Today's Poll: What should the new veterans cemetery be named?

By Howard B. Owens

The one element that has remained a constant from day one in this endeavor has been the need for a final resting place for Western New York veterans. Even when other places like Alabama and other towns were being considered, the one phrase that popped up in every article was "Western New York". Seems like the most logical and least controversial name.

As a Vietnam veteran I oppose naming what will be my final resting place after any individual. All honorably discharged veterans did what they needed to do. Some well deserving veterans were placed in circumstances that demanded heroic action and I honor them for following though with little or no concern for their own well being.

But to name this cemetery after any individual detracts from the whole.

WNY, Pembroke, or any location related name is more appropriate.

Bob, you should take that up with Mr. Wilkinson who represents WNY Vietnam veterans. I'm sure your POV will win out against his statement in the article posted yesterday.

I suppose it doesn't really matter that much what it is named, but if they want to name it after a person, why not an enlisted member? Generals have enough stuff named after them.............
