Obituaries

James A. Decker, 84 of Batavia, died June 21, 2012 peacefully at his home. He was born July 8, 1927 in Batavia to the late James M. (Ruth E. Hilbert) Decker. Mr. Decker served as the principle at the Lima Christian School. He actively participated in the ministries of the Lima Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church in LeRoy, Randall Baptist Church in Williamsville and most recently at the Batavia Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn Decker of Batavia; son Paul (Dondra) Decker of Williamsville; grandchildren James (Natalie) Decker, Grace (Fiancé Joe Santiso) Decker, Elizabeth and Joel Decker, great-grandson Eric Decker.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM on Friday June 22, and 2 to 4 PM on Saturday June 23, at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020. A 3:00 PM Funeral Service will take place on Sunday June 24 at the Batavia Christian & Missionary Alliance Church 5220 Clinton St. Rd. Batavia, NY 14020. Medina - Alvina M. Peterson, 102, formerly of Corfu, passed away at Orchard Manor Nursing Home in Medina, where she had been a resident since July 2006.Alvina was born June 8, 1910 in Tracy, Minnesota, a daughter of the late John and Bertha Wedger Klehn.  She was the last surviving child of twelve children,  which included her dear twin sister, Christine Richley.  Alvina worked for Sylvania in Batavia before her retirement.  She was very handy at many things like sewing and upholstery work. She even re-upholstered a chair when she was 93 years old.  One of her very favorite pastimes was playing cards. Alvina was the oldest member of the Corfu United Presbyterian Church.

Alvina was the wife of the late Martin A. Peterson; mother of the late Eleanor P. Herman, Norman R. Peterson and Arthur Peterson; and great-grandmother of the late Nicole E. Herman.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Charles A. (Patricia) Herman of Indian Falls; nine grandchildren: Charles B. (Lori) Herman, Julie A. (Patricia Marvin) Herman, Richard B. (Debbie) Herman, Elizabeth A. "Betsy" (Sander) Abramson, Jan (Jim) Goodenbery, Barb (Ron) Thurber, Gerry (Cynthia) Peterson, Cathy (John) Marchese and Russ (Deb) Peterson: great grandmother of 23 and great-great grandmother of 11 and her former daughter-in-law, Mary (Don) Mumford. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Family and friends may call Friday 6-8 p.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc. 4-6 Main Street, Corfu. The funeral service will be held from the mortuary on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu. Albion- Jeffrey D. VanSlyke, 30, of Albion, formerly of Elba, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, (June 20, 2012)at his home, in Albion.

Mr. VanSlyke was born November 23, 1981 in Batavia, a son of David VanSlyke of Bergen and Laurie and Norm Itjen of Elba. 

Jeff was a member of the Morganville United Church of Christ.  He was a Boy Scout, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2000.  Jeff will be remembered as a gentle soul with an infectious personality.  He loved shopping and animals, especially his cats, Mama and Jasper.  He brought joy to others and to know him was to love him. 

Surviving along with his parents are two sisters, Jaime (Jeffrey) Thomas of Bergen, and Jodi VanSlyke of Elba; his maternal grandmother, Jean Branton-Platten of Stafford; a special friend, Katie (Chris) Smith of Akron.  Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.    

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond Branton as well as his paternal grandparents, C. Earl and Elaine VanSlyke. 

Friends may call on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Janice Chamberlain, 80 of Oakfield, died June 21, 2012 peacefully surrounded by her family at Crossroads House in Batavia. She was born August 11, 1931 in Batavia to the late Clayton (Thelma Meyers) Boyce. Mrs. Chamberlain was a homemaker. She was a member of the Community Bible Church and the Oakfield Historical Society. She is predeceased by son Larry Chamberlain, grandson Cory Gardner and Brother William Boyce.     

She is survived by her husband Marvin A. Chamberlain of Oakfield, son James A. Chamberlain, daughters Kathy (Ken) Gardner and Debbie Chamberlain all of Oakfield; sister Shirley (the late Wally) Mapes of Waterport, 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Special nephew Mike (Linda) Warboys and dear friend Jeanne Woodhouse also survive.  

There will be no prior calling hours. A 7:00 PM Funeral Service will be held on Saturday June 23, 2012 at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020. Interment will take place in Reed Cemetery, Oakfield.

Batavia- Robert Richard "Bud" Currier, 81, of Batavia, a retired patrolman for the Batavia City Police Department, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Hildenbrandt Hospice Care Center, in Rochester.

Mr. Currier was born July 8, 1930 in Indian Falls, NY, a son of the late Kenneth Manning and Iva Melrose (Sanders) Currier.

He served honorably with the US Navy during the Korean War.  He was a patrolman for the City of Batavia Police Department for 30 years, 15 years of which were as a motorcycle traffic officer.  He most recently, worked for the security department at Genesee County Department of Social Services, was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veness - Strollo Post 1602, member of the Western New York Police Conference, past president of the Police Benevolent Association in Batavia and owner of the former Bud's Mobile Station.  He received great enjoyment in building and remodeling and operated a building trade business in Batavia for 40 years. 

He is survived by his wife, Vicki L. (Harrison) Currier whom he married May 14, 1976, 4 children, Judith (Robert) Bartz of Batavia, Robert K. (Susan) Currier of Hamlin, Wendy Jo (Michael) Pettinella of Batavia and Richard S. Currier of Chili; a brother, Kenneth D. (Roberta) Currier of Batavia; two sisters, Audrey (Garrett) Myer of Decker, MT and Charlotte (Joseph) Yaw of Chula Vista, CA; his father in-law and mother-in-law, Maurice & Marian Harrison of Batavia; a brother-in-law, Marvin (Louise) Harrison of VT; 7 grandchildren 9 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  

Bud’s request was that there be no services in his memory.

