Peggy J. Monachino

 

Peggy J. Monachino, 70 of Batavia, NY. Died October 23, 2010 peacefully at her son’s home surrounded by her family. Born December 3, 1939 in Abingdon, VA daughter of the late Helen (Coe) Cumbo. Mrs. Monachino was retired from Wal-Mart. She loved reading, traveling, garage and yard sales along with being an avid animal lover. She loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a brother-in-law Joseph Fragnito. 
 
Survivors include son Sam N. (Lori) Monachino of Batavia; brother Robert (Allison) Cumbo of Cumming, GA; sister Connie Fragnito of Rochester; 5 grandchildren Jessica, Christopher (Alaina), Benjamin, Michael Long and Chase Monachino, 2 great-grandchildren Jacob and Jasmin Long along with several nieces and nephews also survive.
 
Calling hours and funeral services will be private for family only. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Batavia.

MR. CHARLES D. "CHIP" BARNARD, SR.

Batavia - Mr. Charles D. “Chip” Barnard, Sr., age 69, of Batavia, former controller for G.T.E. Sylvania in Batavia, died Friday, October 22, 2010 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

Mr. Barnard was born April 21, 1941 in Batavia, the son of the late Glenn and Eleanor Norris Barnard.
 
A 1973 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, he was a  member of St. James Episcopal Church for over 46 years, he was a member of the Moose Club and loved watching trains and was an avid pheasant and deer hunter.
 
Following his employment from Sylvania, he worked at Fisher Price and Robison Appliance. Following his retirement he worked at Tops Markets as a product director and as a driver for GCASA.
 
At age 14, he began scuba diving and worked for many years as an underwater recovery scuba diver for the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. An animal lover, he will be dearly missed by his dogs Blondie May and Autumn Star whom he loved taking for walks.
 
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean M. Pratt Barnard whom he married June 28, 1963; a son, Charles D. Barnard, Jr.; a daughter, Kim (James) Ficarella of Batavia; two granddaughters, Samantha and Nicole Ficarella of Batavia; sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Marilyn (John) Orlando of Batavia, Bill (Elaine) Pratt of Rochester, Mary Jo (George) Davis of Batavia and the late Margaret Wescott. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
 
Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and 9 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Episcopal Church, 405 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia. Bette S. Evans

Bette S. Evans, 76 of Perry died October 22, 2010 at the Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw. Mrs. Evans was born in Silver Lake, NY daughter of the late Eldon Safford and Verda (Clark) Safford of Warsaw. She worked for over 20 years at Mallory Timers in Warsaw. She loved sewing, embroidering, computers and photography.

Mrs. Evans is survived by her husband James E. Evans of Perry; sons David Evans of Buffalo; Daniel (Holly) Evans of Perry Center; brothers William (Sally) Safford of Perry; Roger (Donna) Safford of Lima; sister Edna (Harold) Schutte of Fairport; 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild along with many nieces, nephews also survive.

Friends are invited to call on Monday October 25th from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday October 26th at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Silver Springs.

Onalee E. Mills

 

Warsaw - Mrs. Onalee E. Mills, 93, of Warsaw and formerly of Genesee County, died Thursday, (October 21, 2010)at the Eastside Nursing Home in Warsaw.
Mrs. Mills was born October 1, 1917 in Basom, the daughter of the late Luwellyn and Luella (Sprague) Hatch.
She was a registered nurse at the former Genesee Memorial Hospital and former St. Jerome's Hospital for 25 years. Mrs. Mills was a member of First Baptist Church of Batavia and attended the Batavia Christian Women's Club. She also belonged to The Genesee County Historical Society and participated in The Current Books and Topics Club. 
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Charles) Canon of Wyoming and Gail (James) Richert of Lakeport, Michigan; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mills is predeceased by her two husbands, Albert Neth, who died in 1970 and Olin Mills who died in 1980. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Edward Hatch and Lloyd Hatch.  
Calling hours will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Batavia, 306 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Stafford Rural Cemetery. Lori Ann Nelson

Bergen - Mrs. Lori Ann Nelson, 49, of Bergen, a bookkeeper for the Town of Bergen and Joanne Amon, CPA, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mrs. Nelson was born February 10, 1961 in Jamestown, the daughter of John "Jack" and Mary (Tornstrom) Rounds of Las Vegas, NV.

