Adeline S. Raykowski, 88, of Akron, died peacefully on Monday (January 28, 2013) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. 

She was born in Lancaster, NY on April 17, 1924, daughter of the late Walter and Mary Ciesla Dylag.

She was a former waitress at the Park Country Club, working along with two of her sisters until her retirement. Adeline enjoyed crocheting and gardening around her home, where she was known for her beautiful red roses.  She was also a parishioner of St. Teresa’s Church in Akron.

She was the wife of the late Henry A. Raykowski who died in 1996 and mother of the late Michael Raykowski who died in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Richard Raykowski of Akron.  Sister, Stella (late Julian) Balicki of Lackawanna. Brother, Henry (Hilda) Dylag of Corfu.  Four grandchildren, Heather Lee, Marissa Raykowski and Brittany (Chris Hockenberry) Raykowski. Two great-grandhcildren, Connor and Aubreyanna.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Adeline was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Liverpool/Batavia - Lorraine W. Didget, 91, of Liverpool, formerly of Batavia, passed away Saturday, (January 26, 2013) at home, in Liverpool.

Mrs. Didget was born August 24, 1921 in Bennington, a daughter of the late William and Sophia (Herbst) Wendler.

She was a graduate of Attica High School and Chown’s Business School in Buffalo.  Mrs. Didget retired after 15 years as Confidential Secretary for the Genesee County District Attorney and served 8 of the 15 years as Grand Jury Stenographer.  Before her marriage she was the Secretary to the District Director of the New York State Health Department, Batavia Office for several years. 

She was a member of the Ingraham Class of the church, United Methodist Women; member and former secretary of the Genesee Genealogical Society of Batavia; very active for many years in the 1st United Methodist Church, Miriam Circle; Genesee Memorial Hospital League and was a former member of the Genesee Zonta Club.

She is the wife of the late Richard D. Didget, who died May 6, 2010.

Lorraine is survived by her daughters, Cheryl A. (Mark) McLaughlin of Gainesville, FL and Laurel B. Didget of Liverpool; a grandson, Nathan McLaughlin; her nieces, Joan Wood, Margaret Meisner, Janet Meinweiser; nephews, William and Harold Meisner.  Several great-nieces and nephews also survive.

She is the sister of the late Bernice Meisner and Clifford Wendler.

Dora E. Shanks, 94 of Batavia, died January 24, 2013 at The Villages of Orleans in Albion. She was born April 19, 1918 in New York, NY to the late Harry (Ada Westcott) Connell. She was a long time legal secretary for the law firm of Dewey, Ballentine, Bushby and Smith. She was Secretary to the former Govenor Dewey of New York. She also volunteered at the CYO on Staten Island New York and was a volunteer at the Community Services Offices on Staten Island. She is preceded in death by her husband Edwin Shanks.

She is survived by her son Andrew Mistler, her grandsons Andrew, Michael and Kenneth Mistler, her great grandchildren Caleigh, Andrew, and Kaitlyn Mistler and her best friend and loving daughter-in-law, Joanne Mistler.

There will be no prior calling hours. Funeral Services will be held privately.

Batavia - Mr. John H. Fee, 85, of Batavia, salesman for Kraft Foods in Rochester for 35 years, passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Fee was born November 18, 1927 in Buffalo, a son of the late Frank and Ruth Beecher Fee.

A member of St. Joseph's Church, Mr. Fee was a former member of the Batavia Lions Club and St. Nicholas Club, member of VFW Post No. 1602, the American Legion Post No. 332, Polish Falcons Nest No. 492 and the Moose Club in East Mesa, Arizona where he and his wife wintered for many years. He served with the United States Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia L. Scott Fee; three sons, Michael (Delores) Fee and David (Pam) Fee of Greece and Gregory Fee of Mesa, Arizona;  two daughters, Kathy Smith of California and Colleen (Bill) Wassink of Batavia; two brothers, Thomas (Doris) Fee of Portland, Maine and David (Mary) Fee of LeRoy; a sister, Betty (Gilbert) Warner of Florida; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is the brother of the late Patricia Yasses, Sandra Costanza and Geraldine Chamberlain.

