Elsie I. Howard

Batavia - Mrs. Elsie I. Howard, 85, of Batavia, entered into rest Monday (September 3, 2012)at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Howard was born December 5, 1926 inKarthus, PA, a daughter of the late Leonard and Hazel (Gross) Rupe.

For the last five years she was a resident of the Genesee County Nursing Home. 

Elsie was employed at both of the hospitals in Batavia.  First, at St. Jerome’s Hospital in food service for 12 years and then for 12 years at Genesee Memorial Hospital in housekeeping.

Elsie enjoyed teaching vacation bible school and Sunday school.  She went into clown ministries having designed and hand sewn all of her own costumes.  Elsie also enjoyed gardening and her turtles.

Survivors include four daughters, Gloria (Raland) Boyce of Pavilion, Doris Keane of Tennessee, Joyce (Joe) Jewett of Oakfield and Shirley (the late Donald) Durham of Basom; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, four brothers and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia.  Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Batavia Assembly of God, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia.  Burial will be in Indian Falls Cemetery.

Raymond R. Salada Sr.

Raymond R. Salada Sr., 80 of Perry died September 1, 2012 at East Side Nursing Home in Warsaw. He was born in DuBois, PA on June 2, 1932 to the late Chester (Cleta Wheeland) Salada. Mr. Salada was retired from Champion Products in Perry. He was a sports enthusiast that loved the Pittsburg Steelers, playing cards and bowling. He is preceded in death by his wife Lois (Ludwig) Salada and a sister Rachel Luckenbach. 

He is survived by his sons Chester (Kathryn) Salada of Perry; Raymond (Donna) Salada Jr. of Fillmore; daughters Lucia (Doug Jones) LaFrance of Perry; Cathy (Gerry) Freeman of Attica; sister Alfreda Burkovich of Greece; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Norman H. Havens

Mr. Havens was born in Batavia 81 years ago to the late Ralph and Irene Heale Havens. Mr. Havens worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Batavia for 37 years before retiring. He was a member of the New York Army National Guard in Batavia, and he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. In his later high school years and beyond he sang in a Barbershop Quartet. He was a former member of the Batavia American Legion and VFW, also the former Batavia Moose Club. Mr. Havens enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, waterskiing, building model airplanes and making them fly, but his greatest enjoyment was his 6 grandchildren who he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother the late Douglas Havens

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Anna Mae "Anne" (Scalia) Havens of Batavia and 2 sons Rick (Melissa) Havens and Randy (Caryn) Havens both of Batavia 2 sister-in laws Jean Havens and Jane Scalia and a brother in-law Anthony (Julia) Scalia all of Batavia. 6 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins, also survive

Mr. Robin Jon Branton

Stafford- Mr. Robin Jon Branton, 52, a former employee at Automotive Corporation in Batavia, died Friday, August 31, 2012 at home.  He was previously employed as a Probation Officer for Genesee County and the Prudential Life Insurance Co.
 
Mr. Branton was born May 5, 1960 in Batavia, the son of the late Raymond and Jean Robertson Branton Platten of Stafford.
 
He was a member and past Assistant Chief and past Chief of the Stafford Fire Department, a lifetime member of the Stafford Fire Department Exempts and a volunteer with the Genesee County Auxiliary Police and the LeRoy Volunteer Ambulance.  In addition to being active with the Fire Department he enjoyed gardening, cooking, model trains and the Batavia Muckdogs.
 
Surviving along with his mother is his wife, Lyndy Saile Branton; his children Peter and Danielle; two brothers, Rick (Gretchen) Branton and Donn (Yvonne) Branton, both of Stafford; two sisters, Laurie (Norman) Itjen of Elba and Terri (Tom) Starowitz of Stafford; his mother-in-law, Mary Saile of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.
 
Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at theH. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia.  Services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.  Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery.  

Carmen E. Miranda

Carmen E. Miranda, of Alden, NY, passed away Aug. 28, 2012. He was the husband of Violetta L. Miranda, who preceded him in death. He was the dear father of Carmen Jr. (Joanne), Linda (Bernard) Fix, and Anthony (Teresa) Miranda.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Brother of Salvatore (Linda), Annamarie, Edward and predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 1) at St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Alden. Family and friends will assemble at the Charles Meyer Funeral Home, located at 13228 Broadway, Alden, from 6 to 8 tonight and on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and also at 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, 220 Richmond Ave., Batavia, NY 14020

Nellie M. Lanckton

Nellie was born in Perry NY on January 12, 1936 a daughter of the late Ward O. Laura Belle Niver Maxson. Nellie was a 1954 graduate of Perry Central School. She had worked for the former Ben Franklin, Champion Products, Robeson Cutlery, and Perry Knitting Mill, the Perry Central School, Perry Public Library and retired from M&T Bank in 2004. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perry, the Moose Club in Warsaw and the Tuesday Night bowling league. She enjoyed bowling, sewing, cooking, and especially enjoyed the company of her children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her first husband Albert Townes who died in 2002; siblings Laura Schwab, Mary Dumbleton, Martin, Ward, Reginald Maxson and a brother-in-law Clayton Shirley.

