Marvin E. Gilliatt Sr., 78 of Batavia, passed away August 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family under HomeCare & Hospice. He was born May 17, 1935 in Batavia to the late Clarence (Madeline Bartlett) Gilliatt. Mr. Gilliatt worked for many years at Agway Fertilizer in Batavia.  He was an avid hunter who loved to shoot trap and skeet.  Marvin belonged to the Five Points Gun Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette (Whipple) Gilliatt, son Marvin E. Gilliatt Jr. and Brother Melvin Gilliatt.

Marvin is survived by his three daughters, Debra (Grant) Carlson, Dawn (Steve) Boyki, and Linda Vigiano, all of Batavia. 9 grandchildren, Bethany & Shyann Ruffino, Robert Mack Jr., Kaylyn & Kiera Carlson, Adrienne, Jennifer & Joseph Boyki, Gregory Vigiano; 5 great-grandchildren, Zaylee Boyki, Ashton Houston, Isla Wolfe, Bailey & Kevin Newton-Vigiano, along with several nieces and nephews.

Russell L. Marchese Sr., 79, of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away peacefully on August 8, 2013. He was a loving husband of 56 years to Antonia Marchese and a devoted father.

Born in Batavia, NY on March 2, 1934, to the late Joseph R. and Carrie Marchese Sr., Russ owned and operated Marchese National Food Stores in the Batavia community for many years.

He is survived by sons Russell L. Marchese Jr. (Diane Marchese), of Batavia, NY, and Matthew J. Marchese (Melody Marchese), of Williamsville, NY, as well as daughters Marianne L. Jensen (Billy Jensen), of Herndon, Va., Kathleen A. Dermody of Bergen, NY, Joan M. Marchese (David Foster), of Bolton, Mass., Lisa K. Marchese (Karen Evans) of Albuquerque, NM, and Jennifer L. Crockett (Timothy Crockett), of Grand Island, NY.

He will be missed by his 14 grandchildren: William Marchese and his spouse, Jessi Marchese; Sarah, Joanna and Rebecca Jensen; Kristina Marchese and her fiancé, Greg Thurber; Katelyn and Shannon Dermody; Owen and Henry Foster; Louis and Carmela Marchese; Zoe and Sasha Evans; Evan Crockett; and 2 great-grandchildren, Ronan and Elliot Marchese.

In addition, Russ is survived by a brother, Robert Marchese (Judith) of New Port Richie, Fla., and 2 sisters, Carolyn McGorray (Thomas McGorray) of Tucson, Ariz., and Dorothy Marchese of Batavia, NY, a brother-in-law, Louis Marazza (Marian) of Erie, Pa., and a sister-in-law, Arlene Gavazzi of Corry, Pa., as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Russ was predeceased by sisters, Rose Nigro and Florence Joy and brother, Joseph R. Marchese Jr.

While living in Batavia, Russ served the community for many years as a member of the Sertoma Club. When he retired to Florida he became an active member of the Sawdust Engineers in Sun City Center, Fla., to which he was elected President and served as a member of the board. He also sat on the Cypress View Community Board of Property Owners Association. He volunteered as a driver for Samaritan Services of Sun City Center and the Sun City Center Security Patrol.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on August 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Sun City Center, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Life Path Hospice, 3723 Upper Creek Drive Ruskin, FL 33573.

LeRoy - Joseph P. Dillon, age 83, passed away Saturday afternoon (August 10, 2013) at the New York State Veterans Home in Batavia.

     Mr. Dillon was born June 5, 1930 in Syracuse, a son of the late James and Emma (Schweitzer) Dillon.  He was the 11th of 13 children.

     Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1951.  The highlight of his service came while serving with the engineers from Fort Worden Washington responsible for building up Camp Desert Rock Nevada in 1952.  This service involved building up the Camp and participating in Operation Tumbler-Snapper.  He was one of many soldiers who observed and were exposed to multiple open air nuclear tests.  He received his Honorable Discharge in June 1953.

     After completing his military service, Joe went to work for The Continental Can Company in Syracuse. He relocated with CCC to Le Roy, NY in 1966 and retired from “the Can” in 1977.  Joe also later retired from the Genesee Country museum.  Joe also spent many years as a bartender at The Eagle Hotel, Downtown Le Roy and the American Legion Post 576 in Le Roy.

