Today's Poll: Do you ever throw trash out the window of your car?

By Howard B. Owens
Dave Olsen

I've had this discussion with others, I'm interested in hearing some opinions. I usually throw apple cores and banana peels out the window. Never on someone's yard, always in the weeds on the side of the road, so some critter doesn't go into the road to get it. Since apple cores and banana peels are bio-degradable, is it littering? I don't toss anything else out the window.

As much as i hate to admit it when a big government program works, I am admitting that the deposit law in NY on cans, bottles and plastic water bottles is working. I rarely see any of those on the roadside in NY. I travel PA quite a bit and beer & soda cans are all along the roadside.

Throwing trash out the window reflects upon the individual's basic personality and his or her views of life and the World they live in. If they care so little about the environment what else in life do they harbor the same mentality?

Howard, I have driven the same route to work for 25 years and on many occasions ate an apple on my way home, discarding the core in roughly the same area. I am hoping that I may have started a grove.

NO!

Also, When i find out who throws the full bag of McDonalds garbage on the side of our road on a daily basis, Im going to do everything in my power to make sure the penalty you pay is humiliating. Your probably already near death from eating that shit everyday anyway,

Several thoughts about this:

1. 15% say they throw trash out the window? Tell us where you live and we'll bring our trash to your lawn since you don't seem to care.

2. There may be a lot less bottles and cans along the road, but there are still a lot. I pick them up while riding my bike and I always fill my bag. I often suspect the reason is people drinking beer while driving and getting rid of the evidence (on my lawn of course).

3. Walk along a road shoulder anywhere and look at the millions of cigarette butts. For me this alone is reason to ban them. A lot of people seem to think this is harmless. Don't you wonder where all the crud left in the filter ends up?

Nothing irritates me more than people who toss trash out their car windows. Just randomly drop their trash as they walk around. I always find McDonald's and Burger KIng bags and cups all over my front lawn. I was also traveling on the thruway one day when an idiot deposited a bag o crap out the windows and it splattered all over my windshield. I waited until the trash cleared and I could see again they drove next to the driver rolled down my window and told him what I thought of his behavior. he he.

like some of you, I am guilty of the banana peel tossing. my floor boards in both front and back are a testament that I do not litter. this a habit my children have picked up as anytime I have gotten a ride from them, I do have to push their floorboard trash out of the way or simply put my feet upon it....litterbugs suck....

tell me whose idea was it to take the ashtray out of cars anyways? I mean even for a non smoker an ashtray is perfect for loose change.. must have been the government

Just want to thank all of the respondents that throw their apples and banana peels out on the roadside. Makes a great draw for the deer. BTW, I think you owe me a couple of vehicles - No need to buy me a new car. "Used" ones will do fine.

A couple weeks ago there were comments here about a guying being cited for tossing a cigarette butt on the ground. Several people thought it was ridiculous. I think not.

Last year on vacation in Alaska we (my wife and I) were in Ketchikan and stopped to chat with a local who was feeding bread to birds. Except he wasn't tossing the bread on the ground for the birds to pick up, they were eating out of his hands. After our commenting about that, he explained in Ketchikan they have a strongly enforced littering ordinance and merely being seen by authorities tossing bread on the ground despite it being immediately eaten by the wildlife is grounds enough to be cited for littering wich carries a stiff fine. Same with tossing cigarette butts and whatnot on the ground.

During the rest of our stay there I made it a point to look around to see how clean the town was, and it was indeed spotless.

I'd love to see such aggressive litter control in Batavia to brighten the place up but realistically that's wishful thinking that will never materialize. Heck, it took the City of Batavia nearly TWO YEARS to enforce existing City Code to get some neighbors who frequently let their trash get scattered all over the neighborhood by the wind to stop. Feh.

Christopher, I could not agree more. For years, someone has been tossing fast food trash out the window on Colby Road. This occures nearly every day too. I swear, if I ever find out who is doing this, I'm going to go to all the fast food places around, collect a big bag of trash from each of them and throw the trash all over his or her yard.

HMMMMMMM> I wonder if the police can get finger prints off the bags. If any of these jokers have been arrested, They can spend some time cleaning up the roadsides

Janice and Christopher, here is a suggestion. When I lived in Ithaca there was someone who would throw a bag of wendys trash behind a hedge on one of the properties I took care of. After about a month I started to collect them and sure enough soon there were reciepts left on or in the bag. I collected them and when friend of mine that was on the local police force saw them. He told me that can be traced, the transaction number and store number are all you need. But our wendys put a name and last 4 digits of card paid with too. If they always pay cash your outta luck. But you might try that then enter a complaint. Ithaca police charged the guy doing the dumping a single charge for each date they found with the trash it was a 55 gallon bag and they stopped counting @ about 50 violations.

I have to admit the several thousands of dollar fine and some weekend jail time made me smile a bit. As my boss there used to say sometimes the best revenge is the revenge that you don't get for yourself.

I too had always thrown apple cores and banana peels into wooded areas, but never anything else.

However; I read something that said that throwing food, especially apple cores out windows and into the road shoulder or even into the grass or woods by the road, attracts deer to the side of the road, and causes accidents of vehicles hitting deer in the road. I am not sure if this article was "fact", but I'm not going to take a chance of contributing to auto accidents and people getting hurt.