Age 55, of Batavia, died on Thursday November 22, 2012 after a lengthy battle with various illnesses. He was born February 3, 1957 in Batavia, a son of the late Clark and Hilda (Wallman) Baube.     

     Bruce was retired from the US Gypsum Co. after 25 years of service. Despite his illnesses, he fought like a champ every step of the way and never let his disabilities keep him down, a true inspiration to everyone he met. After his retirement from USG, Bruce followed his love of dogs and assisted in the rescue of hundreds of them from the South, his story was featured in the Batavia Daily News. He would walk his dog faithfully and along the way met a great friend who joined them on their outings. He also returned to the LVG, where he had been for rehab, after a 22 month stay in the hospital to play cards with “the ladies” weekly over the next four years. He was an avid fan of drag racing, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Bills and Sabres. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, which lead him to a life membership at Godfrey’s Pond. He will be remembered as a humble man, never wanting to accept the credit he deserved and for making the most of everything he had accomplished.

     Surviving is a brother, Dale of the Philippines; his dear friend and caregiver for many years, Carrie Blaszak of Elba along with several nieces and cousins.

Dorothy was born in Worcester, MA to Edgar Herbert Corttis and Florence “Edith” Brown Corttis and spent her childhood on the family “farm” in North Grosvenordale, CT. She attended Tourtellotte High School and graduated from Syracuse University in December 1945. She obtained a Masters in Education from the University of Vermont and highly valued education.

Dorothy began her teaching career at the age of 20 and was a beloved math teacher, most recently at Wyoming Central School from 1959 to 1986 where she taught math classes from 7th grade to 12th grade. She was very involved in school activities, acting as class advisor for many senior class trips to Florida and Washington, DC. Dorothy was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Unit, the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists, the Early American Witches’ Society, the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a 50 year member of the Grange. She was also active in Beta Gamma teacher’s association, Alpha Delta Gamma Educational Foundation and the New York State Retired Teachers’ Association, as well as the NAHDS genealogy society. She was a member of the Brick Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and was a Presbyterian enabler.
She married her sweetheart, W. Kenneth Cox, on November 10. 1958. Mr. Cox preceded her in death (1988) along with sisters Elizabeth, Christine, Lucy, Alice, Ruth; brothers Herbert, Harold and two infant brothers. The family thanks her caregiver, Lisa Tallman, for her loving care of Dorothy.

She is survived by her daughters, Janice Palumbos (Alan) of Salt Lake City, UT and Debbie Blanc (Brett Pendergast) of Fairport, NY and Brazilian daughter, Lilian Hashimoto Okada and a son, Steven (Connie) Pullen of Batavia, NY. 4 step-daughters, Mary Law, Sally Johnston, Renie Gorsuch and Judy Conn, 10 grandchildren Mackenzie (Daniel) McKendrick, Zachary, Sierra and Andrew Palumbos; Adam and Morgan Blanc; Sandra (Terry) Rawleigh, James, William and Lucy Pullen. 2 great-grandchildren, Madelynn and Alexander Rawleigh, along with several nieces and nephews.

Lillian was born in Andover, New York on June 29,1912 a daughter of the late William and Rose Sweeney Livingston. Lillian was a resident of the Silver Lake area for over 70 years. During WWII Lillian helped her husband run the Ice business. She drove when women didn’t, but not a car, a large truck. She worked for the former Perry Knitting Mill and Champion Products as a seamstress until her retirement in 1982. Being a skilled seamstress was elected to sew the special garments for the NFL. She was a member of St. Isidore’s Catholic Parish (St. Joseph’s Church) and the former Perry Moose Club. She loved music, dancing, singing, knitting, crafts, traveling, and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her husband Matthew Bernard who died in 1957; 3 sisters Viola Bernard, Emma Masone, Ruth Tata; 3 brothers William Livingston, Earl Sheldon and Rodney Rowe.

