Photo: New Mexican food place planned for Batavia

By Howard B. Owens

It looks like Batavia is going to get a taco stand on Ellicott Street across from the Pok-A-Dot near Liberty Street. This sign appeared in the window recently. The new owners were not around when I stopped by this morning.

UPDATE: One of the new owners is Derek Geib, co-owner of Bourbon & Burger Co.. Mike Hyland, a partner at B&B, is also partner with Casa Del Taco, along with Dick Long. They're shooting for an Oct. 1 opening.

Please, please let this be a place that sells Tijuana-style, real taco-stand Mexican street food. With shredded beef tacos and burritos on the menu, with the latter not stuffed with rice and beans unless you specify that.

A place with a little condiment bar with sliced radishes, lemon wedges, various hot sauces, not just habanero sauce in a bottle, and salsa. A place with authentic Mexican old-style music playing.

A place......

Pretty please with dulce on top?

Tried them all back here east of the Mississippi, some good, some just ok. I will stick with The Taco Place's fare, always the same "GREAT"!
Joe just knows how to satisfy and for many years.
Thanks
I wish the new shop good luck and hope like others that they bring a new edge to their offerings.

We here in Beautiful Batavia can have all the want to be Mexican Food Places and yes I will defiantly enjoy them.
But unless you have had the opportunity to eat in Old Town San Diego you don’t know what real Mexican Food is.
I am also waiting for the new Italian Restaurant to open as well. Gosh it’s great living here in BATAVIA!!
Best of luck to Casa Del Taco, you will be just down the street so I for one will be there☺

Casa de Bandini, was excellent, but in looking up the restaurant just now, I find, sadly, so sadly, it's closed.

There's other restaurants in Old Town, but Casa de Bandini was the best, I think.

But in San Diego, any taco stand that ends in the suffix "berto" is worth checking out.

The king is Alberto's

With all due respect, any Mexican food joint "east of the Mississippi" has a high bar to reach to offer fare on the same level as stuff you can buy in, say San Ysidro or El Cajon, or Bakersfield, Calif., places I'm familiar with. The thing I've found is, without that kind of point of reference, you go with what you know.

Thus, my great anticipation for the new taco stand and the hope that it will be as good as any Alberto No. 3s, etc.

This kind of food is really Mexican fast food. It's not intended to offer "a dining experience," rather it's delicious, quickly prepared, affordable and can be eaten out of hand, for the most part.

As for Casa de Bandini, Howard and I had a romantic lunch date there many years ago. The authentic Old California ranchero atmosphere in Old Town San Diego was sublime and spending a sun-drenched afternoon on the patio sipping margaritas and eating enchiladas is a nice, warm memory.

The only reason I can think for its demise is mismanagement. The location, fare, atmosphere were unparalleled.

But Casa de Bandini was a restaurant in the best sense of the word. A taqueria is not the same thing, nor should it be expected to be. I love both. But the one planned for Ellicott Street is more likely to be a taco stand and that is outstanding! Bring it on!

Billie & Howard I so agree with the both of you.
Oh and Billie, Sipping Margaritas even with a basket of Nacho's to me is like being in another world.
Heck I will be honest, eating a peanut butter sandwich is better if one has a real Margarita in hand☺

Yeah, but you can't get a decent hot dog south or west of Pittsburgh. Or a decent sub and don't get me going about what Californians think passes for a pizza pie.

Hey Dave you want a real good Dog one day you should go to Fenway Park and get a Fenway Frank. One of the best there is or every will be☺ My Opinion Only. Having lived in Vermont and for many years and made the 90 mile trip to Boston more times than I can count the cry was always "Yes'm It's ESSEM"
Oh and we have some pretty good Subs right here in Batavia!
Thank you Southside Deli☺

Southside Deli subs are my favorite too. Bernie. If ever I am in Mass. I will try an ESSEM. My daughter, son in law and most importantly my grandson now live in southern NH, about 45 minutes from Boston. So we do go to visit now and again. I'm usually lookin' for lobster when I'm there.

I was just pokin you Howard and Billie, I hope it has tacos like you're talking about too, sounds good, I've rarely met a taco I didn't like. Is that the same building that had a sub shop coming soon sign in it?

These comments are one reason why I like Anthony Bourdain's programs on the Food Network. He goes to the source and tries the rough-and-real "cuisine" in whatever place he travels. I, too, would love to try a real Chicago dog and a NYC corned beef sandwich, etc. I've never had a po'boy in Louisiana or been to a beachside clambake like I read about in Yankee magazine. Some day! And I adore Gyros with LAMB. Hello...

Well, Dodger fans will tell you nothing beats a Dodger Dog. Not being a Dodger fan (being, in fact, a Dodger hater), I won't go that far. I do prefer my dogs boiled or steamed rather than grilled and grilling seems to be the only option around here.

Some of the best Mexican food I've had was actually when I was in Detroit. A place near the river called Armando's. Great enchiladas and tacos. The slow roasted pork burritos are out of this world.

The coney dogs in Detroit are great! Similar to the Texas Hot dogs in Wellsville.

I like my skinned red and white hots steamed too. When I worked in Syrcause in a sports bar just off campus I came up w a new type of steamer. Any feeling brave enough to try it is welcome to. Its always sold out in our bar when SU was playing and came close on most other nights as well.

Tried several different brands but replace the water when boiling your hots with Killians Irish Red, use a fork to poke holes on both sides and do a slower boil.

They were delicious and went good with any style hot dog... even sauerkraut.

Nothing like the California Mexican cuisine! And once you have had it, nothing compares. The Po Boys in New Orleans are my next favorite thing. Now I am hungry!

I learned a thing or two being married to a Texan girl. New York has great Italian Restaurants but, average Mexican Restaurants. Texas has great Mexican Restaurants and average Italian Restaurants. Something’s are just better in certain regions. While based in Great Falls, Montana, I was impressed by the New York Style Pizzeria owned by two Brooklyn natives. They broke down the chemicals and minerals in the water of New York City Water Authority. They added chemicals and minerals not found in the water of Great Falls, Montana, to give their pizza an authentic New York Pizza taste. They were always packed. What I wish Batavia had, was a great Thai Restaurant. I have to travel to Penfield to Pattaya's to get some great Thai food (Ask for Thai Hot). Batavia needs some more diversity in their restaurant businesses.