So now, I try not to throw even biodegradable food out of the car to the side of the roads.

Call it fate, Karma, comeuppance, or whatever, but I admitted to frequent apple core tossing and I have hit 8 deer. Eat apples, toss core, lose auto insurance...it happens

I too only throw apple cores and banana peels out of the window, and only in areas where another critter might eat them or where they will bio-degrade in a short period of time without being an eyesore.

Check out the curbs at any stop-light intersection. The road edges are carpeted in cigarette filters.

I am just curious about how many of the people who say, no, are smokers? I follow vehicles every day and see numerous people throw out cigarette after cigarette. I do not know any smokers who throw their cigarette butts away in their vehicle (since many vehicles do not have ash trays). Those who smoke while they drive and say they do not litter are wrong.

Bio-degradable does not mean it is not litter. McDonalds got rid of their foam containers and used paper base containers so; their containers are more bio-degradable in landfills. I agree that, tossing a banana peel, orange peel or apple core is not littering since, they all come from the earth but, it does not mean people like it thrown in their yard.

For those who think that, deer are attracted to the apple core you throw out your car window, I am going to say that is somewhat BS. I travel every night and see dozens and dozens of deer along the road. I do not see them actual munching on any apple cores but, the high green grass. Besides I am sure deer love fresh apples over apple cores. I watched the deer in my backyard actual eat apples they pull from the tree or ones they knocked down. Apple cores probably do attract scavengers such as raccoons, possums, rats, etc... Which usually run away from you even though some occassionally run the wrong way.

I use to have a couple of neighbors who liked to walk daily and I was amazed to learn that, they also pick up the trash along the route they walk. These women are not young spring chickens. Imagine what our streets would be like if, more people took that much pride in their neighborhood.

Lol @ the deer running into the road after an apple core or banana peel. Not like those dang littering fruit trees are not contributing to that. In that line of thinking all farms should be shut down because a deer or another animal might wander into to them and eat something. Come on.

And which on of you horrible litterbugs threw a banana peel in a county parking lot today. I almost slipped on it getting out of my car…then I had to deal with a deer charing after me to get it. Come on!!!

John, I take it from your comment that you're not a Gary Larsen fan. Get a grip! My comment concerning the deer coming to the roadside for apple cores was a joke. But then, I didn't expect you to get that.

As for your statement that "Those who smoke while they drive and say they do not litter are wrong.", that's only a generalization. I did use the ashtrays in my vehicles, until the ashtrays started imitating contact-lens cases. When I finally couldn't put my cigarette in the knuckle-busting, illogically-placed receptacle, I found a 6" X 6" cakepan, filled it with baking soda and stuck it in the 'cubbyhole' in the dashboard. It was easier to find in the dark, and the baking soda 'instantly' extinguished the cigarette. On top of that, the baking soda 'sucked-up' any odors from the passenger compartment - sort of like people who put an opened box of baking soda in their fridge.

It worked well in NY, but, when I moved to Florida, I found that the humidity down here would set-up the baking soda in a matter of days, to where it was rock-hard. So, I had to find a suitable replacement. After searching and searching and searching, I finally found some extremely rare substance down here to replace the baking soda - SAND.
So, now, I extinguish my cigs in the sand-filled pan, and when I have a dozen or so of them, I put them in a McDonalds or Burger King bag, along with the food wrappers, and then toss THEM into someone's yard.

It just amazes me that people actually think a deer got into the road because he was running after an apple core. Well, I live in the city on Washington Ave and one summer night I was sitting on my front porch and a deer came flying (ok…running briskly) down Lincoln Ave towards main street. You know those darn busy body does were spreading rumors of apple cores and banana peels and that deer was in hot pursuit of one. I would love to hear an animal psychologist tell me why deer run…bet it has nothing to do with garbage but I'm no Ace Ventura.

The silly season must have started early; with all this talk about apple cores and banana peels. C'mon folks, the subject is about really trash, the kind that people throw from moving cars on my front lawn on North Street here in the City of Batavia. Living one block away from a corner store has it's convenience, but we get all the trash that people elect to toss out their car windows.

WOW! And I thought I was unlucky at 4 life time car-deer auto replacements. And yes I have thrown an apple core or two over the years.

Sorry, Dave, but was never on a 'ship'. Well, not one over 16-feet in length, anyways (does that count?).

But we did have fire-watch duty at Parris Island. I've been wary of fire-watches ever since my 4th week of boot camp. Private Perkins (see, I STILL remember his name AND face) was fire-watch, and fell asleep (while smoking) on our PT gear.

I can tell you, it's no fun being woken up by two huge, screaming Drill Instructors at 2 A.M., who decided that the faults of one are the faults of all. Bends & Thrusts 'til all you could physically do was roll on the floor and moan.

Heard tell that Perkins had a blanket party shortly after that. Wouldn't know anything about that, personally!!

And, ya' know, we never did figure where he even got that cigarette. Our first visit to the PX, smokers were allowed to buy 1 carton of cigs, but they were 'held' by the DI's, who would "decide when the smoking lamp was lit".
Hell, the night of Perkins' fire, we still hadn't seen a cigarette. So, Perkins must've had some real, good hiding place.
Hey, maybe that's how the word 'butts' came about! Wow!! Only took 44 years to solve a mystery! Man can do anything, if given enough time.
