Bette S. Evans

Bette S. Evans, 76 of Perry died October 22, 2010 at the Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw. Mrs. Evans was born in Silver Lake, NY daughter of the late Eldon Safford and Verda (Clark) Safford of Warsaw. She worked for over 20 years at Mallory Timers in Warsaw. She loved sewing, embroidering, computers and photography.

Mrs. Evans is survived by her husband James E. Evans of Perry; sons David Evans of Buffalo; Daniel (Holly) Evans of Perry Center; brothers William (Sally) Safford of Perry; Roger (Donna) Safford of Lima; sister Edna (Harold) Schutte of Fairport; 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild along with many nieces, nephews also survive.

Friends are invited to call on Monday October 25th from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday October 26th at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Silver Springs.

Onalee E. Mills

Warsaw - Mrs. Onalee E. Mills, 93, of Warsaw and formerly of Genesee County, died Thursday, (October 21, 2010)at the Eastside Nursing Home in Warsaw.
Mrs. Mills was born October 1, 1917 in Basom, the daughter of the late Luwellyn and Luella (Sprague) Hatch.
She was a registered nurse at the former Genesee Memorial Hospital and former St. Jerome's Hospital for 25 years. Mrs. Mills was a member of First Baptist Church of Batavia and attended the Batavia Christian Women's Club. She also belonged to The Genesee County Historical Society and participated in The Current Books and Topics Club. 
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Charles) Canon of Wyoming and Gail (James) Richert of Lakeport, Michigan; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mills is predeceased by her two husbands, Albert Neth, who died in 1970 and Olin Mills who died in 1980. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Edward Hatch and Lloyd Hatch.  
Calling hours will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Batavia, 306 East Main Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Stafford Rural Cemetery. Lori Ann Nelson

Bergen - Mrs. Lori Ann Nelson, 49, of Bergen, a bookkeeper for the Town of Bergen and Joanne Amon, CPA, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mrs. Nelson was born February 10, 1961 in Jamestown, the daughter of John "Jack" and Mary (Tornstrom) Rounds of Las Vegas, NV.

She was a member for 11 years and Vice President for 8 years of the Byron Bergen Central School Board of Education, a voting delegate to the New York State School Board Association, and served on the Executive Board of the Genesee Valley School Boards Association. She was a member of the Byron Bergen Sports Boosters and volunteer for school musical productions. She remained active in student activities long after her children had graduated from Byron Bergen High School and was active in Boy Scouts and former Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts as well as volunteering at the Bergen 1st Presbyterian Church Nursery and Vacation Bible School.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Nelson whom she married October 10, 1981; a son, Mitchel Nelson of Bergen; 2 daughters, Bobbi Gayle Nelson of Niagara Falls and Regina Nelson of Herkimer, 2 brothers, Randy (Bonnie) Rounds of Las Vegas and David Rounds; several nieces, nephews and many close friends whom she welcomed into her family.  

Friends may call on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 S. MICHAEL C. STEUBER

LeRoy - Mr. Michael C. Steuber, 67, of LeRoy, retired forklift mechanic for Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, died Sunday, October 17, 2010at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mr. Steuber was born May 29, 1943 in Rochester, a son of the late Edward Carl and Margaret Henrietta Steuber.
 
Mr. Steuber served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War attaining the rank of sergeant. He worked on jet engines at Da Nang Air Base and received five medals for his service.
 
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Gloria Greenman Steuber; his son, Keith (Lydia) Steuber of North Carolina; his step-daughter, Lisa (Dan) Tasmer of Friendship; his brother, Edward Steuber of Kendall; four grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and friends.

Fred J. Allein

Batavia - Fred J. Allein, 88, of Batavia, a retired Master Sergeant of the US Air Force and retired Director of the Emergency Management Services, Disaster Preparedness, died unexpectedly Friday, October 15, 2010at New York State Veteran's Home, in Batavia.

Mr. Allein was born November 24, 1921 in Buffalo, the son of the late Joseph and Helen Allein.
 
In January of 1942, Mr. Allein enlisted in the Army Air Force. Overseas assignments followed in June of 1942 and he was shipped to Port Tufie, Egypt. He became one of the first Americans in Africa in support of the British Eighth Army, being assigned to the British 376th “Hell” Bomb Squadron. He then spent a year in Italy and returned to the US in 1944. In February of 1953 he was recalled to active duty. In November of 1953 he was ordered to Germany, where he spent 5 years and then to Alaska. He eventually retired from the US Air Force while stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base, SAC, on August 31, 1967.
 
