Obituaries

Esther Johnson, 96, of Oakfield was received by her Lord and Savior on December 22, 2022 at United Memorial Medical Center.   Esther was born July 28, 1926 in Alabama, a daughter of the late Raymond and Bertha (Rich) Stokes.  Esther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elba for 59 years.  She taught Sunday School for 54 years, was also, at different times, active on the Missions Board, Social Committee, and Vacation Bible School.  She worked at the C and G Sharp Farms in Oakfield.

Surviving are her son, Brice Johnson of Oakfield; a brother, Raymond (Shirley) Stokes of East Bethany; sisters, Edith Bezon of Byron and Dixie (Charles) Rudolph of Batavia; a sister -in-law, Doris Stokes of East Bethany, close niece Laurie Vogt, and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Johnson; brothers, Robert Stokes and Marvin Stokes; sister, Virginia Kidney; brothers-in-law, Joseph Bezon and Ogan Kidney; a sister-in-law, Viola Stokes, and a close niece Libby (Stokes) Jurs.

Calling hours are Saturday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the First Baptist Church of Elba, 31 South Main Street, Elba, where the funeral will be held at 11:30 am also on Saturday.   She will be laid to rest in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba.

Alabama - Duane Robert Scroger, 82 of Oakfield passed away unexpectedly Christmas Day at his home in Alabama. 

Mr. Scroger was born December 2, 1940 in Batavia, a son of the late Louis and Catherine (Merch) Scroger.

He was a past member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Batavia, past president of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, past Genesee County Fair Manager, past member of the Genesee County Auxiliary Police and Special Deputies, and a past Constable and Zoning Officer for the Town of Alabama. He was a life long truck driver and farmer, co-owning the family dairy farm with his brother, Richard.

Surviving are his wife, Roberta (Osborn) Scroger; children, Kevin (Beth) Scroger, Keith (late Lori) Scroger, Robert (Becky) Scroger, Pam (Jim) Johnson, David (Amy Smith) Scroger, and Peter (Jill) Scroger; a brother, Clifford (Betsy) Scroger; sisters-in-law, Sheila Scroger, Kay Scroger, and Linda (Scroger) and her husband, Jerry Lewandowski. 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

Duane is preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Avery Newton; brothers, Marvin, Richard, and Donald Scroger.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue in Oakfield.  Duane 's Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, (December 30, 2022) at the funeral home. richley_renee_-_photo1.jpgRenee S. Richley, 69 of Darien Center, passed away peacefully on Thursday (December 22, 2022) at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

She was born January 12, 1953 in Corning, NY, a daughter of the late Loren and Ada King Copp.

Renee was raised in Corning, NY where she would spend summers on Keuka Lake and found her love for the outdoors which included watersports, fishing and nature. She was musically talented and that led to her involvement in theater productions, especially the Batavia Rotary shows and as a choreographer.

She was employed as an accounts manager with Cold Spring Construction Co. in Akron, where she worked for over 20 years. Renee was an avid gardener, great cook and a fan of the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills.

She was the heart and spirit of shaping the family. Renee will be greatly missed

Survivors include her husband, Timothy Richley of Darien Center. Daughter, Samara (Justin) Valla of Michigan. Son, Darryl (Ashley) Howe of East Aurora. Step-son, Andrew (Carolyn) Richley of Montenegro. Grandchildren, Myah, Julia, Lara, Aliza, Owen, Joan, Michaela and Analise. Brother, Raymond (Carolyn) Copp of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Stuart, Florida - Peter Maxwell Swartz, 58 passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 25, 2022.

Peter was born Friday, January 17th, 1964, in Batavia, a son of Dr. David M. and Janice Kasmer Swartz of Batavia.

A 1983 graduate of Batavia High School. Peter moved to Florida shortly after and loved it there. He worked as a Stone Mason for many years and started his own business; Creative Stone Design, building waterfalls and water gardens. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed walking the warm beaches looking for shells. He lived life with a big heart and was willing to help anyone in need.  He loved his family dearly and will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Helen Kasmer, John and Gertrude Swartz.

Surviving along with his parents are his brother, David J. Swartz of Batavia; his sister, Susan (David) Swartz-Hinton of Aurora, Ohio and his nephews, David D. (Dr. Hannah Medvid) Hinton, Dr. Andrew J. (Chelsea) Hinton and Spencer D. Swartz.

