Leo S. Mager

Leo S. Mager, 89, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Sunday (August 4, 2013) at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

He was born in Batavia, NY on August 9, 1923, a son of the late Stanley and Anna Kosciolek Mager.

Leo attended Sacred Heart School and Batavia public schools.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served aboard the U.S.S. Monterey as a gunner’s mate.  His wartime duty saw action in the Pacific Theater and the Philippines.  Leo was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.  In 1947, Leo and his brother Henry began Arctic Refrigeration Co. in Batavia and worked throughout the years with his family until his retirement in 1989.  In his retirement years, Leo was a master woodcarver and enjoyed traveling with his wife.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Dunn Mager of Batavia. Daughter, Karen (Charles) Hart of Marion, NY. Two sons, Douglas (Diane) Mager of Belchertown, MA and David (Donna) Mager of Warsaw, NY.  Six grandchildren, Caitlyn (Adam) Bishop, Taylor Hart, Carly Hart, Andrew (Kristine) Mager, Forrest Mager and Holly Mager.  Brother, Joseph (Rosemary) Mager of Batavia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was the grandfather of the late Charles Hart, Jr. and brother of the late Henry (Kathleen) Mager.

Family and friends may gather to share condolences, memories and thoughts on Wednesday from 4-7pm at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia.  Prayers will be recited on Thursday at the funeral home at 8:45am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Church) at 9:30am.  Burial will be in Millville Cemetery in East Shelby, NY.