He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, former member of Stafford Country Club, Batavia Country Club, BPO Elks, LOOM, Polish Falcons, Godfrey’s Pond and St. Nick’s Club. Mr. Allein belonged to the American Legion where he served as Commander and was a member of the VFW. He especially enjoyed playing cards.
 
Surviving is his wife, Gloria Athoe Allein whom he married December 17, 1944. He was grandfather of the late Richard Whitcombe who died in 2006 and brother of the late Shirley Jahries.
 
Also surviving are one son, James (Cheryl) Allein of Attica; two daughters, Gloria (Robert) Chapman of Byron and Pamela (David) Whitcombe of Batavia and one sister, Joan Summers of Rochester. He was the loving grandfather of Brent Chapman, Robert Chapman, Rebecca (Matthew) Roggow, Jeffrey (Shannon) Whitcombe, Ryan Whitcombe, Abby Allein, Alyssa Allein and Braden Allein; great-grandfather of Jared and Jacob Roggow, Kaelin Chapman, Andrew, Noah and Cora Whitcombe. Also surviving are a granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca Whitcombe and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Josephine Pacer

Batavia - Mrs. Josephine Pacer, 86, of Batavia, a retired inspector at Oliver's Candies, died Friday, (October 15, 2010) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Mrs. Pacer was born August 18, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Louis and Rose Scammaca DeFino.

She was a member of Ascension Parish - St. Anthony's Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robert (Susan) Pacer of Stafford, Martin Pacer of Akron and Alan (Eileen) Pacer of Tennessee; grandchildren, Kevin Pacer of LeRoy, Kathleen Pacer of Cleveland, Martin (Danielle) Pacer of Corfu, Sarah Pacer of Clearwater, Florida, Andrew Pacer, Stacia Pacer and Vincent Pacer, all of Naples, Florida; great grandchildren, Annabel Rumenapp and Michael Pacer; a sister, Jennie Hawks of Batavia; two sisters-in-law, Alice (Frank) Anders of Medina and Rita (Homer) Warden of Akron and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Arthur F. Pacer died in 1997. She is the grandmother of the late Jason Pacer, sister of the late Salvatore "Spats" DeFino, Mary Klute, Anne LaFarnara, Millie Povorski and Betty Margarine and sister-in-law of the late Felicia Lotz and Donald Pacer.

James V. Arena Jr.

James V. Arena Jr., 59 of Batavia, NY. Died October 14, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health for the last 2 years. Born August 6, 1951 in Batavia, NY. Son of the late James V. Arena Sr. (June 17, 1986) and the late Martha (Valery) Arena (Feb. 1, 2010). 

James worked for Conrail until he became disabled. He was best known for his role as lead guitarist in the rock band The Squires playing for the Lions Club, Buffalo Autorama shows, Batavia High School Plays and disabled children programs. He would teach exceptional children instruments which resulted in comments to the letters to the Editor in a time when long hair was in style “We do well to remind ourselves from time to time man looketh upon the outward appearance but God looketh upon the heart.” James had an exceptional gift of working with the disabled and will be sadly missed by little Eric. 

James had a heart of gold and will be deeply missed by his loving family. Brother Jerry Arena of Batavia; sisters Nancy Arena of Batavia; Mary (William) Davis III of Batavia; Dr. Linda Arena of Ohio. He leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews, Tina (Dwayne) Fonda Sr., Roger (Amy) Fagan, Evelyn Davis, Dwayne Fonda Jr., Taler Fonda, Tieryn Fonda, Tate Fonda, Travis Fagan Amy Lee Fagan and Tyler Arena Fagan. 

There will be no prior calling hours. A 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday October 19, 2010 at Resurrection Parish-St. Mary’s Church 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, NY 14020.

Mary A. Sputore

   Mary A. Sputore, 84 of Batavia, NY. Died October 15, 2010 at the New York State Veterans Home. Born September 28, 1926 in Batavia, New York, daughter of the late Ralph (Jennie Bonarigo) Soccio. Mrs. Sputore worked for many years at GTE Sylvania. She was a member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church. Mrs. Sputore was a past member of the Catholic Daughters and the Altar & Rosary Society. She was an avid bingo and card player. She is preceded in death by her husband John Sputore (1982) and brother Rocco Soccio. 
 
She is survived by son Paul (Mary) Sputore of Batavia; daughter Donna (Jeff) Gillard of Batavia; brothers Joseph (Shirley) Soccio of FL; James Soccio of Batavia; grandchildren Christopher (Carrie) Sputore, Geoffrey (Keri) Roche, Michael (Julie) Sputore, Melissa (Ryan) Biegasiewicz, 3 great-grandchildren survive along with several nieces and nephews.

