Joseph J. Yunke

Joseph J. Yunke, 65 of Batavia, died  April 29, 2013. He was born April 20, 1948 in Batavia to the late Joseph (Anne Kamis) Yunke. Mr. Yunke worked for many years at Kodak in Rochester. He was a member of the Batavia Area Jaycees, the First Presbyterian Church, and the YMCA for over 30 years. Joseph was an avid runner, he enjoyed woodworking, loved to bake and cook.

He is survived by his daughter Ashley Yunke of Batavia; and a brother Bobby Yunke.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday May 2, 2013 from 6 to 7 PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street Batavia, New York 14020. A 7:00 PM Funeral Service will take place Thursday following calling at the Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Batavia Cemetery.

Nina M. Ball

Churchville ~ Nina M. Ball, age 88, passed away at home in the loving presence of her family on Saturday evening, April 27, 2013.

     She was born July 5, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Harrison and Jeanette Johnson Hale.

     Mrs. Ball was a charter member of the Open Door Baptist Church in Chili. She initially worked at an Air Force plant during WW II and eventually moved on to a real estate career, becoming a broker and formed her own brokerage business.  She was also the first female real estate broker to be named to the GRAR board.

    She is survived by her sons Donald Ball of LeRoy and Charles (Cindy) Ball of Churchville, a daughter, Carolyn (William) VanHouter of Rochester, a sister, Bessie Grasso of Batavia, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Norman Ball and Daniel DeGeorge and 11 siblings.

     Family and friends may call on the family on Tuesday from 6 ~ 9 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt 19 north) LeRoy, where services will be held Wednesday at 11 AM.  Interment will follow in Grove Place Cemetery in Chili.      

Elaine E. Fairbanks

 

Batavia - Elaine E. Fairbanks, 76, of Batavia, died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Rochester General Hospital, in Rochester.

Mrs. Fairbanks was born January 15, 1937 in Greigsville, NY, a daughter of the late George and Lucy (Boatfield) Stevens.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Batavia for the past 10 years and she enjoyed family events and trips to the Adirondacks.

She is survived by her husband, Lowell J. Fairbanks, whom she married January 15, 1956; 3 sons, sons,  Lowell Thomas (Linda) Fairbanks of Allen, TX, Lester Fairbanks of Batavia and Steven (Daphne) Fairbanks of Batavia; 2 daughters, Cheryl (Mark) Yasses of E. Bethany and Lori Beherns-Fairbanks of Batavia; 3 brothers, George (Norma) Stevens of FL, Lester (Gloria) Stevens of Byron, and Bill (Sue) Stevens of Caledonia; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

She was the sister of the late Helen Powers.  

Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 8221 Lewiston Rd., Batavia, where service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesee County Office for the Aging, 2 Bank St., Batavia, NY 14020.  Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia.  Please leave a condolence, share a story or light a candle at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com.

 

 

Richard C. Gaudioso

Richard C. Gaudioso, 77 of Pavilion, died April 25, 2013 died at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born June 27, 1935 in Rochester to the late Luke (Adalaide) Gaudioso. Mr. Gaudioso worked for many years at Dayton Rogers in Rochester and also loved his recent job as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Geneseo. He loved all animals and wildlife but especially his pets. He is preceded in death by his wife Florence (Leonard) Gaudioso; brothers Raymond, James, Harry and Frank Gaudioso; sister Esther Gaudioso. 

He is survived by his son David E. Thomas of Saint Marys, WV; daughters Linda (Myron) Bobzien of Bergen; Bonnie (Harry) Conrad of Batavia; companion Josephine King of Pavilion; sister Millie (Ron) Carpenter of Manchester, along with 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery, Batavia.

Dorothy C. Merkle-Elbel

Dorothy C. Merkle-Elbel, 84 of Batavia, passed away on April 24, 2013 at Rochester General Hospital. She was born July 19, 1928, Elba to the late Harry (Beulah Hicks) Cosway. Dorothy was the Town Clerk in Bethany for many years. She was a life member of the Bethany Fire Department Auxiliary, member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Batavia, and past member of the White Rose Rebekah Lodge. She was well known for her knitting, sewing, and making wedding gowns for her children, grandchildren and many friends. She is preceded in death by her first husband Lee Merkle (1982); son Dan Merkle (2002); brothers Frank and Robert Cosway; sisters Grace Pahuta and Beatrice Hatch.   

Survivors include her husband George K. Elbel of Batavia who she married in June of 2007; daughters Linda (Glenn) Merrill of Bethany; Christine (Edward) Haag of Houghton; daughter-in-law Deborah Merkle of Bethany; sister Mary Jane (Joseph) Marino of Batavia; 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Lillian M. Cina

Lillian M. Cina, 89 of Batavia  died Tuesday April 23, 2013 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born January 16, 1924 in Batavia to the late Joseph (Mary Marone) Cina. Lillian was a lifelong resident of the City of Batavia and attended Batavia High School and Rochester Business Institute, Batavia Branch. She was employed for nearly 40 years as an Administrative Assistant at Genesee County Health Department prior to her retirement. At the time of her retirement she had the highest seniority of all County employees. Lillian was a lifelong member of Ascension Parish (St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church), a member of its Altar and Rosary Society and President of that Society for many years. She was active in all facets of her Church community through the Altar and Rosary Society, as a Bingo volunteer and during the Church lawn fetes. Lillian’s bookkeeping abilities were of great assistance to the Parish on a regular basis with regard to all Bingo accounts and especially during the lawn fete. In 2003 Lillian was honored by Diocese of Buffalo with the prestigious St. Joseph the Worker award which is given to a lay person who exemplifies the spirit of service to her Church and her community. Lillian loved her extended family and her interests included spending much time with her Marone and Cina family members.    

