KEVIN LAWRENCE BERL, age 57, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, in his home in LeRoy on April 28th 2012.

He was born May 21st 1954, in Rochester, NY of the late Lawrence H. Berl & Dolores (Siplo) Berl of Penfield. He was a loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather.  He was a 1972 Penfield High Graduate who would have attended his 40th high school reunion this Year.  He worked a full time job as a machinist for more than 30 years. Many people knew him as having a part time passion for being a DJ.  He had a loving passion for God and his Family which was evident in his daily life.   He will be remembered by many as “that tall guy with the cowboy hat” he had an answer for everything and anything for many people, and could hold a conversation for hours with anyone as long as you gave him the time! Gadgets and gizmos and computers were of plenty for this man, and always willing to help a fellow man in need.  God has truly opened the heavens to receive an amazing spirit that his family and friends will forever remember.

He is survived by his loving wife Gloria Berl (LeRoy) who he married on August 20th 2004 and sons Kendric & (Cortney) Berl (LeRoy) Jason (Vanessa) Berl (Webster) Geoffrey &( Joeylyn) Berl (LeRoy) & Daughter Stephanie Sumeriski Berl (Batavia). Step-daughters Tiffany & (Ryan) Appleton (Long Island, NY) & Cori Majors (Batavia). And 14 grandchildren Dylan, Brooke, Kristopher ,Kaleb, Jaden, Calleigh, Mikah, Micheal, Collin, Jacob, Olivia, Morgan, Elizabeth, and Amber.

Kathleen L. Alianell, age 83, entered into rest April 27, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born September 27, 1928, the daughter of the late Genaro and Lula (Paine) Fasano.   Kay and her late husband, Charles J. Alianell, owned and operated Kay’s Floral and Gift Shop in Batavia for nearly 50 years.  Survivors include her loving children, Dr. Gary (Michele) Alianell of CA, Charlene (Robert) Frye of Rochester, and LaDonna (Michael) Della Gala of CA; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alecia Alianell, Charles J. (Christine Hsieh) Frye, Margaret K. (Caswell) Smith, Daniele, Gina, Maria, and Michael Della Gala; great-grandchildren, Lorenzo Charles and Sabrina Valentina Smith;  also survived by her brother Anthony (Shirley) Fasano, sisters-in-law Win (the late Patrick) Fasano, Mary (the late Angelo) Fasano,  Joan (the late James) Fasano, Harriet (the late Genaro Fasano),  many nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death by sisters Lorraine (the late Jack) Nowatka, Deanne (the late John) Muscarella, Marcelene (the late William) Drage. 

Kathleen’s life was all about love for family and friends and helping others in their time of need.  She was a gifted floral designer who believed in the joy and happiness which flowers bring.  Her courage and perseverance through life’s challenges were an inspiration to all who knew her.  Kathleen was kind and generous and her simple gifts touched so many.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, from 3 – 7 pm at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main St. Batavia, New York.  Prayers will be recited on Wednesday at the funeral home at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia, at 9:30 am.  Memorials are suggested to the Robert P. LeRoy ~ Age 23, of Lake Street, passed away after a brief illness Wednesday evening (April 25, 2012) at Strong Memorial Hospital, with his loving family at his side.

     Matt was born October 22, 1988 in Brockport, a son of Daniel & Nancy Stanton Smith.

     He will be remembered as an all-around sportsman, who was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a craftsman, who enjoyed doing handiwork of all kinds. He recently has a passion for playing the guitar, and a sincere passion for the Miami Dolphins.

     In addition to his mom & dad, Matt is survived by his precious daughter, Peyton Marie Smith; fiance, Melissa Gray, sister, Jamie (David Heurtas) Kremer, brother Daniel Platt, paternal grandmother, Mary Smith of LeRoy, Uncle Tim (Aunt Barbara) Smith, special cousin, Shawna Smith, Aunt Deborah (John) Loreant; maternal granparents, Clayton and Nancy Gill of Pavilion; Uncle Bob (Aunt Sheila), Aunt Penny (Uncle John), Uncle George (Aunt Holly), Uncle Joe (Aunt Crystal) and Aunt Pam; along with many other cousins, a niece, a nephew and dear friends. Matt was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Lloyd Smith, cousin, Doug Wandtke and nephew, Christian Kremer.

