Batavia's Connor J. Logsdon graduates from Fairfield University

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The following Fairfield University student graduated from Fairfield University in May 2020: Connor J. Logsdon, of Batavia.

At the time of graduation, a student must have earned a minimum of 120 credits and completed at least 38 three- or four-credit courses, depending on the course of study, and have an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better at the conclusion of the senior year.

Bergen's Joshua Phelps earns spot on SUNY Potsdam Spring dean's list

POTSDAM -- The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named Joshua Phelps, of Bergen, to the SUNY Potsdam dean's list.

Phelps, whose major is Arts Management, was among 295 students who were honored for academic excellence in the Spring 2020 semester.

To achieve the honor of being on the dean's list, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically graded semester hours, with a grade-point average of between 3.25 and 3.49 in the given semester.

Bergen's Bryanna D'Agostino named to Spring dean's list at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA -- Bryanna D'Agostino, of Bergen, was among 1,834 SUNY Oneonta students who earned dean's list honors for the Spring 2020 semester.

To qualify for the dean's list, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

D'Agostino is studying Psychology, at SUNY Oneonta.

SUNY Oneonta is a public, four-year college in Central New York, enrolling about 6,000 students in a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs and several graduate certificate and degree programs.

Trio of GC students earn spot on SUNY Potsdam President's List this spring

POTSDAM -- The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 1,114 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Spring 2020 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by President Kristin G. Esterberg.

The students included three from Genesee County:

  • Collin Lajoie, of Pavilion, whose major is Biology;
  • Megan Privatera, of Le Roy, whose major is Music Education;
  • Hannah Rosicka, of Le Roy, whose major is Politics.

To achieve the honor of being on the President's List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically graded semester hours, with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Batavia's Margaret Cecere named to dean's list at Kutztown University

More than 2,550 students have been named to the Spring 2020 dean's list at Kutztown University, including Margaret R. Cecere, of Batavia.

To be eligible for the dean's list, an undergraduate student must be registered for at least 12 credits and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60.

Basom's Heather Macpherson earns Silver Award for candy bar packaging in regional ad competition

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A Silver Award for packaging in the 2020 American Advertising Awards competition was won by Heather L. Macpherson, of Basom.

Her packaging for “Macabre Artisanal Chocolate Bars” earned her the distinction among graphic design students from Pennsylvania College of Technology.

The awards were presented by the Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

“Penn College had another amazing year at the NEPA American Advertising Awards,” said Nicholas L. Stephenson, instructor of graphic design. “Our students produce incredible design that balances form, function and concept; to have that work recognized by professionals is both an honor and a thrill.”

The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting more than 40,000 entries across the nation each year. The mission of the competition is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising.

Penn College graphic design students and alumni consistently earn recognition in regional, national and international design competitions.

Trio of GC students named to spring dean's list at Clarkson University in Potsdam

Three students from Genesee County have been named to the dean's list for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Hannah M Bowen, of Batavia, a senior majoring in Psychology, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Evan Hunter Dusky, of Basom, a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Jacob Perez Gangi, of Elba, a junior majoring in Civil Engineering, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Dean's list students must achieve a minimum 3.25 grade-point average and also carry at least 14 credit hours.

Five GC students named Presidential Scholars this spring at Clarkson University in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Students have been named Presidential Scholars for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Logan Cadieux, of Oakfield, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Zachary Dusky, of Basom, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Colin Graham, of Oakfield, a junior majoring in aeronautical engineering / mechanical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

John Igoe, of Oakfield, a junior majoring in aeronautical engineering / mechanical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Ben Slenker, of Alexander, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2020 semester at Clarkson University.

Presidential Scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.

Batavia's Samantha Cecere earns bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Wilkes University

Samantha Cecere, of Batavia, received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing from Wilkes University. The degree was one of 720 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees awarded at a virtual degree conferral ceremony held by Wilkes on May 16.

A second virtual degree conferral occurred on May 29 for students receiving the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy. The virtual degree conferrals, livestreamed from campus, included remarks from Wilkes University interim President Paul Adams and interim Provost Terese Wignot.

