About eight residents had to be evacuated from their homes on Lake Street this morning after a routine traffic stop by Le Roy PD led to a bomb scare.
Following the stop for alleged speeding around 7:30 a.m., a police officer conducted a search of a vehicle and found what appeared to be a homemade grenade in the trunk.
The State Police bomb disposal team was called in, Route 19 was closed, and nearby residents were evacuated.
Unspecified charges are pending against the susptect, who was taken into custody. ATF and the DA's office are being consulted.
The suspect was cooperative with police throughout the incident.
After he was stopped for allegedly speeding, the officer asked to take a look in the vehicle's trunk and the driver consented.
He reportedly told authorities he had made grenades before.
Route 19 has reopened.

What make me scratch my head is 1) Why did he consent to a search if there was a home made grenade in the trunk. 2) If he didnt remember he had one in there then where else does he have such grenades kept/stored and how many does he have?
Hmmm...when I was a kid,
Hmmm...when I was a kid, several other youths and myself used to make "grenades" from empty CO2 cartridges and reloading (green, blue or red dot) shotgun powder. Fill the cartridge about half way with powder, insert a length of green canon fuse (readily available) and wrap the tip of the cartridge with black tape. They were waterproof and were a "blast" to use in a pond. Frogs and minnows would float to the top of the pond. I still have all my fingers and we made many of those to "play" with.
I wonder if that's what constituted being called a grenade in this instance. Some people just like to mess around with such things and it doesn't necessarily mean that they're up to nefarious activities. Just trying to place a bit of possible perspective into this story. Sometimes the story is worse than the reality.
Yeah, having the thing in the back of the vehicle was dumb but I'm curious as to why he had it.
(Before law enforcement starts paying much attention to my story, my youthful excursions into explosive devices was 35 years ago. I no longer have any BB or pellet guns that use CO2 cartridges.)

Throw a can of seltzer water into a heap of hot coals and walk away.... few minutes later there is a nice bang. Did that at my graduation party. Scared the crap out of everyone. Dad looked at me disapprovingly, at least while Mom was in the room :)

My friends and I made a Surface to Surface missle once when we were kids using propane and gunpowder for a warhead and a .223 blank catridge for a detonator. It made a whopping 75' made one hell of a bang and cost my parents $150.00 in fines for the grass fire that ensued. Damn thing was we didn't get the 'A' we were expecting for our Physics project.
Thank God I was 16 in 1970 and not today or Howard would be publishing our exploits.

It is better than cow tipping, lol. Heck, one of my high school friends from back in the day made homemade explosives and like Doug blew up many different ponds. Heck, one device even blew apart a 4 and a half foot diameter hole in 19" of ice. I still remember him lighting the fuse and running on the ice. It was extremely comical at the time. Fortunately no one was injury but, he did bump his pride several times as he tried to keep his balance to get out of the area of effect. When he graduated from high school he joined the military and became a E.O.D. member and doing what he did best. Now you cannot take a dump without someone worrying about a dirty bomb.

John, I thought I heard in the initial report that, he had ammo laying around in his vehicle. So, I am not positive but, if that was the case, he probably was conducting a search for officer's safety. Since the owner gave the officer consent there is no issue. Hopefully people do not blow this incident out of portion. It is hunting season. Maybe he is like Crocodile Dundee where he sets off explosives for fishing? BTW, how are things going?

LOL Mark I remember one WD40 bomb made a fireball so big my friends lil brother thought it was a nuclear explosion (classic mushroom cloud) No one was hurt, but that was how we found out that crayfish which hibernate under rocks by the hundreds when the canal drains. Turn as red as freshly boiled lobsters. Yep them thar rocks get mighty hot... LOL