She is survived by her children; Audrey (Richard) Brown of Perry, Arnold (Jean) Bernard of York, Pamela Yurko of Cheektowaga, and Bernadette Halstead of Perry. 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Byron – Lois A. Boorom, 86, of Byron, passed away Monday, (January 21, 2013) at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, in Myrtle Beach, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Boorom was born March 7, 1926 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Clyde and Ruth E. (Stone) Ray.

She was a kindergarten teacher at Byron – Bergen School for many years, having retired in 1984.  Lois was a longtime member of the Byron Presbyterian Church, and loved arts and crafts.  She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren; and never missed one of their sporting events.  She and her husband took pleasure in wintering in Myrtle Beach, having done so for at least 30 years.

Lois is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, James A. Boorom, her children, Michael Boorom of Batavia, Denise Boorom of Rochester, and Susan (Frank) Chittenden of Corfu; grandchildren, Zachary, Cody and Wyatt Chittenden, all of Corfu, Madison and Emily Boorom, both of Rochester; her sister Joyce (Frank) Lund of Batavia.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Batavia - Mrs. Nolia Camerera, 94, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Genesee County Nursing Home..

Mrs. Camerera was born October 29, 1918 in Hessner, Louisiana, the daughter of the late Lionel L. and Eugenia   Chatelain.

 Her husband, the late Morris Camerera, died in 1984.

Survivors include one son: Ivan (Linda) J. Camerera of Myrtle Beach. SC;  one sister, Montez Ducote of Louisiana and 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and  1 great great grandchild.

 Josephine C. Kean, 91, of Basom, died peacefully on Friday (January 18, 2013) at her residence.

She was born in Marshall, NC on December 9, 1921, a daughter of the late Jack and Minnie Caldwell.

She was one of fifteen children and spent her childhood in North Carolina. Josephine was employed by General Motors Axel Co. in Buffalo prior to her retirement.  She loved to cook and bake and was well known for her “Sweet Buns”.  Josephine also loved gardening, crocheting and ceramics.  Most of all she will be known to her family as a caring and loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by a daughter, Deborah E. Conway of Batavia. Son, Christopher C. Kean of Basom.  Grandchildren, Sean (Jess) Conway, Tanya (Tony) Mech, Stacy (Jeff) Rankin and Christopher Conway.  Great-grandhcildren Jonathan, Edan, Ayla, Alyssa and Alex.  Sisters, Victoria Caldwell of North Carolina and Jeanette Swift of Michigan.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Adolph A. Mruczek, 84, of Batavia, died Friday (January 18, 2013) at his residence.

He was born in Batavia on June 9, 1928 a son of the late Andrej and Karolina Twardowska Mruczek.  His wife Stephanie Dudek died in 1997.

Mr. Mruczek was a professional home builder all his life and constructed over 100 custom homes in the Genesee County area.  He was a life member of Ascension Parish in Batavia where he served as an alter boy and usher in his later years.  He was also a member of the Holy Name Society and Polish Falcons of America, Nest 492.  In his younger years, he was fondly known by his friends as “Polka” but by his parents and siblings he was affectionately known as “Dollie”.

Surviving are his children: Susan (Peter) Hoy, Frederick (Mary Ann) Mruczek, Thomas (Barbara) Mruczek and Gregory (Maria) Mruczek all of Batavia.  Eleven grandchildren: Eric, Stephanie, Alexandra “Sasha”, Brittany, Casimir, Leah, Gregory Jr. and Andrew Mruczek, Noah, Zachary and Stephanie Hoy.  Brother and sister in law, Alexander and Caroline Mruczek of Belin, NM.  Sisters in law, Mildred Mruczek of Corfu and Carol Mruczek of Batavia.  Many nieces and nephews also survive.  He was the brother of the late: Blanch Mruczek, Caroline Hyback, Helen Konieczny, Chester, Edward, Walter, Albene and Stephan Mruczek.

 Age 84, of Batavia, retired President of the former Beardsley’s Clothing Store, died peacefully Saturday morning January 19, 2013 at the Martin-Linsin Residence @ Hospice of Orleans. He was born April 22, 1928 in Batavia, a son, of the late Eldoune A. & Elsie (Ruoff) Thornton Sr., also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Janet (Moore) Thornton in 2005, and a sister, Marilyn Thornton Dilcher in 2003.