John R. Corbelli

John R. Corbelli, 85, of Williamsville and Batavia, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 2010) at Hospice Buffalo in Cheektowaga.

He was born in Minersville, PA a son of Italian imigrants Carlo and Domenica Tecca Corbelli.

Mr. Corbelli was a veteran of WW II during the Battle of the Buldge under General George Patton.   He achieved the rank of sergeant and was the recipient of a Bronze Star for heroism.   Prior to his retirement he was a corrections officer at Attica Prison and Wendy Correctional Facility in Alden.

Surviving is his wife of over 55 years, Antoinette Wandryk Corbelli.  Two sons and a daughter in law, Richard and John (Jane) Corbelli.  Three grand daughters, Mary, Jennifer and Annie.  Sisters, Elizabeth and Antoinette and the late Mary Jo.   Brothers: Bernard, Sandy, Peter, Louis, Octoavian, Leo and Victor Corbelli.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA. where prayers will be Monday at 8:45 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph site).  Full military honors will follow at the church.

Ronald P. Dixon

Batavia - Ronald P. Dixon, 54, of Batavia, a truck driver at Lynn H. Scott Inc. of Blossvale, NY, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mr. Dixon was born May 22, 1956 in Batavia, the son of Virginia (Jeffers) Dixon Ackers and the late Willis Dixon.

He served with the Marine Corps from 1974 to 1976. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler, camper, and NASCAR fan who followed Jeff Burton. He was also a member of the Genesee County Fish and Game Protective Association at Godfrey's Pond.

Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda (Hirsch) Dixon, whom he married December, 12, 1978; a son, Ronald (Desiree') Dixon Jr. of Batavia; a daughter, Danielle Dixon Ryan of Batavia, 2 brothers, William (Terry) Dixon of NC and Dennis (Holly) Dixon of Painted Post, a sister, Peggy (Jon) Landin of Corfu; 5 grandchildren Hailey Dixon of Batavia, Sarai-Lyn Dixon of Batavia, Kolyan Ohlson of Batavia, Arianna Ohlson of Batavia and Blake Carpenter of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

GERTRUDE A. DAVIS

   Age 72, of Batavia, died Monday October 11, 2010 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born November 7, 1937 in Batavia daughter of the late Lewis & Margaret (Say) Markle. Mrs. Davis lived in San Jose, CA with her youngest daughter Dawn for 20 years. She moved back to the Batavia area 5 years ago after retiring, to be closer to her other children and grandchildren to whom she was very devoted to. When not with her family, you would most likely find her working in her yard and in her many flower gardens.

   Surviving are her loving children Sandra (Kennedy) "Skip" Wilson of East Bethany, Brenda (Rick) Rehac of Alden, William (Maureen) Davis of Batavia and Dawn Davis of San Jose, CA. Brothers & sisters Ray Markle of Albion, Dick (Nancy) Markle of NC, Lee (Terri Haines) Markle of Albion, Reed (Joy) Markle of Albion, Sue (Ron) Woodworth of Albion, Eleanor (Bob Saltzman) Kerstetter of TX and Helen (Bill) Shetler of Albion. She is also survived by her 3 grandchildren Justin Davis of Batavia, Molly & Daniel Rehac both of Alden along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and her very special friend Margie Rodak.

   The family will be present from 3-7 PM Thursday October 14, 2010 at the Michael S. PAULINE A. PCIONEK

   Age 82, of Oakfield, devoted mother and grandmother died peacefully Thursday afternoon October 7, 2010 at her home. Born May 26, 1928 in Batavia daughter of the late Paul & Anna (Stanek) Starowitz Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband Richard T. Pcionek Sr. in 1989 and brothers Chester (late Regina) Starowitz, Henry (late Adeline) Starowitz, Rudolph (late Irene) Starowitz, Edmund Starowicz, Aloysius (late Eleanor) Starowitz and the late Stephen Starowitz. She was a lifetime member of Ascension Parish (former Sacred Heart) and its Altar & Rosary Society. She was a secretary at Elba Central Schoool for nine years, bookkeeper for her husband's paving business which is now run by her sons and worked for the Genesee County Board of Elections. She had a fondness for politics and served as Vice Chairperson of the Democratic Party in the 60's. She was an avid gardener, loved to travel and had a passion for photography.