     He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Le Roy and the American Legion Post 576, Le Roy, N.Y.

     Known as ‘Poppy’ to his grandchildren, Joe is survived by his wife, Mary (Hewitt), children, Thomas (Teresa), Mary Ellen (Kevin) Hausman, Paul (Julie), Peter (Susan) and Siobhan (Todd) Salzman;  Grandchildren Meghan and Brenna Dillon; Emily Hausman and her husband Rabbi Joseph Robinson, Katie and Max Hausman, Jena, Sean, Enya and Quinten Dillon; Claire and Grace Dillon; Jack Salzman and Emily Chavez, great-grandchildren Ruth and Liam Robinson, sister Bernadette (Jim) Roberts, 18 nieces and nephews and several  grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his  brothers  John, James, George, Anthony, Alfred; and sisters, Ann Gallagher, Lucille Chiasson, Catherine, Mary, Jane and Emma.

     The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 ~ 7 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt 19), LeRoy.  His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 17 at 11 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish (St. Peter’s Church), 44 Lake Street, with interment to follow in St. Francis Cemetery.

Lyle was born in Newark, New York on October 19, 1953 a son of the late Lowell and Ella Mae Willover Osborne. Mr. Osborne worked for Sabin Metal in Churchville as a machine operator, he had also worked for the former CID and Waste Management in Chafee. Lyle was a member of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed playing steel guitar in bands or just at home, building pulling tractors, doing mechanical work, working on model cars and trucks, playing with his grandchildren, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Rose Cornelius Osborne, 3 daughters: Terry (Pepe Garcia) Cornelius of Dale, Holly (Jim) Osborne Townley of Hamburg, Dawn (Joe) Osborne Smith of Bliss, 2 sons: Jesse (Candase) Osborne of Perry and Jason (Amanda) Osborne of Delevan a sister: Dora Jean Cummings og Hermitage, 2 brothers: Lowell Osborne Jr. of Northfolk, Fla., and Melvin (Lori) Osborne of Perry, 13 grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Robert John Van Wagnen, 87, of Batavia, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and cousin, passed away Tuesday (August 6, 2013) at New York State Veterans Home in Batavia.  Robert is now singing “How Great Thou Art” to his Savior God.

Mr. Van Wagnen was born February 8, 1926 in West Sparta, NY, a son of the late Howard and Helen (Webster) Van Wagnen.

He is a retired farmer and also worked for the NYS School for the Blind.

Robert loved tinkering, fixed many a washer and dryer.  He loved to play cards and won most of the time.  He also loved to square dance and listen to blue grass music and in his younger days was quite the trombone player.  After retirement, Robert took up shuffle board in Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Wilma (Armison) Van Wagnen of Batavia; a son, David (Esther) Van Wagnen of Ontario, NY; three daughters, Nancy (Raymond) Argulski of Cleveland, NY, Pamela (Raymond) White of Colorado Springs, CO and Patricia (Richard) Dutton of Batavia.  Nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.

He is a brother of the late Donald Van Wagnen, Richard Van Wagnen and John Van Wagnen.

There are no prior calling hours.  Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at First Baptist Church of Batavia, 306 East Main Street, Batavia.

Age 83, of Batavia, a retired New York State Trooper (Troop A), retiring as an Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, died peacefully Tuesday morning August 6, 2013 at the New York State Veterans Home in Batavia. He was born March 15, 1930 in Stoneham, MA to the late Samuel J. & Vera (Belle) Duken also preceded in death by a brother, Donald.  

   A United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. In addition to spending time with his family he enjoyed fishing, hunting, model shipbuilding and was a long time member of the Elks Club of Batavia.

   Surviving is his beloved wife, whom he married August 8, 1951, Arlene "Connie" (Horn) Duken of Batavia; loving children, Richard W. Duken of Wilmington, OH, Patricia (Michael) Reich, Diane (Benjamin) Bonarigo all of Batavia and; brother, Gilbert (Judith) Duken of Plattsburgh, NY; sister-in-law, Esperanza Duken of New Mexico; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Duken's wishes were to have services held privately by the family. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery and memorials in his memory are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

   Age 72, of Batavia, died peacefully Sunday evening August 4, 2013 at his home under Family Hospice Care. He was born May 29, 1941 in Batavia, a son of the late Stanley C. & Mary (Torcello) Dombrowski.