Charles F. "Phred" Wenke, age 63, of Perry, died on Friday April 27, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness. He was born in Olean, NY on January 26, 1949 a son of the late Charles F. and Martha(Gofran)Wenke II. He served with the US Navy and graduated from University of Buffalo School of Pharmacy. He was the pharmacist at Rite Aid in LeRoy up until his illness in March. He had worked for Rite Aid in Dansville and Walmart in Geneseo. Phred was a member of the Triple Creek Golf Club in Nunda. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He is preceded in death by a brother Geoff Wenke and sister Nicole Rickard.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years Roxann Dobmeier Wenke whom he married in August of 1982,a son: Evan Wenke of Perry,a daughter: Kourtney Wenke of Rochester, a step-daughter: Shannon Kestler of Attica, 3 grandchildren: Jacob Work, Gavin Harkins, and Bradley Wenke, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Age 81, of Batavia, died peacefully Tuesday evening April 24, 2012 at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with his family by his side. The youngest of nine children, Ed was born August 10, 1930 in Batavia, son of the late Thomas & Margaret (Francis) Moynihan, also preceded in death by three infant children Patrick, Edward & Mary; sisters Mary Preston, Judy Gear, Marcy Moynihan and Marguerite Conlon and brothers Thomas & John Moynihan.

Ed was a 1948 graduate of Batavia High School, where he served as President of his class, moving on to Notre Dame University before being drafted into the Marines two years later. He worked fro Sylvania for over 25 years as the Purchasing Manager, Sykes DataTronic and finally at Pepsi from where he retired at age 62. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, the VFW Post #1602 and the former St. Nicholas Social Club. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality, great sense of humor and just being an all around people person. Ed was a frequent visitor to the Pok-A-Dot and Wal-Mart for morning coffee, Wolfley's Barn to play cards or Batavia Country Club for a quick round of golf. A devoted husband and "Sweet Daddy" to his Elizabeth, he adored his grandchildren, even when they caught him cheating at Scrabble & Jeopardy.

He is survived by his beloved wife whom he married on November 12, 1955, Dorothy (Buckenmeyer) Moynihan of Batavia; daughter Elzabeth (Russell) Brinkman of Alexander; sisters Frances Driscoll of Batavia and Agnes (Ralph) Houseknecht of Stafford; grandson Russell Edward and Granddaughter Chelsey Patricia along with many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

Adeline M. Duell, age 82 of Perry, died on Tuesday April 24, 2012 at the Eastside Nursing Home in Warsaw where she had been residing. She was born in Hornell NY on June 10, 1929 a daughter of the late John F. and Delilia (Edwards) Muchler. She was a member of the Brick Presbyterian Church in Perry. Adeline was a collector of knick knacks, she enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, baking, flowers, the comfort of her home and especially enjoyed the company of her family. Adeline is preceded in death by her husband James A. Duell Sr. who died in 1981; brother John F. Muchler Jr.; sisters Gladys Schubmehl and Carolyn Schryver.

She is survived by 5 sons: James A. (Carol Reiter) Duell Jr. of Warsaw, Roger B. (Valerie) Duell of Warsaw, Donald L. (Kristin) Duell of Warsaw, Harold P. (Gina) Duell of Perry and Ralph N. (Elizabeth) Duell of Hunt 1 daughter: Marjorie E. (John) Hart of Pittsford, 2 sisters: Pauline Stricker of Binghamton and Marilyn Ahearn of Arkport ,14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Timothy F. Paine, 47 of Batavia, died April 23, 2012 at his home. He was born August 21, 1964 in Warsaw to Paul (Gloria Stedman) Paine of FL. Tim drove truck for Swift Trucking in Syracuse.   

