John F. Messina

John F. Messina, 89 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday February 12, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born on October 2, 1924 in Batavia, to the late James (Sarah Ruffino) Messina. Mr. Messina was a lifelong muck farmer and former owner of the Mark Trail Motel. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, former Democratic Chairperson for Genesee County, member of the former St. Nicholas Social Club and active with the Salvation Army. He was an avid horseman who owned racehorses, he enjoyed farming and raising animals. Uncle John loved having family and friends around him, that’s why he hosted an annual pig roast to bring them closer together. The family would like to thank his caregivers for giving him the quality of life he so richly deserved. He is preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline Clark Messina in 1996, his brothers Harry, Joseph, Paul, Thomas and Charles Messina and his sister Rose Panepento.

He is survived by his sister Laura Baglio of Maryland, along with many nieces and nephews.

JOSEPH L. FILIO SR.

JOSEPH L. FILIO SR. - Age 77, of Batavia, died peacefully Tuesday morning February 11, 2014 at Unity Health System in Rochester. He was born October 31, 1936 in Caledonia, NY to the late Leonard and Lena (Corcimiglia) Filio, also preceded in death by his son, Scott Filio; brothers, Samuel and Leonard Filio Jr. and his sister, Patricia (late William) Biggins.

  Mr. Filio is a former Sergeant with the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, worked for MetLife and most recently served as a Town of Batavia Justice for 6 years. He was a United States Army Veteran and member of Resurrection Parish. Joe was an avid golfer, enjoyed trips to the casino and playing cards.

   He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Barbara (Biggins) Filio of Batavia; sons, Joseph L. Filio Jr. of Liverpool, NY and Todd Filio of Batavia; sisters, Carol (Larry) Hanley of Batavia, Barb (late John) Sharick of LeRoy; sisters-in-law, Angie and Sandy Filio both of LeRoy along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

LAWRENCE P. BROWN – Age 53, of Batavia died Wednesday January 8, 2014 at his home. He was born July 17, 1960 to Jack R. Brown of Williamsville and the late Loretta K. (Laney).

   Larry was engaged in the manufacturing of various items at his business, "Creative Design" located in the Batavia Industrial Center.

Joyce J. Shoup, 82 of Buffalo entered into eternal rest February 9, 2014. Joyce was the wife to the late Ernest Shoup.

Mr. & Mrs. Edward A. Hale

Mr. & Mrs. Edward A. Hale

Batavia - Mrs. Floreen M. Hale, 82, of Batavia, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Hale was born September 14, 1931 in Albion, a daughter of the late Mario and Sarah D'Orazio Papponetti.

A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Batavia, she was a graduate of Albion High School. Mrs. Hale was a telephone operator for Bell Atlantic Telephone in Batavia. She also worked at the former St. Jerome Hospital as a switchboard operator and was an active member of the St. Jerome Guild.

She was married to Edward A. Hale on May 12, 1953. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together.  He passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center.  Together, they enjoyed camping, talking long drives together but most of all spending time with their family in their home. Many of their winters were spent in their Florida Home.

She is survived by her children, Ricky (Joanni) Hale of East Bethany and Renee Hirsh of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Kyle Hirsh, Kevin (Macie) Hirsh and Keenan Hirsh, all of San Diego, California; her brother, Harry (Susan) Papponetti of Albion and Marleen (Richard) Fuller DeCarlo of Albion; and several nieces and nephews.

Batavia - Mr. Edward A. “Dizzy” Hale, 83, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center, hours after his wife Floreen passed.

Mr. Hale was born November 9, 1930 in Batavia, a son of the late Albert and Marie Rider Hale.

He was a graduate of Batavia High School, Ithaca College, Cornell University and Erie Institute of Technology. Mr. Hale was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church. He retired as the assistant city engineer for the City of Batavia in 1983.In addition; he consulted with the Town of LeRoy as an engineer for several years. He enjoyed watching sports and reading.

He is survived by his children, Ricky (Joanni) Hale of East Bethany and Renee Hirsh of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Kyle Hirsh, Kevin (Macie) Hirsh and Keenan Hirsh, all of San Diego, California; his sister, Marilyn Winegar of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

He is the brother of the late William Hale and Betty Hale Smith.

Calling hours for Mr. & Mrs. Hale will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where a prayer service will be recited at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Their Mass of Christian Burial will follow the prayer service at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Thursday at St. Mary's Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia.  Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Albion. Thomas H. Dixon

Thomas H. Dixon, age 60, died on Sunday February 9, 2014 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. He was born in Warsaw, New York on October 16, 1953 a son of the late Thomas M. and Elma Lois Souci Dixon. Tom was a graduate of Letchworth Central School class of 1971 and a graduate of Monroe County Community College in Rochester. He worked several years for Morton Salt Co. in Silver Springs before becoming a correctional officer, he retired in 2010 from Attica State Correctional Facility in Attica. In 2005 he received an honor from the New York State Bar Association for outstanding contributions in the field of corrections.