   Stanley was a machine repair specialist at Batavia Metal Products for many years until his retirement in 2004. At a young age he developed a passion for cars and that passion carried on, and was shared with his family. In 1964 he was the NHRA Class Champion (modified production), member of the Right Coast Association, Inc. (street rods), the Lone Wolf Cruisers of Batavia and loved to take his 1931 Ford Coupe to car shows. Family, friends, cars and his dog, "Flash" were Stan's life.

   Surviving is his beloved wife of 53 years, Lorraine (Palone) Dombrowski of Batavia; loving son, Stan (Sheri) Dombrowski of Oakfield; brothers, Russ Columbo of East Bethany, Tony (Sheila) Dombrowski of TN; brother-in-law, Alan (Ginger) of Dansville; sister-in-law, Harriet Scopano of Batavia; grandchildren, Kelly of Batavia and Stanley of Oakfield; favorite nephew, Frank (Tammy) Scopano of Batavia along with many nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Cole was formerly employed at O&E Growers and was an avid hunter

   Surviving are his children, Heidi (Charles Keating) Cole of Albion and Edward (Melissa) Cole of Pembroke; former wife, Diane Cole of Batavia; sister, Jane (Frank) Zielinski of Elba; niece, Terry Hirsch and nephew, David Zielinski.

Leo S. Mager, 89, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Sunday (August 4, 2013) at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

He was born in Batavia, NY on August 9, 1923, a son of the late Stanley and Anna Kosciolek Mager.

Leo attended Sacred Heart School and Batavia public schools.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served aboard the U.S.S. Monterey as a gunner’s mate.  His wartime duty saw action in the Pacific Theater and the Philippines.  Leo was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.  In 1947, Leo and his brother Henry began Arctic Refrigeration Co. in Batavia and worked throughout the years with his family until his retirement in 1989.  In his retirement years, Leo was a master woodcarver and enjoyed traveling with his wife.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Dunn Mager of Batavia. Daughter, Karen (Charles) Hart of Marion, NY. Two sons, Douglas (Diane) Mager of Belchertown, MA and David (Donna) Mager of Warsaw, NY.  Six grandchildren, Caitlyn (Adam) Bishop, Taylor Hart, Carly Hart, Andrew (Kristine) Mager, Forrest Mager and Holly Mager.  Brother, Joseph (Rosemary) Mager of Batavia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was the grandfather of the late Charles Hart, Jr. and brother of the late Henry (Kathleen) Mager.

Gary Paul Loveland, 63, of E. Bethany, died Friday (August 2, 2013) at his residence while under Family Hospice Care.

He was born in Batavia on August 15, 1949 a son of the late Albert Loveland and Dorothy Gray Loveland of Pavilion.

Gary was a heavy equipment operator for the Genesee County Highway Department for over 40 years where he was fondly known as "Boxcar".  He served with the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971.  While serving in Vietnam, Specialist 5th Class Gary Loveland received a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.  He successfully completed the Airborne Course on August 7, 1969 at Fort Benning Georgia and served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Upon his Honorable Discharge he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with w/60 Dev., 2 Overseas Bars and the Army Commendation Medal.

Surviving besides his mother is his wife of over 26 years, Judith Fasano Loveland, two daughters: Jennifer Doherty of Batavia and Melissa Dettman of Pavilion.  Five grandchildren: Emily Doherty, Megan Doherty, Jacob Dettman, Sarah Lis and Zachary Dettman.  Brother and sister in law, Richard and Judy Loveland of Pavilion. 

Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and teaching his grandchildren about the outdoors.

