Charles K. Thayer, 90, of Pembroke, a farmer all his life, died Wednesday (June 25, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mr. Thayer was born in Perry Jan. 16, 1924.  He was a son of Herman Thayer and Stella Safford Thayer Schiller and a stepson of Daniel Schiller.  A graduate of Perry Central School, he worked in the Perry Knitting Mill and on various farms until 1959, when he bought his own dairy farm, Gra-Chuck Farm, in Pembroke.  He also drove school bus for Pembroke Central School in the 1960s.  He lived a simple life, and was known as a hard worker who took care of his family and farm.  He had a great sense of humor and knew how to tell a good story. He also enjoyed woodworking.

He and his wife, Grace Snyder Thayer of Pembroke, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Feb. 9.

Mr. Thayer was the brother of the late Ellis and LaVerne Thayer and Edith Bathrick, and stepbrother of the late Perry Schiller.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Sharon (late Kenneth) Larsen of Pembroke, Douglas (Shirley) Thayer of Watkins Glen, Daniel (Tracy) Thayer of Pembroke and Melody (Thomas) Gorman of Kirkville.  Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Thomas Thrane) Larsen Fuller of Schuylerville, Charles Larsen of Oakfield, Nicholas Thayer of Watkins Glen; Sarah, Danielle and Zoe Thayer, all of Pembroke; Cassandra, Patrick and Michael Gorman, all of Kirkville; Christine Gorman of East Syracuse; and Jennifer (John) Draper of Oakfield; and five great-grandchildren, Noel and Julian Thayer-Sunseri  of Pembroke, Iliana and Camden Draper of Oakfield and Ryan Gardner of East Syracuse.  A sister, Joan Nevinger of Florida, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

There are no calling hours. Services are private.

CLYDE WILLIAM DICKES Age 78, lifelong resident of Elba, died peacefully Sunday morning June 22, 2014 in Topsail Island, NC. He was born October 24, 1935 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Edward & Marian (Hoy) Dickes, also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred (Seibert); siblings, Richard, Gary and Elaine Kaufman, Francis Hoy.

   Mr. Dickes retired from Birdseye Foods in Brockport in 1999. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and was an avid golfer

   Surviving is his companion, Sandy Wills of Elba; son, Patrick (Cheryl Mcrae) Dickes of Manlius, NY; daughters, Vicki (Mark) McShane of Lacona, NY, Michele (Anthony) Buczek of E. Bethany, NY and Liza (Russ) Peet of LeRoy, NY; brothers, Neal (Sharon) Dickes, Thomas (Sandy) Dickes & Terry (Peggy) Dickes all of Batavia; sister, Lynda Dickes of Chapel Hill, NC; sister-in-law, Frances Dickes of Elba; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

   Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service 2:00 p.m. Monday June 30, 2014 at Springvale Cemetery in Elba where he will be laid to rest. The family suggests memorials in his memory be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

   A gathering will be held at the Elba Rec. Hall following the service.

NICOLE MARIE SHEEHAN - Age 29, of Lancaster, formerly of Batavia, died Friday  June 20, 2014 at UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA. She worked as a primary instructor at People, Inc. in Buffalo and was a former sales associate at Macy's Dept. Store. She was born June 17, 1985 in Batavia, NY to Suzanne (Dunham) Ball of Batavia and Michael Sheehan of TN.

   Nicole was a Batavia High School graduate and attended Genesee Community College and graduated from Geneseo State College with a Special Education degree. Nicole had a love for children, the outdoors, gardening and crafts. She was an avid football fan of the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers. She enjoyed family parties and an excuse to dress up.

   Nicole will be remembered for her infectious smile, selfless attitude and her joy of gift giving. In keeping with Nicole's loving and generous spirit her final gift on this earth was that of being an organ and tissue donor. She shared the Gift of Life with numerous families so their loved ones may live on. In this senseless tragedy Nicole is looking down from heaven and smiling on us all.

   Surviving along with her parents are two brothers, Jeremy (Emily) Sheehan of LeRoy and Ryan Sheehan of TN; two nieces, Holly and Lyric and a nephew, Jeremiah and Suzanne's long time significant other, Michael Shaughnessy; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

   Family and friends may visit from 3-8 p.m. Friday June 27, 2014 at the Michael S. Tomaszewki Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road, New York 14020 where a Celebration of Nicole's Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 28. Memorials in her memory are suggested to any local organ donor program or to the family.