Tim is survived by his beloved wife Diane L. (Brietzke) Paine of Batavia; children Maxwell A. and Daphne R. Paine both of Batavia; a brother Terry (Debbie) Paine of Batavia; sisters Sue (Richard) Schauf of Batavia; Katrina (John) Smith of Livonia; Karyn (Marty) Carpenter of FL; along with many nieces and nephews.

Michael J. Serventi, family business owner and devoted community serviceman, dies at 61.
Mike Serventi of Perry, NY, died on April 18, 2012, after suffering injuries from a bike accident.  Mike left his home in Vero Beach, FL at around 9:45am for his daily morning bike ride, and was hit from behind shortly after 10am by a car that had drifted into the bike lane.  He died from brain injuries within a few hours of the accident.

Professionally, Mike was the CEO of Lew-Mark Baking, a Perry, NY based commercial bakery founded by Mike’s father and uncle.  Mike’s father, Mark, put him to work in the bakery as a boy, instilling a strong work ethic and sense of accountability.  After beginning his career with Johnson & Johnson in Atlanta, Mike returned to Western NY to work and eventually run the family business before selling to a larger commercial bakery. Mike always attributed the success of the family business to the strong respect and consideration each family member gave to one another.

Following the sale of Lew-Mark Baking, Mike remained active in the business community, serving as an operating partner of Buffalo based Summer Street Capital Partners, and as an independent board member of several private and public companies in the financial services, manufacturing and healthcare industries.

In the local community, Mike was a committed member of the Perry Rotary Club where he was known for doing goofy dance routines at the annual charity minstrel show.  He dedicated time to the YMCA, where he and others worked hard to bring a YMCA facility to Warsaw, NY. He was also involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America.
After graduating from Perry High School, Mike attended Ithaca College.  Mike was passionately committed to Ithaca, and was an active alum, ultimately serving on the board of trustees for 10 years. Mike was a member of Delta Kappa fraternity, and remained close with his brothers.  Mike completed his MBA at Suffolk University.

Above all, Mike was a committed family man and friend.  He had an insatiable curiosity and love for life, and spent his time listening to jazz and blues, reading, appreciating film, improving his golf game and spending time with his family. He is survived by Gail, his wife of 38 years; his son Jesse and his wife Lauren, their two sons, Luke and Cole; his daughter Michaela and her husband Erick; and his mother Charlotte.  Mike was a loving father, devoted husband and was close with his daughter- and son-in-law. He experienced profound joy in being a grandfather.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8pm at Eaton Watson Funeral Home in Perry on Friday, May 4. Mike’s memory will be honored at a memorial service at the Perry High School Auditorium at 5pm on Saturday, May 5.

Fay L. Totten, 91of Stafford, died April 24, 2012 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.  He was born December 7, 1920 in Friendship, New York to the late Roland (Pearl Hilleshiem) Totten. Mr. Totten was a retired Dairy Farmer and owner of Hy-Hope Farms, Inc. in Stafford for 60 years He was a member and deacon of the Morganville United Church of Christ, member of Community Co-Op, Kesequea Grange, Genesee County Extension and Genesee County Fair Board.  He also loved caining chairs and loved to read. He is predeceased by a son Kenneth Totten, his brothers Milford, William, Verlin, Harold, Calvin, Harvey, Leonard, Bernard, and Buford Totten, sisters Bessie Armison, Regina Popp and Vione Loomis.    

Fay is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years Betty Buck Totten of Stafford, sons Richard (Bonnie) Totten of Morganville, Ronald (Barbara) Totten of Stafford, daughters Linda (Charles) Miller of Warsaw, Brenda (Masami) Iburi of Morganville, daughter in law Patricia Totten of Stafford.  14 Grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Laurie L. McCoy, 49 of Batavia, was called home to the Lord unexpectedly on April 21, 2012. She was born August 13, 1962 in Batavia to the late Carlton C. Snell and Marilyn (Ross) Snell-Brown of Wellsville. Laurie was a Registered Medical Assistant and was working at Lamb Family Medicine in Batavia. She was a member of Northgate Free Methodist Church, MOPS, and in 2010 she received the Mother of the Year award given by the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Laurie was extremely proud of her son Micah and all that he was involved in. She is preceded in death by her father.