Anthony “Britt” DiMartino, 84 of Batavia, passed away on July 31, 2013 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born August 30, 1928 in Batavia to the late Francesco (Antoinette DiPietro) DiMartino. Mr. DiMartino was the Manager of Mancuso Bowling Alley for many years. He was a United States Army Veteran; lifetime member of the St. Nicholas Social Club and was the President of Babe Ruth Senior League Baseball in Batavia for 18 years. Mr. DiMartino was a proud member of the Batavia Bowling Hall of Fame along with being part of the first father and son inductees. Britt was a lifetime member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church, Our Lady of Loreto, and the St. Nicholas Society. He was also very active in fundraising for numerous organizations years ago and was awarded Outstanding Italian American by the Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation. He is preceded in death by his daughter Linda Anne DiMartino Engelhardt; brother Frederick DiMartino and a sister Angeline Wyrwa.

Britt is survived by his beloved wife Providence (Gullo) DiMartino of Batavia; sons Phillip (Susan); Frank (Maria) both of Batavia; Anthony (Helen) DiMartino of Oswego; sister Mary DiMartino of Batavia; 9 grandchildren Matthew, Lindsey, Jason, Ryan, Taylor, Hannah DiMartino; Brandon Hines; Ricky and Mary Noel Engelhardt; 2 great-grandchildren Gavin and Dylan DiMartino; along with many nieces and nephews.

Batavia - Mrs. Nunziata Eleanor Longobardi, 96, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia.

Mrs. Longobardi was born March 23, 1917 in Glasport, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Carmela Mangone Tramontana.

She was a member of Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph’s Church) and the Sodality of the Church, Rosary & Altar Society of Ascension Parish (St. Anthony’s Church), St. Nicholas Society, Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation and the Legion of Mary.

Survivors include two sons; Ralph (Erika) Longobardi of Fairport and Carmen (Maureen) Longobardi of Ogden; two daughters, Rita Sidari of Batavia and Anne (Robert) Platten of Florida.  Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, several great and great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Longobardi was the mother of the late Gertrude Longobardi; mother-in-law of the late Frank Sidari and sister of the late Antonio Marie Pullinzi, Patrick Pullinzi, James Tramontana, Clara Scuderi, Mildred DiSanto and Christine Blasioli.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 PM at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Kathleen “Kay” Mary Mager, 84, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (July 30, 2013) at United Memorial Medical Center.

She was born on October 29, 1928 in Port Allegany, PA,  a daughter of the late Leon and Bertha DeLong Hurd.

Kay was a secretary for Arctic Refrigeration Co. since the inception of the business in 1947 and worked alongside her husband Henry and family.  During retirement, Kay and Henry traveled North America in their RV.  She was a member of the Batavia Society of Artists, where she held several offices and a member of the Genesee Orleans Arts Council.  Kay was also a member of Ascension Parish, the Altar and Rosary Society, Polish Falconette’s and volunteered for the Genesee County Nursing Home’s  art program.

She was the loving wife of the late Henry Mager, who died on August 20, 2009.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa (Richard) Tamfer and Jennifer (James) Jacobs, both of Batavia.  Three sons, Richard (Victoria) Mager, Michael (Jill Smith) Mager and William (Patricia) Mager, all of Batavia. Sister in-law, Jean Hurd of Oakfield.  Brothers in-law, Leo (Evelyn) Mager and Joseph (Rosemary) Mager, both of Batavia.  Also survived by ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Gay Mager Parker. Grandmother of the late Timothy Jon Rittersback. Great-grandmother of the late Jason Kelly and sister of the late Dolly Swift and Leroy Hurd.

Jane V. Scalia, 88 of Batavia, passed away on Monday July 29, 2013 at the United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on March 4, 1925 in Batavia to the late Peter (Jennie Gallina) Scalia. Ms. Scalia worked for Doehler Jarvis, Kodak, A&P Supermarket, Super Duper, and Jubilee. She was a longtime member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Nicholas Social Club Auxiliary. Ms. Scalia enjoyed Bingo, Cards, Crossword Puzzles, traveling and was known as an amazing storyteller. Her greatest joy was being a loving part of her nieces and nephews lives. She is preceded in death by her sister Mary (Lawrence) Barone, brother-in-law Norman Havens, and great-nephew Peter “PJ” Scalia, Jr.   

She is survived by her brother Anthony (Julia) Scalia of Batavia; sister Anna Mae “Anne” Havens of Batavia, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.   

Her wishes were to have no prior calling hours. A 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Ascension Parish 19 Sumner St. Batavia, NY 14020. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.