Lillian was predeceased by her maternal aunt Virginia Sanfratello; maternal uncles Frank “Wiley” Marone, Louis Marone and Angelo (Sheiko) Marone. She was also predeceased by her paternal uncles Samuel Cina, Charles Cina, and paternal aunts Rose Quagliana, Mary Ficarella and Mildred DelPlato.    

She is survived by her aunts and uncles Ann Marone, Joseph Marone, Patrick Marone, Gertrude Woodring and numerous cousins in the Marone and Cina family.  

There will be no prior calling hours. A 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday May 3, 2013 at Ascension Parish 19 Sumner St. Batavia, NY 14020. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.

Dorothy T. Phillips

Dorothy T. Phillips, 88, of Batavia passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at home, surrounded by all of her loving family. “Dottie” was born Feb. 6, 1925, in The Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Patrick & Bridgett Matterson Somers of The Bronx, NY. She graduated from St, Vincent’s School of Nursing in Manhattan, NY, in 1946, and was employed as a registered nurse in her 20’s where she met the love of her life, Dr. Paul J. Phillips, DVM.  Dottie and Paul celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in September of 2012.  She also worked in the 80’s for the WNY DDSO group home on Bank Street in Batavia.  Dottie enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren & great-children. and many, many friends.  She also enjoyed antiquing, reading and cooking.

Surviving along with husband Paul, four sons: Paul (Lisa Bosley) of Loveland CO, Edward of  Batavia, Michael of Washington Crossing, PA, Daniel (Jacquie) of Batavia, three daughters: Anne of Batavia, Constance Chisolm of Rochester, NY, and Katie (Robert) Brown of Batavia.  17 Grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

There will be no prior visitation.  A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.

HENRIETTA "HENIA" SZYDLOWSKI

Age 92, of Batavia, died peacefully Tuesday April 23, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center, her family at her side. She was born January 23, 1921 in Medina, NY to the late Peter & Ethel (Kiebala) Gorczyca, also preceded in death by her brother Edward.

     Mrs. Szydlowski was a lifetime member of Ascension Parish and its Altar & Rosary Society. She was a wonderful caring wife, mother and grandmother who had a true love for life. Henia was a friend to all who came in contact with her, remembering her beautiful smile and blue eyes that greeted them.

     Surviving is her beloved husband of 63 years, Matthew Szydlowski of Batavia; loving son, David (Jill) Szydlowski of Pittsford and their children, Jamie, Carly and Matthew along with several nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     Family and friends may attend prayers 10:00 AM Saturday April 27, 2013 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 followed by a 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Site). In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the St. Vincent DePaul Society and entombment will be in the Father T. Bernard Kelly Mausoleum at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Jean I. Claus

 

Bergen – Jean I. Claus, 78, of Bergen, the church secretary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen, passed away Monday, (April 22, 2013) at Rochester General Hospital.

Mrs. Claus was born April 18, 1935 in Rochester, a daughter of the late Willis J. and Helen (Brockmyer) MacDonald.

Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen.  Her favorite time of year was spring, and she greatly enjoyed gardening and flowers.  She deeply loved her husband, children, and grandchildren.  Jean will be remembered by all who knew her as a kind compassionate person. 

She is the wife of Roland D. “Ron” Claus whom she married June 16, 1956.

Along with her husband, Jean is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Patricia) Claus of Victor, Eric (Laurie) Claus of Bergen, and Timothy (Dawn) Claus of Batavia; grandchildren, Jeannie (Simon) Sheehan of VA and Michelle (Matt) Drahms of Clyde; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Audrey Sheehan of VA, Tanner and Adrianna Drahms of Clyde; a brother, Bruce (Elaine) MacDonald of Irondequoit; a sister, Mary (David) MacConnell of FL.  A sister-in-law, Muriel MacDonald of Sodus and Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.

Jean is preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Victoria Claus as well as a brother, Richard MacDonald.  

There will be no prior visitation.  Jean’s Memorial Service will be held Sunday (May 5, 2013) at 2:00 p.m. (Please note change in service date). at the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen, 38 South Lake Street, Bergen.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen, P.O. Box 206, Bergen, NY 14416.  Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery, Bergen.  Arrangements were entrusted to the H.E. Turner & Co. Hinda A. Naschke

Hinda was born in Cleveland, Ohio a daughter of the late George and Rae LeGrand Doerr. Mrs. Naschke received her Bachelors degree at Nazareth College and Master Degree at Boston College. She was a social worker for the Rochester Psychiatric Center and retired from Monroe County as a probation officer for 23 years. She volunteered for the advocacy for the mentally impaired for many years after her retirement, she was active and supported the Alumni for Nazareth and Boston College, and was a member of the former Perry Moose Lodge.

She is survived by her husband George H. Naschke whom she married on April 24, 1953, a daughter; Barbara A. (George) Hecht of Muldraugh, KY, 5 sons; Kurt (Delia) Naschke of Virginia Beach, VA., George G. (Lori) Naschke of Newark, John (Kit) Naschke of Perry, Quintin (Brenda) Naschke of San Diego, Ca, Martin (Angela) Naschke of Castile, 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may call on Sunday April 28th from 12-3pm at the Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, LLC. 98 N. Main St. Perry, NY 14530. Funeral services will be held on Monday April 29th at 1:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Interment will take place in LaGrange Cemetery, Perry.
