Road construction causing long delays on Oak Street, Batavia

By Howard B. Owens

If you're heading north, be aware that Oak Street heading north has been mired in traffic jams all day.

Road reconstruction at Oak and Park seems to be the cause for the delays.

Currently, traffic is piled up from Park all the way to Richmond and at times even to Main Street.

UPDATE 4:45 p.m.: Southbound Route 98 is being shut down at West Saile Drive because of traffic congestion.

UPDATE 5:17 p.m.: Howard spoke with the construction supervisor on duty who said the work is supposed to be done at nighttime, but the temperature must be 50 degrees or higher. With colder nights lately, they had to do the work during the day to keep the project schedule on track.

I left work in Elba at 4:00 and didn't even see the Tops parking lot until 5:00. Might have been better traffic flow if they would have allowed more than three vehicles to go through at a time on 98 either way. I understand you have to keep the interstate from blocking up, but you would think 98 traffic would get more preference than those coming off Park rd, they they allowed to flow through until there were no more cars waiting. I will be taking Bank from now on until this is done and bypass Batavia completely.

News flash to this moron it gets cold at night in October where in the hell is the highway superintendent! This has disturbed business in many communities and someone ought to be held accountable for it. This should be shut down immediately!

For some reason, I'm into poetry lately......odd. But this is what I thought of when I read the comments above

Be still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

Irrelevant factoid: Howard was a literature major in college and studied poetry, even wrote some poems. He taught himself all the other stuff he knows -- truly a Renaissance Man.

that's what happens when you turn a major highway from a 4 lane into a 2 lane......they did the same with Ellicott st. (rt.63)....why don't they just turn main st. into a 2 lane and be done with it then all the major highways in this city will be a mess

That is the new strategy of the enviro Wack jobs. Bottle up traffic to promote greener transportation. That the model these city planning people are selling these days. They don't care about logic or convienance.

CJ great point..The State with little or no public input can just wave their magic wand and change a four lane to a two lane..Changing the traffic flow of a city..Wonder how much gas was wasted in cars stuck idling in the above traffic tie up?...Hows the new bike lane on Ellicott working?...

I forgot all about this until I hit Elba and saw the signs. Elba's next-they have the pavement grooved through town. Funny thing is they're paving somewhere tonight also-the lights were on at Hanson's in Stafford. Northbound 98 from city to Elba is excellent-but 98 south from Batavia Elba Townline Rd to Offhaus Farms feels wavy-noticed it yesterday when they had the traffic slowed. Just wish they'd put some arrows on the light at Park and Oak.

This morning about 950am I was on my way into batavia from off saille drive. I saw an elderly lady in a cadilac rear end a silverado right at the bridge over the thruway. Traffic was already backed up. I felt bad for anyone behind them. It took me 35 minutes to get through from saille drive to tops

why not some inappropriate poetry as well?

When I was on Shore Patrol long long ago, i used to keep peace between the Marines and Sailors on the liberty boat ride back to the ship by teaching them dirty limericks and songs. Fun times. LOL