Elizabeth, CO - Joseph P. Strogen, 92, of Elizabeth, CO, and formerly of Batavia, passed away Sunday, (January 19, 2014) at his daughter’s home , in Colorado. 

Mr. Strogen was born March 19, 1921 in Batavia, a son of the late John and Mary (Meterko) Strogen.

Joe served his country honorably during World War II. 

Mr. Strogen was a former employee of Batavia Metal Products and Doehler-Jarvis in Batavia prior to moving to California in 1963.  There he worked into his 70s as a machinist with Lockheed Martin, GSR Sloan Co., and Flo Control.  In his later years he worked to design and maintain machinery for plastic pipe fittings. 

He greatly enjoyed traveling with his wife, baseball, fishing, and hunting.  He was also an avid reader. 

Joeseph was a member of the Moose Lodge in Batavia and Warsaw, the VFW and the American Legion.

He is the husband of the late Elva (Hyde) Strogen who passed away in January 2004.

Surviving are his children, Paul D Strogen of Daly City, CA, James A. (Virginia) Strogen of Sun Rise Beach, MO, and Mylynne (Wayne) Austgen of Elizabeth, CO; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Darin Strogen of MN, Eric Austgen of Elizabeth, CO, Rachel Hurst of Aurora, CO, Susan Austgen of Elizabeth, CO, and Jim Wolford of PA.  12 great-grandchildren also survive.

Joseph is preceded in death by his siblings, Frank, Jean and Helen.

There will be no prior visitation.  Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, (June 28, 2014) at West Bethany Cemetery, Brown Road, Bethany.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021.

Alfonso S. Attardi, 85, of Batavia passed away on Sunday June 22, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born on May 17, 1929 in Batavia to the late Dominick and Vanera (Maio) Attardi. He is preceded in death by his sister Angeline Giordano.

Mr. Attardi was a United States Army Veteran. He  was a former employee at GTE Sylvania and worked for Philips Manufacturing in Knoxville, Tennessee before retiring. Alfonso enjoyed fishing, golfing, the casinos and most importantly his family. He was a member of Ascension Parish, past member of Stafford Country Club and life member of the former St. Nicholas Social Club.

Alfonso is survived by his beloved wife Jeannette F. (Pricola) Attardi, son Dominic (Jill) Attardi of Farmington, daughters Vanessa (Philip) Overfield of Webster; Jamie (Francis) O’Mara of Hilton, grandchildren Michael (Erin); Andrew; Nicole; and Adrienne Overfield, Danielle and Shawn O’Mara, Sophia, Dominick and Angelo Attardi, great-grandchildren Kayla Overfield-Magana and Joseph Schultz survive along with many nieces and nephews.  

There will be no prior calling hours. James J. Baker, age 70, of Perry, died on Saturday June 21, 2014 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.He was born in Buffalo, New York on February 13, 1944 a son of the late Clement and Betty (Strozewski) Baker.

James was a United States Army Veteran.  He retired from New York State Department of Transportation in Warsaw, where he had worked for many years. He was a member of St. Isidore’s Catholic Parish (St. Joseph’s Church) in Perry. He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife Peggy (Gorman) Baker whom he married on June 7, 1969, sons; James (Liana) Baker of Rochester, Michael (Jennifer) Baker of Perry; brothers Gary (Barbara) Baker of Niagara Falls, Kenneth Baker of Lakewood, Ronald (Patricia) Baker of Dothan, AL., Gregory (Andrea) Baker of St. Petersburg, FL., grandchildren; Vanessa, Zachery, Amelia and Addison Baker, along with many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Isidore’s Catholic Parish (St. Joseph’s Church) in Perry on Thursday June 26th at 11:00 A.M.

Batavia - Melvern L. “Mel” Pashong, 87, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, (June 21, 2014) at his home.

Mr. Pashong was born September 15, 1926 in Batavia, a son of the late Walter and Felmer (Hartman) Pashong.

Mel served honorably during WWII and was a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia.  He was also a former member of the American Legion and VFW.