   Surviving is her loving children Richard T. (Bernadette) Pcionek Jr. & James (Joyce) Pcionek both of Elba and Joanne Pcionek of Oakfield; brothers Leo (Delores) Starowitz of Elba; Paul (Lottie) Starowicz of Batavia; sisters-in-law Mary Starowicz of Batavia and Jennie Starowitz of Bergen; two granddaughters Jessica & Jamie Pcionek of Elba along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

   The family will be present from 4-8 PM Sunday Oct. 10, 2010 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 9:00 AM Monday Oct. 11, 2010 followed by a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Site) celebrated by Father Robert Orlowski. MATTHEW LIEBERMAN

Batavia - Matthew Lieberman, 23, of Batavia died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, in Buffalo following a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

 
Matthew was born July 22, 1987 in Buffalo, a son of Linda Lee Terrell Lieberman of Batavia and the late Howard Lieberman.

Fighting his cancer for the entirety of his senior year, Matthew graduated on time with a Pre-Medical Bachelor’s of Science focusing on Sports Medicine from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. Despite his battle, Matthew remained a committed leader on campus as president of the Sports Medicine Student Association.
 
Matthew’s love for sports extended outside the classroom.  He was a longstanding fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees, and would watch football and baseball games as often as he could.  His knowledge of and skill in technology and computer science proved his talent knew no bounds. Nor did his heart: he loved dogs, cared for his family and was dedicated to his beloved fiancée, Jenelle Remington.

Surviving along with his mother are his siblings, Joshua Lieberman of New York City and Alicia Lieberman of Batavia; his fiancée, Jenelle Remington of Penfield; several aunts and uncles including, Teri and David Tanenhaus of Binghamton, NY and Marcia Lieberman of Lexington, MA and several cousins and friends.

MAVIS E. PATTERSON

Batavia - Mrs. Mavis E. Patterson, 89, of Batavia, a nutritionist at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Batavia for 20 years, died October 5, 2010at the Batavia Nursing Home.

Mrs. Patterson was born April 22, 1921 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Harold and Blanche Raab Griswold.
 
She worked as a nurse at the former St. Jerome Hospital prior to working at Cornell Cooperative and following her time at Cornell Cooperative, she worked as a secretary at Orleans Community Action in Batavia.
 
She was a member of the Zonta Club, American Legion Post No. 332. She enjoyed reading, loved to play bingo and was a fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.
 
Her husband, Reubon O. Patterson, died January 8, 1988.
 
Survivors include one son, Keith O. Patterson; a foster son, John (Judy) Ladd of Batavia; a brother, Gary (Beverly) Griswold of Syracuse; grandchildren, Melissa Metcalf of Batavia, Kelly Patterson, Kurtis (Angela) Patterson, Aaron Patterson and  Brett Patterson, both currently serving with the United States Navy and John Ladd, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jenna Kent, Megan Ladd, Kadin Patterson, Allison Patterson and Makayla Davis; her dear friend, Ann Squires of Jacksonville, Florida and  nieces and nephews.
 
She is the mother of the late Lucinda Patterson Metcalf.
 
There are no prior calling hours. Her services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Memorials may be made to Cornell Cooperative Extension, 420 East Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. Burial will be in West Bethany Cemetery.

Ronald C. Hopfer

Ronald C. Hopfer, 80 of Batavia, NY died October 4, 2010 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, NY. Born April 23, 1930 in Bronx, NY. He worked for over 20 years for the City of Rochester School District where he was the director of purchasing before retiring. After retiring he enjoyed spending his winters at Ft. McAllister in Savannah, Georgia as a park ranger and camp host. Mr. Hopfer was a member of the Lone Wolf Car Club with his famed 1977 Matador, an avid drum corps enthusiast being involved for many years with St. Joseph’s Drum Corps. He was also a Marine Corps Veteran, obtaining the rank of Staff Sgt. Serving from 1950 to 1954 and a member of the VFW Post in Batavia. 
 
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Sylvia (Burdsal) Hopfer of Batavia, a son Russell (Sandy) Hopfer of Pavilion, 2 daughters Vicky (Dean) Devie of Long Island, and Cindy (Edward) Carroll of Rochester, NY. 6 grandchildren Thomas and Meghan Carroll, Adam (Mary) Capizzano, Steffani (Justin) Murry and Katie and Kyle Hopfer. 
 
Friends are invited to call from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday October 11, 2010, at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 W. Main St. Batavia, NY 14020. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday October 12, 2010 at the Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company Inc. 329- 333 W. Main St. Batavia, NY at 11:00 AM.