     Mr. Thornton was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, attended Syracuse University and Bryant & Stratton College. In 1950 he entered the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged a Master Sergeant in 1952. Al started as a salesman at E. J. Beardsley Co. clothing store in 1947, then with two associates purchased the business in 1964 and was the first retail store to rebuild on Main Street in 1967, during the Court Street Urban Renewal Project. He was later joined in the business by his two sons, Dwight & Timothy; they expanded into women’s clothing and a sports department, known as Beardsley’s Fan Stand. Al’s wife also operated a craft department in the store until 1997. He was long active in the Batavia community, an honorary member and past president of the Batavia Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary’s highest honors. He was instrumental in forming a committee to operate the concession stand for the Rotary Club at Dwyer Stadium, co-chairing the project for twenty five years. A past president of the Batavia Junior Chamber of Commerce, served as secretary/treasurer of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, past president of the former Genesee Memorial Hospital Board, past president of the Children’s Home Association, was one of the founders of Batavia Youth Football and served as secretary/treasurer for many years, served on the City of Batavia Water & Sewer Board, Urban Renewal Agency and former treasurer of the Hawley Assembly Committee for former New York State Assemblyman R. Stephen Hawley. A former member of the Batavia Club, former Moose Club and Elks Lodge, member of the American Legion Post #332, a fifty year member of the First Presbyterian Church, former Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session and President of the 20-30 Club. An avid baseball fan, he enjoyed woodworking, rebuilding player pianos, a selfless man who was always giving to his family and back to the community.

     Surviving are loving sons, Dwight (Tina) Thornton and Timothy (Margaret) Thornton both of Batavia; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Arland B. Rees, 90 of Batavia, passed away on January 19, 2013 at Buffalo General Hospital. He was born November 13, 1922 in Houghton to the late David A. (Mabel Benton) Rees. On August 26, 1944 he married Louise (Wales) Rees in Rome, NY. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy & Houghton College, attended Syracuse University and received his Doctorate from Buffalo State College. He was Assistant Principle/Guidance Counselor at Corning Free Academy, Professor of History at Houghton College, served several Churches in the Wesleyan Methodist and United Methodist denominations. Arland served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy during WWII.  

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Louise R. (Wales) Rees of Batavia; son John (Kimberly) Rees of Batavia; daughter Carol (Paul) Ensell of Belmont, NY; grandchildren David and Kelli Rees; Tomas and Cara Ensell; Michelle White.

Age 72, of Batavia, died peacefully Wednesday morning January 16, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was born March 1, 1940 in Alleghany, NY a daughter of the late Joseph E. & Letha (Tyler) Karl, also prceded in death by her husband, Walter F. Owens and a sister, Judith Karl.

Mrs. Owens was an active, faithful member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish and the Legion of Mary. She was an avid Sabres' fan, and will be remembered for her beautiful smile and devotion to her family.

Surviving are her beloved daughters, Mary Beth (James) Demmer, Donna (Nelson) Weibel and Janet Owens all of Batavia; brother, Phillip J. (Cherie) Karl of Washington State; 5 grandchildren, James, Thomas (Amanda Ambrose), Peter, Benjamin Demmer and Cassandra Swanson all of Batavia along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Age 60, of Batavia, died Monday afternoon January 14, 2013 at his home. He was born August 22, 1952 in Erie, PA a son of the late Leon J. & Noreen (McConnell) Stone-Keenan.

Michael was retired from the Batavia VA Medical Center. He was a United States Navy Veteran and a former member of the Army National Gaurd. He was a history buff, especially military history and was an avid Star Trek fan.

Surviving are his loving sons, Mr. & Mrs. Adam Stone, Andrew (Melody) Stone and Abram Stone all of Batavia; former wife, Debra Langford of Stafford; brothers, Martin (Sandra) Stone of North Carolina, Mitchell Stone & John Keenan; his step-father, Raymond Keenan all of Brockport; 4 grandchildren along with sevral nieces and nephews.