He greatly enjoyed to fish, travel, and spend time at the Pok-A-Dot where he was a mainstay. 

Mr. Pashong will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind, gentle, family man.

He is the husband of Shirley (Kirkpatrick) Pashong.  The two were married in East Pembroke in 1950.

Surviving along with his wife, are his children, Bonnie (Dennis) Dugan and Randy Pashong both of Batavia; grandchildren, Kathrine (Michael) Whitcomb of Fairport, Joshua Pashong and Rachel Pashong both of Batavia; great-grandchidren, Andrew and Zachary Whitcomb of Fairport; a brother, Ronald (June) Pashong of Stafford; a sister, Shirley (late William) Krause of Byron.  Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Mel is preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Pashong.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. ALFONSO C. "AL" VIGNERI - Age 94, retired muck farmer/owner of A&V Produce, of Batavia, died Tuesday afternoon June 17, 2014 at his home. He was born May 26, 1920 in Rochester, NY to the late Patsy & Lucy (Burgio) Vigneri also preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Augello), daughter, Rosanne Vigneri; siblings, Phil Vigneri, Frank (late Irene) Vigneri, Charles ( late Pauline) Augello, Rosie Mattioli, Carmen (late Sam) Palermo and infant sister, Josephine.

   Al and his late brother, Charles were the owner/operators of A&V Produce for many years. He was a longtime member of Resurrection Parish, loved the outdoors, enjoyed golfing with his brother and tending to his garden.

   Surviving is his beloved daughter, Carolyn (Eric) Walton of Batavia; his loving brother and sisters, Patsy (late Marie) Vigneri Jr. of Elba, Pauline (late Joseph) Argento of Elba, Rosalie (late Arthur) Pastore of Batavia, Josephine (Anthony) Deni of Batavia, Caroline Vigneri of Elba and Mary Jane (Nick) Pilla of Ogden; sister-in-law, Alice Vigneri of Batavia along with many nieces and nephews.

   Family and friends may visit from 1-3 & 6-8 p.m. Friday June 20, 2014 at the Michael S. Tomaszewki Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 9:30 a.m. Saturday June 21 followed by his Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph's Site) 303 East Main Street Batavia. Sidney P. Merkle, 77, of Batavia passed away on Wednesday June 18, 2014 at New York State Veterans Home in Batavia.  He was born October 7, 1936 in Attica to the late Elton and Evelyn (Greene) Merkle. Donald is preceded in death by his brother Doug Merkle.  Sidney was a United States Army Veteran and later worked as a Safety Inspector at Mallory Timers.

He is survived by his son Scott (Sandra) Merkle of Batavia, daughter Donna (Richard) Spofford of Rochester, brothers Larry (Marie) Merkle of Gasport; Tom (Alda) Merkle of Hornell; sister Belva (Leon) Miller of Dansville, granddaughter Drea Watson, 2 step granddaughters Mara and Megan Hensel …along with many nieces and nephews.

LeRoy ~ James M. "Pat" McGrath, age 88, of  The Greens of LeRoy, passed away Tuesday morning (June 17, 2014) at Hospeace House in Naples, N.Y.

     Mr. McGrath was born October 20, 1925 in Batavia, a son of the late Evangeline Lamendola and stepfather James Lamendola.

     He was a lifelong LeRoyan, loved and excelled at sports and was a member of the LeRoy Country Club for many years.  He was recently inducted into the LeRoy Sports Hall of Fame. He also worked to support Notre Dame High School in Batavia for many years.  He served his country as a Merchant Marine during World War II.

     Mr. McGrath is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marian Crnkovich McGrath; daughter, Kathleen (Terry Donahue) McGrath-Donahue of Penn Yan; son, Thomas (Michele) McGrath of Williamsville; grandchildren, Melanie (Tyler) Drysdale and Michael (Julie Trifilo) McGrath; step-grandchildren, Heather Donahue-Smith and Ryan Donahue; great-grandchildren, Michael McGrath and Parker Drysdale and step-great-grandchildren, Connor Smith and Hannah Smith.

     Family and friends may call on Friday from 3 ~ 7 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt. 19), LeRoy.  His Rite of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Joseph's Oratory, 25 Lake Street, LeRoy, with interment to follow in St. Francis Cemetery.