She was a member for 11 years and Vice President for 8 years of the Byron Bergen Central School Board of Education, a voting delegate to the New York State School Board Association, and served on the Executive Board of the Genesee Valley School Boards Association. She was a member of the Byron Bergen Sports Boosters and volunteer for school musical productions. She remained active in student activities long after her children had graduated from Byron Bergen High School and was active in Boy Scouts and former Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts as well as volunteering at the Bergen 1st Presbyterian Church Nursery and Vacation Bible School.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Nelson whom she married October 10, 1981; a son, Mitchel Nelson of Bergen; 2 daughters, Bobbi Gayle Nelson of Niagara Falls and Regina Nelson of Herkimer, 2 brothers, Randy (Bonnie) Rounds of Las Vegas and David Rounds; several nieces, nephews and many close friends whom she welcomed into her family.  

Friends may call on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 S. Lake St., Bergen. Services will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Bergen 1st Presbyterian Church.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Condolences may be made at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com.  

 

MICHAEL C. STEUBER

LeRoy - Mr. Michael C. Steuber, 67, of LeRoy, retired forklift mechanic for Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, died Sunday, October 17, 2010at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mr. Steuber was born May 29, 1943 in Rochester, a son of the late Edward Carl and Margaret Henrietta Steuber.
 
Mr. Steuber served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War attaining the rank of sergeant. He worked on jet engines at Da Nang Air Base and received five medals for his service.
 
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Gloria Greenman Steuber; his son, Keith (Lydia) Steuber of North Carolina; his step-daughter, Lisa (Dan) Tasmer of Friendship; his brother, Edward Steuber of Kendall; four grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and friends.
 
There are no prior calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of LeRoy, 5 East Main Street, LeRoy, New York 14482. Condolences may be made at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com.

Fred J. Allein

Batavia - Fred J. Allein, 88, of Batavia, a retired Master Sergeant of the US Air Force and retired Director of the Emergency Management Services, Disaster Preparedness, died unexpectedly Friday, October 15, 2010at New York State Veteran's Home, in Batavia.

Mr. Allein was born November 24, 1921 in Buffalo, the son of the late Joseph and Helen Allein.
 
In January of 1942, Mr. Allein enlisted in the Army Air Force. Overseas assignments followed in June of 1942 and he was shipped to Port Tufie, Egypt. He became one of the first Americans in Africa in support of the British Eighth Army, being assigned to the British 376th “Hell” Bomb Squadron. He then spent a year in Italy and returned to the US in 1944. In February of 1953 he was recalled to active duty. In November of 1953 he was ordered to Germany, where he spent 5 years and then to Alaska. He eventually retired from the US Air Force while stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base, SAC, on August 31, 1967.
 
He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, former member of Stafford Country Club, Batavia Country Club, BPO Elks, LOOM, Polish Falcons, Godfrey’s Pond and St. Nick’s Club. Mr. Allein belonged to the American Legion where he served as Commander and was a member of the VFW. He especially enjoyed playing cards.
 
Surviving is his wife, Gloria Athoe Allein whom he married December 17, 1944. He was grandfather of the late Richard Whitcombe who died in 2006 and brother of the late Shirley Jahries.
 
Also surviving are one son, James (Cheryl) Allein of Attica; two daughters, Gloria (Robert) Chapman of Byron and Pamela (David) Whitcombe of Batavia and one sister, Joan Summers of Rochester. He was the loving grandfather of Brent Chapman, Robert Chapman, Rebecca (Matthew) Roggow, Jeffrey (Shannon) Whitcombe, Ryan Whitcombe, Abby Allein, Alyssa Allein and Braden Allein; great-grandfather of Jared and Jacob Roggow, Kaelin Chapman, Andrew, Noah and Cora Whitcombe. Also surviving are a granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca Whitcombe and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Josephine Pacer

Batavia - Mrs. Josephine Pacer, 86, of Batavia, a retired inspector at Oliver's Candies, died Friday, (October 15, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Mrs. Pacer was born August 18, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Louis and Rose Scammaca DeFino.