He was also a part time school bus driver and was currently working for Wyoming Transit Service in Warsaw. He was a former Trustee and Mayor for the Village of Silver Springs, and was currently holding the position of Supervisor for the Town of Gainesville. He was a former Town of Gainesville tax assessor and American Red cross First Aid multi media and CPR instructor.

A 42 year member of the Silver Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad, where he held several positions including Vice President and President of the Fire Department, Wyoming County Republicans Committee and a Board member of the Wyoming County Community Action. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching his children and grandchildren during their sporting events, and will be remembered by many who knew him as Santa though out Wyoming County.

He is survived by his wife: Lynelle Kelly Dixon whom he married on May 31, 1975, a daughter Suzette (Jason Bush) Dixon of Hermitage, 2 sons: Matthew (Heather Van Epps) Dixon of Silver Springs, and Andee (Mary) Dixon of Mahwah, NJ, a daughter-in-law: Angela Akin of Perry, 3 grandchildren: Raeha Dixon, Dylan O’Brien, and Caeden Dixon, nieces and nephews: Danielle, Nicole, Bradley, Kellie and Aaron and close friends the Sands and Stewart families.

Sue Ann Hurlburt

Sue Ann Hurlburt, age 66, of Perry died on Sunday February 9, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born in Warsaw, New York on December 18, 1947 a daughter of the late Merle and Doris Page Smith. She was a graduate of Perry High School and Bryant and Stratton College in Rochester. She retired from SUNY Geneseo where she was a secretary in the financial aid department. She was an active member of the Perry Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Western New York Firemens Association. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack who died on January 15, 2014.

She is survived by a son: Todd Hurlburt of Perry, a sister: Karen (Kurt) Clemons of Richmond, Virginia, along with several nieces and nephews.

Raymond D. Schwab

Raymond D. Schwab, 89 of North Java, passed peacefully on Saturday February 8, 2014 at Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. He was born December 6, 1924 in North Java to the late John E. (Anna Seewaldt) Schwab. Ray was a lifelong resident of North Java. He and his late wife Rosemary owned and operated several businesses’s including a dairy farm, Ironwoods Hideaway Campground and Schwab’s Maple Products. Ray was a member of the North Java Fire Department for 69 years. Ray is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rosemary Schwab along with brothers and sisters.

Survived by two daughters Donna (Thomas) Grove of South Carolina; Julie (Justin) Hackett of North Java; son Ronald (Donna) Schwab of North Java; four grandchildren, Michael (Sarah) Hayden, Stephen (Andie) Mueller both of North Carolina; Elise (Eric Meyer) Hackett of Darien Center, Jason Hackett of North Java; three great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Delores “Dee” E. Diver

Batavia - Delores “Dee” E. Diver, 85 of Batavia, formerly of East Pembroke (Mogadore), passed away Saturday (February 8, 2014) at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Diver was born on March 9, 1928, in the Town of Alabama, NY, a daughter of the late Elva and Mary Storye Falker.

Dee and her late husband, Larry, were well known in the area as the owners/proprietors of Dee’s Diner at Brick House Corners for many, many years. She was the head cook at the diner. Before owning the diner, Mrs. Diver was a cook at Genesee Memorial Hospital and then at the Holiday House at the Pembroke rest area on the thruway. She was very active with the Boy Scouts and the Grange and helped to put on many of the dinners that they held. She was a member of the Indian Falls United Methodist Church. Dee was the wife of the late Lawrence “Larry” E. Diver, Sr., who passed away December 17, 2008. She was also predeceased by several brothers.

Surviving are three sons, Lawrence (Kathleen) Diver, Jr. of the Town of Pembroke, Mark (Linda) Diver of Waterford, Pa. and Gordon (late Debbie) Diver of Indian Falls; one daughter, Linda (Timothy) King of Indian Falls; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; one brother, Loren “Rip” Falker of Indian Falls; a brother-in-law, David (Bonnie) Diver and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Diver. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

There will be no prior visitation.  Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, East Pembroke. FRED P. SARACENI

FRED P. SARACENI - Age 90, of Batavia, died peacefully Thursday afternoon February 6, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. He was born March 9, 1923 in Batavia to the late Arthur and Amelia (Soccio) Saraceni, also preceded in death by his siblings, Jimmy, Thomas, Germaine, Mary, Beatrice & Betty.