She is survived by her husband Philip Lanckton whom she married in 2008, a daughter Susan Butler of Chipley, Fla., 3 sons: Steven (Patricia) Townes , Stuart (Lisa) Townes and Skyler (Carly) Townes all of Perry, 2 sisters: Betsy Shirley of Perry and Eva Mae (Devoughn) Speicher of Grants Pass, Or. Brothers and Sister in-laws: Mary (Jerome) Lemley of Pavilion, Frank Crawford of Fairbanks, Al.,12 grandchildren: Katie Barajas, Susan Martinez, Jenny, David and Patty Ziolkowski, Steven Jr., Amber, Joel, Matthew, Key, Briar and Alexander Townes and 12 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior visitation. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday August 29th at 3:00pm at Grace Cemetery in Castile. On Tuesday evening August 28th there with be a gathering at the Perry Vets Club for a Celebration of Life.

Edward G. Herbert

Edward G. Herbert, 33, of New York City,  formerly of Castile and Rochester died Saturday (Aug, 25, 2012) unexpectedly at his home. He was born in Warsaw June 29, 1979, aa son of the late Robert Herbert and Rose Seavert Spencer of Castile. Edward was a 1997 graduate of Letchworth Central, received an associates degree in business from Monroe Community College and Continental Beauty School in Rochester. He was a self employed hairdresser who had owned and operated the former Kelly Edwards Salon in Rochester. He enjoyed traveling, loved his work, and was always the life of the party. He is preceded in death by his father Robert Herbert who died in 1994, a sister Christa Herbert who died in 1983, grandparents Jeanne Seavert, Edward (Ethel) Herbert.

Survivors include his mother Rose (James) Spencer of Castile; two sisters, Marie Herbert of Binghamton and Dawn (Jeff White) Ebner of Silver Springs; two step-brothers: Chris Spencer of Batavia and Scott (Tiffany) Spencer of Simpsonville, S.C.; his grandfather: Richard Seavert of Darien, Ga., a nephew, Shae Ebner; four nieces, Alexsis Ebner, Lakayla Herbert, Olivia and Ava Spencer along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Lawson J. Pontius

Lawson J. Pontius, 102 of Batavia, August 27, 2012 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born August 10, 1910 on the family farm near Geneva to the late Paul (Abigail Gaffney) Pontius. Mr. Pontius has been a resident of Batavia since 1926. He worked for the Mancuso Auto Dealerships for 38 years. During the depression he and Tyler Peck operated the Main Garage in Batavia. During the war he worked at Curtiss Wright in Buffalo and he retired from McGregor Buick-Pontiac in 1976. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and had served on the Board of Trustees. His interests included writing poetry and reading the history of vintage automobiles and airplanes. He also enjoyed being with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Emma Netzen Pontius who died in 2007, daughter and son in law Lois (Norris) Geer, son in law Gary Bauer and sisters Eleata Netzen, Edna Trout, Lucy Jewell and Helen Hottois.

He is survived by his daughter Sally Bauer of Ontario, NY, 5 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys Louise Shetler

Gladys Louise Shetler, 83 of Dansville, died August 26, 2012 after a long illness at Highland Hospital in Rochester. She was born in Dansville on October 29, 1928 to the late Harold (Mildred Holden) Cork. Gladys graduated in 1946 from Dansville High School. While attending school she started at the age of fourteen as a Candy Stripper and went on to become an LPN in Dansville Hospital and the Kings Daughters Home. Later she worked as a private in home nurse until she became disabled in 1972 and was forced to retire. Gladys remained active in her church (Dansville Free Methodist Church) where she served as a C.Y.C Director, Sunday School Teacher & led several Bible studies, she loved counseling, mentoring and worked on the Prayer Chain. She also served as a Den Mother in the Scouts. Gladys was known for her hospitality and her house was always full of love and good food. She is preceded in death by her husbands Ivan John Dale and Arthur William Shetler, one daughter Anna Faye Melenbacker and two siblings.

She is survived by one sibling Donald Cork of Greece; seven children Harold (Carol) Dale of Cohocton; Frances Magee of Perkinsville; David Dale of Dansville; Kathleen Slack of Dansville; Norma Monteleone of Warsaw; Wanda Jones of Gainsville; Gerald Shetler of Loomis, NE; 28 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and many wonderful friends.

Warren R. Schenck

Darien - Warren R. Schenck, 93, a life long resident of Darien, passed away Friday (August 24, 2012) at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia.

Warren was born June 17, 1919, in Buffalo, a son of the late Horace and Mildred Rudd Schenck. He was a shop foremen at Boyle's Motor's in Batavia and retired from Doehler National Lead in Batavia. Warren was a World War II Veteran, achieving the rank of Staff Sargent in the 817th Tank Destroyer Battalion, serving in the Eastern European Theatre from 1942-1945. He loved having fun with his family, especially his grandson and great grandsons. Warren was well known for his garden, humor, pleasant personality and his mechanical skills.

Warren was the husband of the late Jeanette Krauss Schenck and brother of the late Willard Schenck, Myron Schenck and Alma Darling.

Surviving are two sons,  Jerry and (Kathy) Schenck of Darien and Victor Schenck of Darien; one grandson, Jerid (Cathy) Schenck of Darien and two great grandsons, Justin and Cooper Schenck; two sisters, Dorothy Willard of Corfu and Lois Schuhmann of Cheektowaga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Family and friends may call Tuesday 3-7 p.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc. 4-6 Main Street, Corfu. Private burial at the convenience of the family in Darien Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for special distribution.