Mildred E. Niblock, 92, of Akron, died Monday (June 18, 2012) at the home of her daughter.

She was born in the Town of Newstead on January 24, 1920, a daughter of the late Irving and Maude Hunt Beeman.

Mildred was an accountant with United Telephone Co. in Florida and a member of the Tice & Shores Women of the Moose #562 in Florida.

She was the wife of the late Keith Niblock. 

Surviving is a daughter and son in law, Sharon and Thomas Schumacher of Akron. Sons and daughters in law, Ronald and Patricia Lederhouse of Akron, Gary and Carol Lederhouse of the Town of Royalton and Thomas and Joanne Lederhouse of Akron. Twenty grandchildren, forty one great grandchildren and nine  great, great grandchildren.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She is the mother of the late Richard (late Frances) Lederhouse.

     Age 87, of Batavia, died peacefully Thursday June 14, 2012 at United Memorial Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 7, 1924 in Holley, daughter of the late Charles & Rose (DeCarlo) Fallato, also preceded in death by her brother Anthony Fallato; sisters Mary Mower, Anna Spell & Viola Starkweather.

     Lucy was a member of Ascension Parish and worked as department manager for the former Montgomery Ward Co. before her retirement. She and her husband enjoyed 26 wonderful years in Jensen Beach, FL where she had many dear friends and loved to play bingo, cards and going to the casino every chance she had. She will be remembered as a loving, caring person who especially loved her family.

     She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years Anthony Fallato; beloved daughter Donna (Allen) Jackett; sons Anthony & Robert Strollo all of Batavia; 5 grandchildren Courtney Jackett of Batavia, Shawn Jackett of Fairport, Andy Strollo of Batavia, Lacie (Jason) Snell of Stafford & Katie (Jeremy) Cosimeno of Batavia; 5 great-grandchildren Peyton Armison, Bryson Snell, Gianna & Gabriella Strollo and Nicholas Cosimeno; sister Florence Passarell; sister-in-law Lydia Fallato both of Holley along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

     There is no prior visitation and funeral services will be held privately by the family. Memorials in Lucy's memory are suggested to the family for the Alheimer's Association. Batavia- Mr. Joseph F. Vanelli, 85, of Batavia, passed away Friday, (June 15, 2012)at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Vanelli was born October 29, 1926 in LeRoy, a son of the late Anthony and Blanche (Hale) Vanelli.

Joe was an avid Yankee and Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He loved going to flea markets as well as garage sales.  Mr. Vanelli was a lover of antiques and liked to pass time by playing cards as well as completing jigsaw puzzles.  He also enjoyed making lamps.    

He is the husband of Alice E. (Henry) Vanelli.  They were married June 6, 1948 and recently celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary. 

Along with his wife, Joesph is survived by his daughter, Darcia (David) Barone of Batavia; four grandchildren, David (Tonya) Barone, Holly (Scott) Pownell, Marybeth (Justin McGirr) Stefani, and Timothy Barone, all of Batavia; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (Loretta) Vanelli of Batavia; sister, Betty (Joe) Matinez of Stafford; and a sister-in-law, Betty Vanelli of Batavia.  Several nieces and nephews also survive. 

He is preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Michael Barone, who passed away in 1996; four siblings, Leonard (late Dorothy) Vanelli, Margaret (late Brownie) Pietrowski, Pearl (late John) Byzduzh, and Robert Vanelli. 

Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Geraldine M. Helmer, age 89, formerly of Lamont died on June 13, 2012 at the Wyoming County Nursing Facility in Warsaw where she had been residing.She was born in Warsaw, NY a daughter of the late Warner and AnaSatsia Nina McCarthy Ellis. Gerry was employed by the former Davis’s Store in Rock Glen, NY, Motorola in Arcade, NY, and retired from Craig DDSO in Sonyea, NY. A member of the Grange, she enjoyed playing cards, yahtzee, bingo, reading, traveling, calling on friends, and especially enjoyed her family at many get togethers. She is preceded in death by her first husband Carlos Spencer and second husband Ervin Helmer. 

She is survived by 6 children: David (Nancy Kramell) Spencer of Pavilion, James (Rose) Spencer of Castile, Donald (Kathy) Spencer of Castile, Joan (Donnie Hardaway) Spencer of Riverview, Fl., Ann Reynard of Rochester and Gert (Kevin Hanlon) Fulmer of Liverpool, NY, 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

William H. Barrett age 86, formerly of Leicester, died at the Avon Nursing Home in Avon where he had been residing. He was born in Leicester, NY on December 23,1925 a son of the late William T. (Alice Stocking) Barrett. Bill worked for the former TB Hospital in Mt. Morris as head baker, then worked for the Attica Correctional Facility in Attica as a cook, and retired from the Perry Central School in 1988 where he worked in the custodial department. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Perry Center since 1945, a 50 year member and past Master of the Constellation Lodge #404 of the Free and Accepted Masons, a former member of the Castile Historical Club and Wyoming County Historical Pioneer Association. He enjoyed being Santa Claus in the 1960’s and was very involved in carpentry and woodworking. He is preceded in death by brothers Cecil, Otis and John Barrett.

He is survived by his his wife Doris B. Barrett of Geneseo who he married in 1948, a son: Robert Barrett of Morrison, CO., 2 daughters: Betty (Larry) Ressue of Newark and Susan (James) Elkins of Alpharetta, GA., 7 grandchildren: Jennifer Foster, Rachael Franklin, Robert A. Barrett, Karen and David Ressue, Andrew and Katie Elkins, along with 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
