Suspect in Red Bull theft from Le Roy Tops turns self in at request of relative

By Howard B. Owens

A 22-year-old Le Roy resident is charged with petit larceny for allegedly trying to steal a shopping cart full of Red Bull from Top's Friendly Markets in Le Roy on Thursday.

(Name redacted upon request), who has no permanent address, was reportedly contacted by an out-of-state relative who read The Batavian's real-time news report on the alleged theft and suspected his involvement.

She contacted police with the tip and then was able to contact xxx and convinced him to turn himself in.

xxx walked to the Le Roy PD office in the village shortly before midnight Thursday.

The case began when police received a report that around 1:40 p.m. an unknown white male wearing a white tank top-loaded a shopping cart full of Red Bull and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

The subject allegedly went behind Dollar General and an employee there reported seeing him with the shopping cart of Red Bull.

After abandoning the shopping cart, the subject fled and police attempted to locate the suspect.

The Sheriff's K-9 unit assisted in the search, but the effort was unsuccessful.

As the search was taking place, The Batavian posted details of the unfolding events as broadcast by local law enforcement.

A relative in another state read The Batavian later that evening and began to suspect she knew who was involved and started making phone calls.

xxx was jailed on $500 bail.

Amazing that the news Howard reports has now turn to readers not just commenting and posting but them researching or looking up the peoples facebook comments in each report. Really? Everybody wants to be a reporter. Controversy sells, right? Let just add to it. That is as bad as the crimes these people are committing.

It's as bad to post PUBLIC facebook comments off the criminals page as it is to steal? Seriously? If these people don't want anyone to see their comments/picture son facebook, it's up to them to turn it to PRIVATE. There is nothing wrong being done here.

Try being part of a solution to this issue instead of adding controversy. You are correct they do need to face up to the consequences to their actions.

Yep Lucie and posting facebook pages that show the cockyness and attitude of these criminals takes them from just being names in the paper to real life. You know how people become criminal like this, apathy and anonimity. They move around among us looking for opportunity. Being part of the solution in my mind is people being made aware, and looking these predators in the eye pointing at them and telling each other to watch out for them. Then they are on the defensive and have other things to worry about rather than did sos and so leave a purse in a car or is so and so home or not so I can go grab something from their house?

If thats not being part of the solution then pray tell what do we do to become part of the solution? Stop criticizing how people deal with somethin if you arent gonna provide an alternate way to deal with it. Otherwise your kind of stealing from people their ability to vent or their right to speak, just because it is disagreeable to you personally.
