Donald C. Almeter

Donald C. Almeter, 92, of Varysburg formerly of North Java, entered heaven peacefully Thursday February 25, 2016 at Elderwood Nursing Home in Cheektowaga. Donald was born July 28, 1923 in North Java, New York to the late Edward J. (Josephine Seewaldt) Almeter. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Glenora E. (Perry) Almeter and brothers Vincent Almeter, E. Wilson (Red) Almeter, Bernard Almeter.

Donald was the owner/operator of Almeter Garage in North Java for more than 30 years, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1946. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church for most of his life; member of the American Legion for many years; as well as a volunteer of the North Java Fire Co for over 70 years and was volunteer Chief for 33 of those years. He was also partner in establishing the Volunteer North Java Rescue Squad in 1959 with its first ambulance.  Donald became an EMT and then helped teach their firemen to become to become EMT’s. In addition, Donald was the main catalyst in erecting the current North Java Fire Co. building. He was involved with the Wyoming County Fire District and Fire Board. Donald was an avid hunter for most of his life and part of the “Sugar Hill Gang”.

He was survived by his children Joanne M. (Gugino) Almeter of Buffalo, David D. (Roberta) Almeter of Rochester, Diane E. Almeter-Marsh of Buffalo; 4 grandchildren Erin Zarcone, Michael Gugino, Kristopher Almeter and Alexandra (Todd) Gugino-Piotrowski; 2 great-grandchildren Emily and Lyla; sister Lorraine E. (Almeter) Garlock along with many nieces and nephews and friends.

Friends are invited to call on Friday March 4, 2016 from 1-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Marley Funeral Home 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday March 5, 2016 at Holy Family Church (St. Nicholas Church) 4316 Route 98 North Java, New York 14113. He will be laid to rest in St. Nicholas Cemetery at a later date.