There are no prior visiting hours. joanfrancis.jpgBatavia, NY - Joan Mary Francis, 70, of Oviedo, FL, formerly of Batavia, NY, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, FL.

Joan was born Sunday, September 14, 1952 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, NY, a daughter of the late George Jr. and Virginia (Klee) Schaefer.

Joan married the love of her life, Fred Francis. She graduated with a Bachelor's in Education from SUNY Geneseo, then worked as a Special Education Teacher at Attica Central School, until dedicating her time to raising five wonderful children and later caring for her mother, Virginia.

Her greatest joy was her family, supporting her children in sports, dance, music, and any endeavor they pursued. Her love for the outdoors was a part of her everyday life. She enjoyed identifying trees, taking trips to National Parks, floating in the pool, and camping trips – especially at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. She always looked forward to days that involved Disney or supporting her favorite football teams, the Bills and the UCF Knights. Joan had pure joy for life and brought cheer to those around her, opening her home and heart to everyone she met. For her, every moment was an opportunity to “play the glad game.”

Joan is survived by her husband, Fred Francis, of Oviedo, Fl; children, Freddie Francis of Locust, NC, Karen (Chris) Jones of Newnan, GA, Eddie Francis of Oviedo, FL, Kristen Francis of Denver, CO, and Kathren (Trey Koons) Francis of Fraser, CO; grandchildren, Ethan, Jacob, and Blakely Jones of Newnan, GA; brother, George (Paula Miller) Schaefer III; and many nieces and nephews.

In death, Joan is reunited with her parents, George Schaefer Jr. and Virginia Ann Schaefer.  

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 10:30AM to 12:30PM at H.E Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, NY. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church at 1 pm. Reception to follow at Leroy Country Club. The family will be wearing blue in honor of Joan’s love for the outdoors and the blue sky. They invite others to do the same in celebration of her bright life.

LeRoy ~ Deanna Lynn Leone, age 74, of Linwood Road, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.

    deanna_lynn_leone_0.jpeg She was born July 29, 1948 in Dansville, NY, a daughter of the late Vincent and Mary Wood Christiano.

     Deanna’s greatest joy, was her family and her greatest job was raising her three daughters.  She loved spending time with her husband of 54 years, Nelson and her grandchildren.  She enjoyed baking Christmas cookies this time of year, gardening, swimming with her grandchildren and could always be found looking up “stuff” and enjoying pictures on her ipad.  She loved going for coffee with her friends and visiting with her Linwood Road neighbors.

Deanna also worked as a teacher’s aide at LeRoy Central School for many years.

     She will be sadly missed by her loving and devoted husband, Nelson; her daughters, Tracey (Mike) Woodard, Kristine (Duane) Spencer and Marcie (Jayson) Drew; her five grandchildren, Michael Woodard Jr., Haylee (Glen) Schubert, Hannah Spencer, Hunter & Jayce Drew; sister, Jackie Moran; sisters-in-law, Margaret (Vincent) Leone and Betty Murray, along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.

     In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her in-laws, Samuel and Mary Leone, sister, Sandra Christiano and brother-in-law, Tom Moran.

     Family and friends may call on Wednesday, December 28 from 1 ~ 3 PM and 5 ~ 7 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., where her Funeral Service will be held at 7:00 PM.  Interment is private in St. Francis Cemetery.

     Contributions in memory of Deanna are suggested to the LeRoy Ambulance Service or the American Heart Association.

Dorothy Rooney, born 8 August 1922 to Myron and Lula Tutchell Russell in LeRoy, NY, died on 22 December 2022 at home in LeRoy.

     Dorothy graduated from LeRoy High School in 1939, attended Albany Teachers College, Rochester Business Institute and Utah State University.  She married Robert Paul Rooney in LeRoy 12 June 1943.

     In 1954 she accompanied her husband and four daughters overseas where they lived for the next eighteen years in Cairo, Egypt; Tripoli, Libya; Kabul, Afghanistan; Lahore, Pakistan; Teheran, Iran and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while Bob worked as Agricultural Engineer for USAID.  She worked as a librarian in the American schools in Lahore and Addis.  Upon Bob’s retirement, they located to Tacoma, Washington, where she pursued her hobbies of family history, gardening, YMCA, reading and volunteered at the Tacoma Family History Center for several years.  In 2003, Bob and she moved to The Greens of LeRoy to be nearer more of their families.

