Mr. Howard A. Parker

Batavia- Howard A. Parker, 97, of Batavia, died Wednesday, (April 13, 2011) at Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mr. Parker was born April 10, 1914 in Castile, a son of the late Roscoe and Alice (Hare) Parker.

He was a graduate of Batavia High School, class of 1933, and served four years in the United States Army during WWII.  Mr. Parker was wounded twice and was awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge for front line duty.  He was one of the survivors of the Belgian Liner Leopoldville, which was sunk by a German torpedo on Christmas Eve 1944 off the coast of Cherbourg. 

He was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans.  He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. 

Mr. Parker farmed for many years on the family farm in Batavia and later worked as a caretaker for P.D. Services in Pavilion.

He is survived by a niece, Joyce (Daryl) Kohorst of Corfu; two great-nephews, Jeff (Sandra Alba) Kohorst of Florida and Charles (Lenora) Kohorst of Corfu; three great-great-nephews, Jeffrey M. Kohorst of Stafford, Jacob and Joseph Kohorst both of Corfu.  One great-great-great nephew and many cousins also survive.

He is preceded in death by his brother, James Parker and step-brother John W. Ahl.      

Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where a funeral service will follow calling hours at 4 p.m.  Burial be in Glenwood Cemetery, Perry.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