In addition to her mother she is survived by her beloved husband Maury R. McCoy of Batavia; son Micah R. McCoy of Batavia; daughter Aime P. McCoy of Pensacola, FL; brother Carlton E. (Melanie) Snell of Wyoming, NY; sisters Karen Walsh-Riggi of Sun Prairie, WI; Margaret (Dan) Frank of LeRoy; Melissa (Steven) Paladino of LeRoy; Dawn Walker of Batavia; Susan Snell of LeRoy; 4 grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and 2 great nephews also survive.

Darien Center - Shirley M. Shamp, 81, of Darien Center, passed away Saturday (April 21, 2012) at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia.

Shirley was born May 3, 1930, in Darien, the daughter of the late Henry and Florence Moser Kohlhagen.  Shirley was a 50 plus year member of the Corfu Grange, a member of the Genesee County Pomona Grange, New York State Grange and National Grange.  She was also a member of the Corfu United Presbyterian Church.

Shirley was a very dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.  She took great pride in holding on to family traditions, with special days set aside for things like baking Christmas cookies to coloring easter eggs.  Besides taking care of her own family, she was a caregiver for many children in the area.  Shirley loved to cook.  Flowers and gardening were two of her favorite pastimes.  She had a gentle, soft and loving way about her, that will be missed by everyone whose lives she touched.  Shirley's beloved husband of 61 years, Harold R. Shamp, passed away November 19, 2011.

Shirley is survived by two dear daughters, Kathy Miller of Varysburg and Connie (Paul) Alonzo of Darien Center;  four precious grandchildren, Kristie Miller (Michael Plitt) of Darien Center, Katie (Rasmus) Miller of Aalborg, Denmark, Andrew Alonzo of Darien Center and Amy Alonzo of Darien Center; two great-grandchildren, Imogene Plitt and Henrik Miller.

Donald Hughes, age 86,of Perry died Tuesday April 17, 2012 at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born in Freedom, New York on May 6, 1925 a son of the late Carroll and Margaret(Davis)Hughes. Don served with the US Army during WWII under General George Patton, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Utah Beach landing and liberation of Bergen/Belsen Concentration Camp. He graduated from Ithaca Collage with a Bachelors in Music in 1949, and Alfred University with his Masters in Administration. He was the music teacher for Panama Central School in Panama, NY for 5 years. In 1954 he ran Castiglia’s Music Store in Hamburg until 1956, and accepted the music teacher position at Perry Central School where he worked until his retirement in 1986. Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perry for 55 years where he was the choir director for 50 years. A member of the Perry VFW Post 5009, Perry Vets Club, Perry Rotary Club where he was a former President, he directed the Rotary Musical for over 50 years, he had 2 Big Bands for many years the Universal Swing and the Full Swing and he had a 4 piece Jazz band called the Don Hughes Quartet. His love for music was evident through out the community with his teaching and playing, besides music he enjoyed golfing, playing chess, reading and especially spending time with his family. Don is preceded in death by son Michael Hughes who died in 2011; daughter Beth Ann Zawisza who died in 2012; brother Lawrence Hughes and a brother-in-law Charles Jankovits.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Salley(Feraldi) Hughes whom he married on September 13, 1947, 2 sons: Steven (Barb) Hughes of Omaha,NE, Patrick (Karen) Hughes of Cedarburg,WI, a daughter: Robin (Mike) Fitch of Warsaw, a son-in-law: Norman Zawisza of St. Albans VT, a daughter-in-law: Dawnne Hughes of LeRoy, a sister: Janis Jankovits of Spencerport, a brother: Floyd (Gretchen) Hughes of Rochester, 16 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Kristin V. Munger, 39, of Dalton, NY formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Thursday (April 19, 2012) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY.

She was born in Batavia on January 27, 1973, a daughter of Lawrence Munger of Dalton, NY and the late Linda Haynes Harvie.

She was a fun, loving and high spirited individual who could light up a room with her joyous personality.  She will be dearly missed by all who had their life touched by her.

