Photo: No mail delivery on Columbus Day

By Howard B. Owens

It's Columbus Day, and as the line of mail trucks parked behind the Post Office on Main Street shows, there is no mail delivery today.

I, for one, was clueless about Monday being Columbus Day and checked my mailbox twice. Columbus Day is one of those low-key holidays only truly appreciated by government workers who get time off.

And Monday, coincidentally, was a slow news day. Fortunately, we have astute readers who call us to task for pointing out the obvious, thereby keeping us on our toes lest we give short shrift to something they deem more worthy.

Good and gentle readers, we will continue to post things about everyday life that, come to think of it, happen every year: a New Year's Day baby, St. Paddy's merriment, back-to-school stuff, Halloween pumpkins, people entering raffles, workers working on roadways, and more.

This is not in done in lieu of anything newsier, rest assured.

P.S. anonymous news tips are always welcome.
