Photo: Rime ice on tree on Tracy Avenue

By Howard B. Owens

Dave Twichell shared this photo he took this morning of the spiky ice on a tree on Tracy Avenue, Batavia.

The formation is known as "rime ice," which is formed by the rapid freezing of cold water droplets of fog onto a cold surface.

I've also heard this go by the name of "Hoar Frost" as well. Regardless, how it forms is a very interesting process, as special conditions are needed, and it is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