She was a member of Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert (Susan) Pacer of Stafford, Martin Pacer of Akron and Alan (Eileen) Pacer of Tennessee; grandchildren, Kevin Pacer of LeRoy, Kathleen Pacer of Cleveland, Martin (Danielle) Pacer of Corfu, Sarah Pacer of Clearwater, Florida, Andrew Pacer, Stacia Pacer and Vincent Pacer, all of Naples, Florida; great grandchildren, Annabel Rumenapp and Michael Pacer; a sister, Jennie Hawks of Batavia; two sisters-in-law, Alice (Frank) Anders of Medina and Rita (Homer) Warden of Akron and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Arthur F. Pacer died in 1997. She is the grandmother of the late Jason Pacer, sister of the late Salvatore "Spats" DeFino, Mary Klute, Anne LaFarnara, Millie Povorski and Betty Margarine and sister-in-law of the late Felicia Lotz and Donald Pacer.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main St. Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will at Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty St. on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery Memorials may be made to the family for distribution to various charities.  Condolences may be made at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com

James V. Arena Jr.

James V. Arena Jr., 59 of Batavia, NY. Died October 14, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health for the last 2 years. Born August 6, 1951 in Batavia, NY. Son of the late James V. Arena Sr. (June 17, 1986) and the late Martha (Valery) Arena (Feb. 1, 2010). 

James worked for Conrail until he became disabled. He was best known for his role as lead guitarist in the rock band The Squires playing for the Lions Club, Buffalo Autorama shows, Batavia High School Plays and disabled children programs. He would teach exceptional children instruments which resulted in comments to the letters to the Editor in a time when long hair was in style “We do well to remind ourselves from time to time man looketh upon the outward appearance but God looketh upon the heart.” James had an exceptional gift of working with the disabled and will be sadly missed by little Eric. 

James had a heart of gold and will be deeply missed by his loving family. Brother Jerry Arena of Batavia; sisters Nancy Arena of Batavia; Mary (William) Davis III of Batavia; Dr. Linda Arena of Ohio. He leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews, Tina (Dwayne) Fonda Sr., Roger (Amy) Fagan, Evelyn Davis, Dwayne Fonda Jr., Taler Fonda, Tieryn Fonda, Tate Fonda, Travis Fagan Amy Lee Fagan and Tyler Arena Fagan. 

There will be no prior calling hours. A 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday October 19, 2010 at Resurrection Parish-St. Mary’s Church 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, NY 14020.

Mary A. Sputore

 

   Mary A. Sputore, 84 of Batavia, NY. Died October 15, 2010 at the New York State Veterans Home. Born September 28, 1926 in Batavia, New York, daughter of the late Ralph (Jennie Bonarigo) Soccio. Mrs. Sputore worked for many years at GTE Sylvania. She was a member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church. Mrs. Sputore was a past member of the Catholic Daughters and the Altar & Rosary Society. She was an avid bingo and card player. She is preceded in death by her husband John Sputore (1982) and brother Rocco Soccio. 
 
She is survived by son Paul (Mary) Sputore of Batavia; daughter Donna (Jeff) Gillard of Batavia; brothers Joseph (Shirley) Soccio of FL; James Soccio of Batavia; grandchildren Christopher (Carrie) Sputore, Geoffrey (Keri) Roche, Michael (Julie) Sputore, Melissa (Ryan) Biegasiewicz, 3 great-grandchildren survive along with several nieces and nephews. 
 
Friends are invited to call from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday October 17, 2010 at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 W. Main St. Batavia, NY 14020. Prayers will be recited 9:00 AM on Monday October 18, 2010 at the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 AM Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church 122 Liberty St. Batavia, NY 14020. Entombment will take place at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum in Batavia.