Kristin is survived by her father and step-mother, Lawrence (Pamela Yakubek) Munger of Dalton.  Brother and sister in-law, Matthew (Sara) Munger of Apex, NC. Half sister, Sophia Carmichael of New Orleans, LA. Step sister, Fara Megargee of Baltimore, MD.  She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and several friends.

She was predeceased by her mother, Linda Haynes Harvie.  Maternal grandparents, Carl and Sophia Haynes.  Paternal grandparents, Marian Zito and Bernard Munger.  Step grandfather,  Frank Zito.

Elba - Mr. Carl Anthony Barone, 73, of Elba, a Communications Specialist at New York State Police, Troop A in Batavia from 1972 to 1996, died Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Rochester General Hospital. 

Mr. Barone was born November 14, 1938 in Buffalo, the son of the late John C. and Carmella (Fricano) Barone.

He served with the Navy from June 28, 1952 to August 31, 1959.  Shortly after being discharged from the Navy, Mr. Barone worked for Pan-Am/RCA in support of the Eastern Missile Test Range.  He lived overseas at that time and traveled extensively to places such as Ascension, Trinidad and Antigua.  He was a 20 year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba, member of the NYS Retired Troopers Association and member of the former St. Nicholas Social Club.  He was an avid Golfer Bowler and Fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Faye A. (Pridmore) Barone whom  he married June 28, 1975; a daughter, Melissa Barone of Elba; a sister, JoAnne (Richard) Cobb of Oceanside, CA; several cousins including, Paula (Steve) Colangelo-Rosendahl of CO; a special family friend, Melanie McLeod of N. Tonawanda; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.  

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield.  Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the First Presbyterian Church, 23 N. Main St., Elba.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for distribution to various charities.  Burial will be in Maplelawn Cemetery in Elba.  

Mrs. Janie E. Stokes of Woodstock, GA passed away Tuesday April 10, 2012 at home with her husband Bruce and daughter Heather by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was 61.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 16, 2012 at Timothy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Constien officiating.  Visitation will be held Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Woodstock Funeral Home.  Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to www.gaovariancancer.org/donate/

Mrs. Stokes was born October 23, 1950 to the late Leon and Cynthia Cutler Martin in Potsdam, New York.  Janie attended Potsdam High School.  She obtained a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in English and Education at the State University of New York at Potsdam and a Gifted Specialist Degree from Berry College in Rome, GA.  Janie and Bruce were married August 19, 1972 in Potsdam, New York and were happily married for 39 years.  She had a lifelong love of children and her childhood ambition was to become an educator.  Mrs. Stokes realized her ambition by teaching for 35 years in New York, Michigan, Cobb and Cherokee Counties where she positively touched the lives of hundreds of young students.  She was honored as the Cherokee County Teacher of the Year in 1988 and the Cobb County Teacher of the year in 1994.

Janie’s other passion was making quilts.  She collected over 140 children’s story books that incorporated quilts in the story.  Her dream of using books and quilts based on the stories as an educational tool has been realized by an organization called “Story Book Quilts-Janie’s Dream”.  Her quilt guild, Chattahoochee Evening Stars, to date, has made quilts to compliment thirty-seven of the storybooks.  The quilts and books are lent to schools and libraries in the metro Atlanta area for their reading programs.

Janie is survived by her husband Bruce G. Stokes, Woodstock, GA.; daughter, Heather Elizabeth Wurst, (Peter),Pennsburg, Pennsylvania; one son, Nathaniel Martin Stokes, Central Square, New York; one granddaughter, Emma Elizabeth Wurst, Pennsburg, Pennsylvania; one sister, Catherine Yack, Huntsville, AL.; two brothers, Leon Martin, Jr., (Paula) Potsdam, New York, and Robert Martin, (Marie) Potsdam, New York;  mother-in-law, Alice Stokes, South Byron, New York; one brother-in-law, Douglas Stokes, Poway, California; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Gillard (Craig), Batavia, New York, and Kathy Cummings (Dan), South Byron, New York.
