LEONA B. NOGROSKY – Age 99, of Batavia, died peacefully Thursday morning October 31, 2013 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born November 20, 1913 in Rathmel, PA to the late Michel and Catherine (Stanisweski) Maxim also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Nogrosky; brothers, Michael, Stanley, Joseph, John & Raymond Maxim; sisters, Mary Gustimbell and Jule Dickey.

   Mrs. Nogrosky was a longtime member of Resurrection Parish (St. Mary's Site), a Eucharistic minister and volunteer at Bingo. She worked at Massey Harris, Pocketbook Factory, E.N. Rowell Box Factory, Chapin's and retired from GTE Sylvania, where she assisted in organizing the union. Leona volunteered as a driver/companion for senior citizens who were homebound and in her free time enjoyed sewing, reading and embroidery.

   Surviving is a loving daughter, Mary Ann (late Vincent) Spiotta of Batavia and loving son, Don Norse of Florida; 3 grandchildren, Vickie Klein, Samuel (Yvonne) Monachino and Scot Monachino; 2 great-grandchildren, Erin Klein and Maggie Grace Monachino along with several nieces and nephews.

   Family and friends may visit from 3-7 p.m. Sunday November 3, 2013 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 9:00 a.m. Monday November 4 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish (St. Mary's Site). Christopher P. Wierda, 43 of Manchester, NH and formerly of Alabama, NY, died unexpectedly on Saturday (October 19, 2013) at his residence.

He was born April 9, 1970 in Buffalo, NY, a son of James and Susan Schlenker Wierda of Batavia.

Christopher was employed as a computer programmer for Wapac Labs in Manchester, NH.  He was a graduate of Oakfield-Alabama High School, where he excelled and enjoyed participating on the track team.  Christopher was a U.S. Army Veteran and served his country during Operation Desert Storm. He enjoyed photography, camping in the Adirondacks and was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature.  He was also very fond of computer technology and artistry.

Surviving besides his parents is a son, Dimitri Wierda. Step-son, Daniil Petlvannay and their mother, Oksana Wierda, all of Williamsville. Brother, Derk Wierda of Batavia. Sisters, Lindsay Wierda and Jessica (Thomas) Lewandowski, all of Batavia.  Maternal grandmother, Alice Schlenker of Tonawanda. Aunt, Mari Schlenker of Tonawanda.  Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather to share memories, condolences and thoughts on Saturday, November 2^nd, from 10am-12pm at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia.  A funeral service with full military honors will commence in the funeral home at the conclusion of visitation at 12pm.

LeRoy ~ Duffy S. Falcone, age 86, of Platt Avenue, passed away Sunday evening (Oct. 27, 2013) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

     Mr. Falcone was born February 13, 1927 in LeRoy, a son of the late James and Josephine Teresi Falcone.

     He was a retired maintenance supervisor of the LeRoy Post Office and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.  In his earlier years, he was also the manager of the Red Osier Restaurant and the LeRoy Country Club.

     He is survived by his daughters, Joanne Sallah of Jacksonville, FL and Gloria (Joseph) Avino of Batavia, sisters-in-law, Joanne Falcone of LeRoy and Ann Dillon of Fowlerville, daughter-in-law, Rebel Falcone of NC, 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends. 

     Duffy was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Thelma, his son, William, and his siblings, Ralph Falcone, Carrie Sandroni, Christina Zalacca, Josephine Falcone, Philip Falcone, Joseph Falcone and Salvatore Falcone.

FAITH T. CRAWFORD – Age 79, of Corfu died Saturday October 26, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born June 21, 1934 in Buffalo, NY to the late Earl & Elizabeth (Marshall) Switzer also preceded in death by her brother, Marshall Switzer.

   Mrs. Crawford was a co-owner for many years of the True Value in Corfu.

   Surviving is her loving husband of 59 years, Clarence Crawford of Corfu; sons, Gregory (Charlotte) Crawford of Darien, Lester Crawford of Corfu and William (Pamela) Crawford of Sardinia; sisters, Dolores Shimo of Amherst and Mary Elizabeth (David) Weil of Angola; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Of Stafford, NY passed away October 26, 2013 at age 62; beloved wife of Edward Murnan and the late Michael Murray; dear mother of Patrick (Colleen) Murray; cherished daughter of Catherine Hartley and the late Harry Hartley; stepmother of Andrew (Liz) Murnan, Judy (Keith) Zullig and Major (Sel) Matthew (Agneta) Murnan; loving sister to Nanette Hartley (Arthur Hilson), William  (late Jennifer) Hartley, Barbara (Daniel) McDermott and Douglas Hartley (Kristy Long); devoted grandmother to Maddy Kate, Paddy and R. J. Murray and to Ethan and Joshua Murnan and to Ben Zullig; also survived by many nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends.

Jane was born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 20, 1951.  She was a long time member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in LeRoy, NY.  She was employed by First Choice Travel in Batavia.  Jane was an avid gardener and loved flowers, music and reading.  Her home was always open to family and friends.  Her kindness, her devotion to family, her sense of humor and her love will be our treasured memories forever.

