PAUL N. MONACHINO

 Batavia- Mr. Paul N. Monachino, age 85, of Batavia, a retired manager of Texaco Inc.’s Ontario Station, past president of the board of directors of Genesee Region Independent Living Center and Sertoma Club of Western New York, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011at Unity Health System, in Rochester following a brief illness.

Mr. Monachino was born September 21, 1925 inBatavia, a son of the late Onofrio and Rose Marabella Monachino.

Mr. Monachino graduated from Elba High School and later moved to Batavia where he served on the City Zoning Board and with the Knights of Columbus. In 1986, he was elected Governor of the Sertoma Club of Western New York and was honored as Sertoman of the year for his work in speech and hearing therapy in 1990 and 1991. He also received the Community Spirit Award from the Genesee Region Independent Living Center in 2005.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Colantonio Monachino; daughter, Rosemarie Monachino of Batavia; daughter, Cheryl (Gary) Schmelzer of Depew and their family: Jill (Eric) Szpylman, Gary Schmelzer Jr. and Christine (Michael) Lopardi and their children: Alexander Hammann, Christina, Maria and Isabella Lopardi; daughter, Mary Jean (Rick) DiMartino of Cuba and their children: Megan, Richard, Eric and Shellie DiMartino; son, Paul (late Joan) Monachino of Elmira and their children: Kylie, Patrick and Ethan Monachino; four brothers, Samuel (Catherine) Monachino of Elba, Onofrio (Nancy) Monachino and Joseph (Anne) Monachino, both of Missouri and Thomas (late Joan) Monachino of Ohio, a sister, Suzanne (Donald) Drachenburg of Batavia; two brothers-in-law, Harry Capadano of Florida and Amos Groulx of Ogdensburg; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Monachino of Batavia and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is the brother of the late Patsy Monachino, Philippa (George) Burns, Betty Capadano and Pauline Groulx.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Prayers at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church, 122 Liberty Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.