Because Wilkes University could not hold its 73rd spring commencement ceremony, an in-person graduation ceremony is planned for Sept. 12 in the McHale Athletic Center of the University Center on Main on the Wilkes campus.

Individuals completing degrees in both spring and summer will be individually recognized at the ceremony. Those receiving graduate degrees will be recognized at a 10 a.m. ceremony and those receiving undergraduate degrees will be recognized at a 3 p.m. Wilkes University is committed to honoring graduates at the September ceremony, but final plans are dependent on the guidance of national and local health officials.

Le Roy's Amy Lowe earns dean's list recognition from Bucknell University

LEWISBURG, Pa.-- Bucknell University has released the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2019-20 academic year. A student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean's list recognition.

The following student from Genesee County has achieved dean's list status: Amy Lowe, Class of 2020, from Le Roy.

Bucknell University is a highly selective private liberal arts university that offers majors in the Arts, Engineering, Humanities, Management, and Social and Natural Sciences, along with broad opportunities outside of class, to its 3,600 undergraduates.

Corfu's Samantha Paulette Salim earns degree with great distinction from Clarkson University

POTSDAM -- Samantha Paulette Salim, of Corfu, received a bachelor of science degree with great distinction in Chemistry, Psychology minor from Clarkson University this month.

Although the current government directives made Clarkson's usual May commencement celebrations in Potsdam not possible (due to coronavirus), the University's current plan is to hold on-campus commencement ceremonies on Aug. 15 with the finalization of those plans by June 30, based on current health directives.

Two Batavia seniors each get $1,000 scholarship from GC Interagency Council

The Genesee County Interagency Council awarded two $1,000 scholarships to local seniors.

The goal of the scholarship is to support students who have a strong drive to contribute to the field of Human Services. The Council was seeking applications from high school students as well as college students who were pursuing their education in a Human Services major.

Green is a Notre Dame High School senior and will be attending Niagara University in the fall to study Social Work. Her long term goal is get her Doctorate Degree in Social Work and then become a Psychiatric Social Worker where one day she hopes to have her own private practice to focus on mental health disorders. 

The Genesee County Interagency Council awarded $1,000 to Jacob Humes (photo below right).

Humes is a senior at Batavia High School and will be attending Onondaga Community College in the fall to study Psychology. His goal is to become a Child Life Specialist as the work he has done with children has shown him that there is a need for more support outside of the home for many children.

Applicants had to be in a good academic standing, majoring in Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, or Psychology. Applicants needed two letters of recommendation from a guidance counselor, teacher, or other professional person. 

They also had to describe why they were deserving of this scholarship.

The mission of the Genesee County Interagency Council is to create fellowship and understanding among community human services agencies.

The council helps to identify community issues and encourages development of resolutions. 

The Council is happy to have been able to award such deserving candidates and wishes them nothing but success for their future!

The Batavia Career and Technical Education Center National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) Chapter announced the names of 33 career and technical student inductees this month. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this induction ceremony event was canceled.

These students met the rigorous criteria set forth by this national organization. The minimum grade-point average for acceptance is a 3.0. Students are also selected based upon credit hours completed, attendance, volunteer service, and membership in other student organizations.

Byron's Hannah Green graduates from Nazareth College with Doctor of Physical Therapy degree

Two Genesee County students to graduate with honors from SUNY Potsdam

POTSDAM -- The State University of New York at Potsdam will recognize nearly 900 candidates for graduation with a special virtual Commencement celebration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 23.

The SUNY Potsdam Class of 2020 will be honored in an online ceremony and watch party on the traditional Commencement day, until the College is able to safely hold an in-person event honoring all of this year's bachelor's and master's graduates at a later date.

The graduates include:

  • Lily Hamill, of Batavia, who is graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature/Writing and Middle/Secondary English Education.
  • Hannah Rosicka, of Le Roy, who is graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and International Studies.

Batavia's Natalie Rogers named to Provost's List at Capital University in Ohio

To be named to the Provost's List, full-time, degree-seeking students must have achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.70.