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 30^, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the H. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Batavia – Freeman Edgar Edgerton, 86, of Sunset Terrace passed away peacefully in his sleep at home early Saturday morning (Oct. 26, 2013). Mr. Edgerton was born May 6^th, 1927 in Batavia, a son of the late Clayton and Mabel (Millis) Edgerton, and a grandson of former Genesee County Sheriff Freeman, and Susan (Phelps) Edgerton. As a boy Freeman worked on various family farms in Elba and Barre. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1944. While attending BHS he completed the requirements for New York State Certification as an industrial machinist, in addition to earning his educational diploma. He then obtained an Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering from Erie Community College.

            Freeman turned seventeen in May of 1944, graduated from High School in June, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy as a Ship’s Cook Third Class and a Master Gunner, where he received a Bronze Medal while serving aboard the U. S. S. Tyrrell. He was also awarded an American Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal Star, and the Victory Medal.

            After completing service in the Navy, Freeman enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a Corporal in Company B 716^th Military Police Battalion. He later served as a Master Drill instructor preparing recruits for the Korean War Conflict. While stationed with the Military Police in Hyannis, Massachusetts he met and fell in love with his future bride Dorothy Landon of New Jersey.  Freeman was a lifelong employee of R. E. Chapin Manufacturing in Batavia, NY. Like his father Clayton he was a gifted tool and die engineer.

            For many years, he served as the Supervisor of the Tool Room and was instrumental in the development and maintenance of industrial equipment and machines relating to the production of industrial sprayers. In 1954, Freeman was involved in a major explosion that destroyed a significant portion of R. E. Chapin. He miraculously survived and continued to work there until his retirement in 1989. Freeman was also well known within Genesee County for his exceptional ability in building Open Wheel Sprint Cars and high performance racing engines. Freeman was extremely involved in the sport of Go-Kart racing at the local and national levels, where he captured many championships as a racer in various classes.

            During his lifetime, Freeman was a member of the Batavia Masonic Temple, the Batavia Moose Lodge, Limerock Speedway, and the local C. B. Club. He is predeceased by infant son Thomas Clayton Edgerton, and survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years Dorothy D. Edgerton, two sisters Marilyn Beechler of Batavia and Susan Carlson of Delaware, his children Linda (Ken) Butler-Weddington of Indiana, Janet Edgerton of Batavia, and Timothy (Lettie) Edgerton of Oakfield, ten grandchildren, Frank Jarkiewicz, Tammy Siford, Jennifer Huff, Shelley Tallon, Thomas Horton, Erin Verratti, Afton and Ashleigh Butler, Kasey and Emily Edgerton, and 16 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

            Freeman was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who also adored his two canine companions Missy and Bella. Family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the H. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home in Batavia. His service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at H.E. Turner & Co. and internment with military honors will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba. TERESA W. GIESLER, LPN – Age 61, of Batavia, died Friday afternoon October 25, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was born April 10, 1952, in Batavia, NY, to Jacqueline  (Wilkes) Campo of Batavia and the late Wayland E. Cotter.

   Teresa was employed as a unit coordinator at the Harris Hill Nursing Facility, a dedicated nurse, who on more than one occasion received "Nurse of the Year" awards. She had a passion for horses, enjoyed quilting and reading, most important was the love for her children and grandchildren

   Surviving along with her mother is her husband of 32 years, Mark Giesler of Batavia; loving daughters, Amy (Tony) Ilacqua of Oakfield, Jessica (Philip) Farley of Syracuse; sons, Chad (Jennifer) Giesler of Batavia and Matthew (Amanda) Giesler of Stafford; sisters, Joann (Phil) O'Geen of LeRoy, Deborah Smith of Batavia and Cathryn (Patrick) McCay of PA; eight grandchildren, James, Anthony, Victoria, Jordan, Madison, Alexander, Brenna and Lauren along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Batavia - Mrs. Virginia Louise Bray, 88, was received by her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, October 26, 2013.

Mrs. Bray was born June 24, 1925 in Burlington, Vermont, the daughter of the late Walter and Mamie  Johnson Opdyke. 

A member of the Calvary Baptist Church for many years, she formerly was employed at UMMC and the Batavia Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late James W. Bray, mother of the late Paul Bray, mother-in-law of the late Antoinette Bray and great grandmother of the late Christopher Malo.

Survivors include one son, James (Ann Marie Wood) Bray of Batavia; two daughters, Elizabeth (Larry) Burlew and Verna Bray, both of Rochester; one brother, Robert Opdyke of Virginia; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many dear and precious friends.

LeRoy ~ Richard A. Vogel, age 72, of Craigie Street, passed away at home early Friday morning (Oct. 25, 2013) in the presence of his loving family.

     Mr. Vogel was born April 7, 1941 in Rochester, a son of the late George and Genevieve LaBar Vogel.

