning and believing that their actions have consequences and them actually caring about the results of their actions.

Maybe Singapore is unique in being a city/country island, but the millions of people who live there get it - they keep it clean which makes it more enjoyable for everyone who lives there and more welcoming for visitors. They get it! I've been there - it's not a myth: Singapore is the cleanest most densely populated place on the planet. We can learn from them.

Interesting Phil, you feel people are overreacting to those who litter our parks, playgrounds, etc.... Is your faith in people or do you prefer to turn a blind eye towards the litter issue?

I agree that most people are respectful but, society is changing and not for the better. We do not make people accountable for their actions. We make up excuses or turn a blind eye to avoid confrontation.

I am not sure who you feel believes that, basically their neighbors are dirty irresponsible degenerates? People do not normally dirty their own property or home but, does not mean they do not litter at other places.

Think about this "What If". Someone can be a neat freak and go to a park and have a party. Then they realize it is a carry in and out for trash. They "MAY" decide to leave their trash behind rather than put it in their nice clean vehicle. I am not saying that happens with everyone but, it still can happen. Sort of like when people get a rental car, their are thoses who beat on it because, it is not theirs so, why worry?

I do not think anyone is overreacting above. They just take pride in their parks and are frustrated by those who basically do not care!
