Batavia - Rodney A Smith, 55, of Batavia, a Machine Operator at Whiting Overhead Door, in Akron, passed away Sunday, (September 21, 2014) at Crossroads House, in Batavia.

Mr. Smith was born January 21, 1959 in Medina, a son of Laverne Smith of Basom and the late Marilou (Goetz) Smith.

He served his country honorably with the Marine Corps from 1978-1983 and received a Navy Unit Commendation while serving in Lebanon.  Rod was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Batavia and for several years coached youth football. 

He will be remembered for his love for his children, his Miami Dolphins and the Marine Corps.

Surviving along with his father are his children, Adam Smith of Batavia and Heather (Tim) Pahuta of Henrietta; a brother, Randy Smith of Basom; sisters, Rebecca (Mike) Cherry of Oakfield and Rosalie (Richard) Robinson of Basom; nieces and nephews, Michael (Cara) Robinson  of North Port, FL, Benjamin and Jessica Cherry of Oakfield, and Lola Robinson of North Port, FL.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co, Inc., 403 East Main St., Batavia and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Washington Ave., Batavia.  Rod’s Funeral Service will follow visitation at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, (September 25, 2014) also at church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Anne C. Penepent, 77 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday September 20, 2014 surrounded by her family at Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born on July 20, 1937 in Batavia to the late Arthur (Amelia Soccio) Saraceni and step-mother the late Margherita Saraceni. She is preceded in death by a grandson Vincent Gallo, brothers Thomas, Fred, James “Jeep” Saraceni; sisters Mary Chilano, Beatrice Parnell, Elizabeth Pringle and Germaine Saraceni.

Anne spent endless hours crocheting, especially baby clothes and angels. She enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo. Anne was well known by many for her cooking and baking. She was an exceptional wife and mother who was happiest cooking in her home surrounded by her entire family.

She is survived by her beloved husband Ronald D. Penepent of Batavia; daughters Darlene Gallo of Batavia; Sherry LaBorne of CA; sons Ronald “Tigar” (Patti) of TN; Charles “Chuck” of SC; Nicholas “Nick” (Barbie) Penepent of SC; James “Jimmy” (Shelly) Pringle of VA; grandchildren Nicole (fiancé Joe Dean) Gallo, Kelly Foley, Ashlee (Steven) Stutler, Anthony “AC” Penepent, Kyle LaBorne, Elizabeth (Justin Smith) Pringle, Jimmy Pringle, Melissa "Missy" (fiance Will Nusbaum) Pringle; great-grandchildren Shyanne and Steven Charles Stutler; brother Anthony “Red” (Marcy) Saraceni of Batavia; sisters Faye Coppini of Caledonia; Yolanda “Yola” (Harry) Bucceri of Oakfield; Roseanne (Donald) Showler of LeRoy; sister-in-law Josephine Saraceni of Batavia, Anne was very close to nephew Denny (Mary) Bucceri along with MANY special nieces and nephews.

William Beck, 69 of Attica, passed away on Thursday September 18, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born June 4, 1945 in Attica to the late Albert (Frances Peuckert) Beck Sr.. Mr. Beck is preceded in death by his siblings Peter and Edward Beck; Lynn Kammerer.

William Beck touched the lives, homes and businesses of many people throughout his industrious career as the head of “Beck’s Carpentry”. Not one to embrace new technology, he preferred to renovate the old. His fingers were stained with the grease and dirt of his labors. Bill was a lifelong farmer and lover of animals including cows, pigs, goats, alpacas, chickens, dogs and cats. He also loved to garden and briefly operated the vegetable stand “Billy’s Farm Market” in Attica. His vehicle of choice was a Dodge Ram truck, but a tractor, four-wheeler or snowmobile would suffice. Bill was a successful turkey hunter and dabbled in golf and fishing. He enjoyed baseball, bowling in a men’s league and loved throwing horseshoes.

Bill greatly relished his family’s tradition of hard cider, wine making/sipping, as well as maple syrup production. He came from a large German family and had a large family of his own. He was proud of his heritage and fascinated by his grandchildren. It is true that a carpenter’s house is never complete and in his later years Bill remodeled and resided in the early 1900’s farmhouse in which he was born and raised. He always referred to it as “down home”.

He is survived by his children Julie A. (Frank) Makson of Attica; William J. (Brenda) of Attica; Thomas M. (Tracy) of Lancaster; Christopher A. (Melissa) of Attica; Joseph R. (Kelly) Beck of North Java; siblings Carl (Nancy), Albert (Jeanne), Fred (Melody), Mike (Julie) Beck, Gretel (Larry) Laing, Frances Beck, Pat (Dan) Racine, Edith Haise; 9 grandchildren,1 great-granddaughter, along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Monday September 22, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at Marley Funeral Home, LLC. 135 Main Street Attica, New York 14011. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday September 23, 2014 at the Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Attica.

LeRoy ~ Edward T. Cain, age 91, formerly of Stafford, passed away Wednesday morning (Sept. 17, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

     Mr. Cain was born September 16, 1923 in Warsaw, a son of the late Thomas and Grace Fisher Cain.

     He was a long time insurance salesman throughout the area after serving with the US Army.  He eventually became the Civil Defense Director for Genesee County and was the Genesee County Republican Committee Chairman from 1967 - 1983.    

     He is survived by his step-sons; Gary (Sue) Culbertson of Richfield Springs, NY and Gordy Culbertson of Stafford, step-grandchildren; Dawn Culbertson, Lisa Culbertson, Charles Culbertson, Rebecca Forbes, Erin (James) Hall and Christian (Amy) Culbertson, 9 step-great-grandchildren, a niece, Susan Copeland of TX and a great nephew.  He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel Cain on March 26, 2014 and a sister, Imogene Pais.

     Family and friends may call on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 11:30 AM ~ 1:30 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt. 19), LeRoy where services will be held at 1:30.  Interment with military honors will follow in Morganville Cemetery.
