Today's Poll: Can Afghanistan become a stable democracy?

By Howard B. Owens
Ed Gentner

To think Afghanistan can become a democracy is a fantasy, to think it could at some point become a stable democracy is delusional. A better questiion is can, America return to being a stable functioning democracy that serves its own people?

It is time that all of the NATO forces be removed, Bin Laden is dead, Al Queda decimated. Stop putting our troops put into harms way for no good reason.

Recent audits show that 30-65% of the money given to contractors for various projects have been lost to waste, fraud, outright theft by the contractors and locals alike, meanwhile our roads, bridges, schools, and infra-structure is crumbling.

To add insult to injury the half-wits in Congress who control the purse strings in Congress led by Republican Eric Kantor are demanding that funding for disater aid be offset by matching cuts other than from the military or the Afghan quagmire.

CAN Afghanistan become a stable democracy? Sure, but only if the people have the will to do so. Is it likely or probable that Afghanistan will become a stable democracy? Let's just say that I'm not putting any money on it.

Ed, you stole my thunder.

The most stable and powerful republic in the history of this planet is now at risk of failure and demise. Even if the Afghans truly wanted democracy, where is their model?

Is the political philosophy of a nation, led by a vision such as that of our founding fathers, viable long term? Absolutely.

But not when it's leadership is allowed to run amok by a sleeping populace. This has been happening for not just the last 3 years, but more like 30.

We will certainly never really know until we get out of their country so they can get to work on that themselves. It'll never happen while we or any other country is meddling.