     He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retiree of Case-Hoyt after 36 years of service.  Richard loved to travel and attend air shows.  He loved his family and feline companions, Snow, Midnight, Barney, Fred and Dumb Dumb.  Richard also enjoyed eating at his favorite restaurant, Settlers in Batavia, where he loved their fish, clam chowder and prime rib.  He wanted to thank them for several years of good food.

     He is survived by his loving wife, Lorritta M. Vogel, his children, Alan Vogel of AZ, Michael  Vogel of AZ, Samantha Vogel of AZ, Daniel Vogel of LeRoy and Bethany Vogel of Liverpool, his brothers, Norman (Phyllis) Vogel of CA, Edward (Barbara) Vogel of Rochester and John Vogel of Rochester, his sister, Theresa (Gary) Perkins of FL/Rochester, 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, along with many nieces and nephews.

Twila Sara Whalen, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2013 in Elk Grove, California.  She was 97 years old. Twila was born in in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on November 5, 1915 to Margaret "Effie" (Clowes) and John Christian Wagener. A talented artist, Twila attended Buffalo State University and graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Art degree in Art Education and began her career as a high school art teacher. She married William Whalen in 1946 and moved to Attica New York where they raised their two daughters, Margaret and Maureen.  She was an art teacher at Alexander High School for 22 years and in 1976 she retired after a total of 27 years of teaching. Twila was a dedicated Christian and active member in her church, the New Life Fellowship in Attica, New York.  She enjoyed hosting weekly Bible Study groups and spending much of her efforts for God.  She loved to draw and paint and she showed her appreciation of natures beauty in her artwork.

Twila is survived by her brother, Phillip Wagener, her nephew, Robert Wagener, her daughter, Margaret (Whalen) LaPlaunt and her husband, Greg, her granddaughter Erin (LaPlaunt) Hohl, grandson Gregory LaPlaunt and Great- Grandson, Tommy Hohl.

There will be no prior calling hours and Funeral Services will be held privately. She will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Attica.

Age 72, of Lancaster, died peacefully Wednesday evening October 23, 2013 at Buffalo General Hospital with his family at his side. He was born January 15, 1941 in Bergen, NY to the late Morris and Monica (Lynch) Cunningham also preceded in death by his brother, John and sister, Ann Murphy.

   Robert was an Army Veteran and then served many years with the USAFR at the Niagara Falls Air Base, retiring in 2001 as a Tech. Sergeant. He had an extensive career in public service, having been a City of Batavia Fireman, served with the LeRoy Police Department and retired as a Senior Officer with the East Aurora Police Department. As he retired, Bob developed a passion for golf, enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture.

   Surviving is his beloved wife of 43 years, Linda (Mickey) Cunningham of Lancaster; sons, Daniel of Bloomfield, Michael (Joanne) of FL, Steven (Julie) of Bergen; daughter, Charlene (Mark) Baylor of Holley; brother, George (Marjorie) Cunningham; sister-in-law, Norma Cunningham all of Bergen; 7 grandchildren, Joshua, Robert, Sean, Seth, Ainsley, Eagan & Venus; 3 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jackson & Emily; brothers and sisters-in-law, Susan Mickey of Batavia, Carol (Angelo) Gifaldi of Holley, Joseph Mickey of Elba, Nancy Mickey of Batavia, Gary (Tina) Mickey of Brockport and Sharon (Steve) Lauzze of Corfu along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Freda Little, 91 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday October 23, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born March 9, 1922 in Robinson, PA to the late Harry (Minnie Mae Henderson) Johns. Mrs. Little was retired from the Daily News and she previously worked at Cooperative Extension. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed canning and candy making. Her greatest joy was taking care of her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband David Little Jr. in 1984, great-grandson Justin Jacobs, son-in-law Norman Wawrzyniak, brothers Ralph, Paul, Art, Tom Johns, and sister Laurabelle Mack.

Freda is survived by her sons David (Zoraida) Little III of Batavia, Paul (Linda) Little of Elba, daughters Mary Graham, Winifred Wawrzyniak, Betty (John) Worthington and Patty Little all of Batavia. 13 Grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren,      8 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mary A. Jacobs, 83 of Batavia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday October 21, 2013 at the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center in Rochester. She was born December 21, 1929 in Batavia to the late Salvatore (Phyllis LaLoggia) Maniace. Mary was a longtime member of St. Anthony’s church and the Notre Dame Prayer Group. She worked for 27 years at GTE Sylvania and then at Kodak for 7 years. Mary was a very giving and charitable person that donated to many charities including the Boys Club of America, Catholic Charities, UNICEF, and the American Cancer Society. She loved cooking, cleaning, gardening, planting flowers, and holidays especially Christmas. Mary will be remembered as a peacemaker, very loving wife, mother, grandmother. Her love of family, strong faith in the Lord and generosity will be missed by those who knew her. She is preceded in death by brothers, John, Charles, Sam Jr., Dominic, Franklin "Ace" Maniace; sisters, Josephine DeFazio and Frances Mandelar.
