A swamp country fable: the turkey and the possum

By JIM NIGRO

Why did the turkey cross the road? To prove to the possum that it COULD be done.

"No way!!!!" exclaimed the possum.

"Piece of cake" said the turkey...."Watch me".......and off he went.

"Cool beans" said the now believing possum. "Let me give it a try!"......

Meanwhile, a lone turkey vulture patiently watches in anticipation...........

He made it...much to the vulture's disappointment!

According to the dictionary, a fable can be a story that teaches a lesson. It can also be a legend, or a false or improbable account of something.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this story teaches a lesson. But it's pretty cute and darn funny! The pictures are a hoot, too!

Thanks for the comments.......As Billie pointed out, I had fun with this post - residual effects that can be traced back to my early years and Bullwinkle's version of Aesop and Fractured Fairy Tales. A bit of frivolity does the heart good!

Jim - have you ever been out to the Derby Hill Bird Observatory? I was just reading about the annual raptor migration that can be viewed from there, sounds pretty cool. Wondered if you had any input.

Kevin - I couldn't tell you much about Derby Hill other than its whereabouts - and thats only because I googled it after reading your comment. You've given me an idea though:a long weekend including a visit to Derby Hill, the Renaissance Festival and a day on the Salmon River. Do you still have sit-on-tops available?

p.s. thank you!

Dad-that sounded like a joke my kids tell to each other and crack up over. Hmmm...wonder where they get it???

P.S Tonight Michael asked me if we could buy Peter Cottontail so he could memorize the song to sing to you!

You may know already, Jim but I just found out the refuge staff is expecting the eaglets to begin hatching any day now.

PS - Claudia did a really nice job on the Chamber window display.