     She is survived by her beloved daughters, Kathleen (Charles) Frazer of Eugene, OR; Leigh (Nigel) Gallaher of Winchester, MA and Joyce Jimmink of Westwood, NJ; son-in-law, Gerald (Linda) Call of Stafford, NY; grandchildren, Erin Call (Jay Frink), Robert (Jeannine) Call, James (Stephanie) Call, Devin (Jun) Jimmink, Christopher (Rachael) Jimmink, Colin (Coryander) Frazer and Courtney (Dan) Costello; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet McHardy of LeRoy and nieces, Linda (Perrin) Gower and Roxanne (Dana) Poray. 

     Her husband, a much loved daughter, Susan Call and sister, Beverly predeceased her.

     At her request, there will be no services.  Please no flowers, but Dorothy requested that any donations be made to Mercy Corps, PO Box 2669, Portland, OR 97208-9652, for humanitarian relief around the world or LeRoy Ambulance Service Inc., PO Box 5, LeRoy, NY 14482.

Geneseo ~ Ronald P. Steiner, age 81, of Gray Road, passed away Tuesday evening (Dec. 13, 2022) at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

   ronald_steiner_0.jpg  He was born February 16, 1941 in Baltimore, MD, a son of the late Leonard and Elsia Schlegel Steiner.

     Ron will be remembered as a very caring, patient and hardworking person, who enjoyed restoring classic cars, antiquing, trips to the Adirondacks and living on Conesus Lake for many years.

     He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife, Diane Clark (Tallo) Steiner; children, Scot (Tiffany) Steiner, Jill Steiner, Jennifer Hillyer, John Protain and special cousin, Kris Brown.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Marsha Steiner and his brother, Leonard Steiner Jr.

     No prior calling hours or services.  Interment will be private in Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

rocky1.jpg  Rocco D. “Rocky” Gringer, 89, of Batavia passed away peacefully on December 22, 2022 at United Memorial Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on December 12, 1933 in Batavia to the late Rocco and Josephine (Divita) Gringer.

In addition to his parents, Rocky is predeceased by his first wife; Nancy (Figlow) Gringer; siblings Tony (Kate) Gringer, Joe (Kate) Gringer, Margaret (Jerry) Condello; Sarah Panepent, Angie (Angelo) Vultura and Mary (Louis) Dispenza; brothers in law Charles Puccio and Patsy Palermo. 

Rocky was a United States Army Veteran. He worked for many years at Delco Products in Rochester. Rocky was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed remodeling old houses. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and would often visit with his siblings’ who he loved so much. Rocky will be remembered as a great husband and mate.

He is survived by his beloved partner; Maria Bucior; his son David Gringer of Batavia; daughter Lisa Ross of East Bethany; siblings Celia Puccio of Batavia, John (Lois) Gringer of Spencerport, Virginia Palermo of Batavia; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Resurrection Parish, 303 East Main St., Batavia, NY. He will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum.

gilbert.jpg  Cindy A Gilbert, 62 passed away peacefully at home on 12/10/2022. She was the daughter of the late Robert K. Boorom and Suzanne R. Boorom.

Cindy graduated from Byron-Bergen High School in 1978. She went on to graduate from Continental School of Beauty where she received her Hairdresser Licensure.  Cindy soon realized her true passion in life was to care for others, she worked almost 20 years at Leroy Village Green as a CNA. She is remembered for her obsession in following her care plans, her need to assure slipper socks were worn, and the call lights in reach of every resident she cared for.

Cindy had the gift of beauty, known for being the “Blonde Bombshell or Bathing Beauty ” while lifeguarding at Godfreys Pond . Her suntan body, natural blonde highlights and striking blue eyes were adored by all. Cindy had an outpouring love for her only child, her son Daniel J. Gilbert. He was her everything, and the love between mother and son was truly amazing. Daniel took on the role of her sole caregiver and assured his Mothers wishes to remain in her home for the remainder of her life. His care and love for his Mother went above and beyond true amazement.  

Cindy is survived by her son Daniel J. Gilbert (Batavia), her Grandsons Dustin and Jordan Morgan-Gilbert (Avon), Although separated for many years she is also survived by her true Love of her life, Daniel Gilbert (Middleport), Her sister Bonnie(Brian) Phillips) Batavia), Neices Breanne (Andrew) Thornton-Harer (Germany) and Keyrsten Wilde (Gulport MS); also survived by her Nephews, Erik Thornton (Batavia) and Austin Oklevitch (Orlando FL), and one cousin Kelly Robinson Christal (Florida).

Per her wishes there will be no calling hours or Services.