Mr. Saraceni was a United States Army Veteran of WWII and a member of Resurrection Parish. He was employed for many years as a heavy equipment operator at Soccio & Dellapenna and also worked for the railroad and Agway of Batavia. He loved tending to his yard and garden, enjoyed riding his snowmobile and Sunday afternoon car rides. His joy was his wife, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years whom he married on Nov. 29, 1941 in St. Joseph's Church, Leroy, Josephine (Anzalone) Saraceni of Batavia; loving children, Alfred (Jane) Saraceni, Arthur Saraceni, Karen Woods all of Batavia, Amy (James) Thompson of FL and Germaine (Robert) Osborne of Oakfield; brother, Anthony "Red" (Marcie) Saraceni of Batavia; sisters, Fannie Copani of Caledonia, Yolanda (Harry) Bucceri of Oakfield, Ann (Ronald ) Penepent of Batavia and Roseanne (Donald) Showler of LeRoy; brother-in-law, Ross Anzalone of LeRoy; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins.

Dean E. Nichols, 85 of Bergen, died Thursday February 6, 2014 at his home surrounded by family. He was born April 6, 1928 in East Bethany to the late Floyd (Charlotte Adams) Nichols. Mr. Nichols was a United States Army Veteran. He worked for many years at Trojan in Batavia and was a member of Stone Church Presbyterian. He is preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy J. Nichols.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his beloved wife Jeanne E. (Callan) Nichols of Bergen; sons Robert D. (Lisa) of Riga; Douglas F. (Martha) of Stafford; daughter Barbara J. of Barker; step children Edward (Barbara) of Batavia; James (Mary Jean) of IL; Laura (Patrick) of Bennington; David (Mary), Charles (Maria), Timothy all of Batavia; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

CAROLYN J. CECERE

CAROLYN J. CECERE – Age 62, of Brockport died Tuesday January 21, 2014 at the East Side Nursing Home in Warsaw. She was born November 25, 1951 in Batavia, NY to the late Edward and Julia (Rossi) Spink.

   Carolyn was formerly employed at Rochester Orthopedics, was very artistically talented, enjoyed the History Channel, roses and had a great love for her grandchildren.

   Surviving is her loving daughter, Jacqueline Cecere and her grandchildren, Tyler & Isabell Alwardt; step-father, Wyman Spink of LeRoy; brother, Edward (Ruth) Spink of Medina; sister, Delores (Brian) Laliberte of CT along with a niece, Courtney and nephew, Stephen.

   There is no prior visitation and funeral services will be held privately by the family. Memorials in Carolyn's memory be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia.

David H. Colton

David H. Colton, 72, of Akron, passed away Monday (February 3, 2014) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville.

He was born in Newfane, NY on March 31, 1941, a son of the late Leon and Elizabeth Barbas Colton.

David was a production worker for General Motors in Lockport prior to his retirement.  He was a member of the WNY 2 Cylinder Club, WNY Gas & Steam Assoc. and enjoyed woodworking and John Deere Tractors.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends whom he loved spending time with.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Judy Fiegel Colton of Akron. Two daughters, Kelly Colton of Akron and Keri (Kelly) Page of East Bethany.  Two grandchildren, Garrett Page and Lydia Page of East Bethany.  Three sisters, Naomi (late Bud) Hulme of Buffalo, Betty (late Alphonso) Killion of Lockport and Virginia (late Kenneth) Swan of Lockport.  Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his foster parents, Karl and Aleda Kruse and several brothers and sisters.

Mari Elan Buszka

Mari Elan Buszka, 80, of Batavia, passed away Monday (February 3, 2014) at her residence.

She was born July 14, 1933 in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late Konstanty and Clara Weglikowski Chrostowski.

Mari was a school teacher at Pioneer Central school in Arcade prior to her retirement. Mari was also a member of Resurrection Parish in Batavia

She is survived by her son, Jay Mario Buszka and a cousin, Carol (Kenneth) Fox of Clarence Center.

There will be no prior visitation.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be announced at a later date with interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Buffalo.

THOMAS P. BRZYSKI

THOMAS P. BRZYSKI – Age 67, of Batavia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday February 3, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born January 19, 1947 in Cheektowaga, NY, to the late Edward R. and Elma (Jordan) Brzyski.

   Mr. Brzyski is a US Air Force Veteran and was employed by Conrail for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching and antiqueing. A real sports enthusiast and New England Patriots fan.  

   Surviving is his beloved wife of 47 years, Maryan (Zielonka) Brzyski of Batavia; cherished daughters, Darlene (Christopher) Miller of Corfu and their children, Matthew (Laura), Amy (Kevin Schildwaster) & Morgan; Jody (Miguel Contreras-Pinto) Swable and their children, Sydney & Olivia of Rock Hill, SC; sisters, Linda (Larry) Gangler of Fillmore, NY and Michelle (Jeff) Kawa of Darien; great-grandson, Isaac along with many nieces and nephews.

   Family and friends may visit from 3-7 p.m. on Friday February 7, 2014 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where a Celebration of Thomas's Life will begin at 7:00 p.m. The family wishes memorial contributions to the James P.
