Carol Rogers (Stevens) of Oakfield, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2021 at age 88.

Carol was born in Batavia in 1932 to the late Karl and Gertrude Quartley Stevens.  

She attended SUNY Geneseo and worked for the US Gypsum Company, as well as being an ‘Avon Lady’ for over 30 years. She enjoyed her family, keeping in touch with friends, knitting and participating in craft shows with her husband Norm. They also enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States, in particular attending army reunions in various locations.  Carol enjoyed watching sports at all levels and was an ardent Buffalo Bills fan.

Carol is survived by her son Steven (Wendy Hartley), grandsons Ken Rogers of NC, Jack Rogers of Webster, Craig Rogers (Kjell) of Australia, Mike Rogers of NYC, and great grandson Gabe of Australia. Brothers-in-law Jim Rogers (Donna) and Ardell Gehman (Shirley).  As well as many other relatives and dear friends. Predeceased by her husband Norman and daughter-in-law Shari.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at a later time when it is safe to do so.

  William E. “Billy” LaVarnway, 73, of Attica passed away on Friday January 8, 2021 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo. Bill was born on December 14, 1947 to John and Mary LaVarnway in Auburn, NY and moved to Attica at age 2.

He Graduated from Attica Central High in 1965 and then from Auburn Community College with an Associated degree. He joined the US Navy for 6 years 1969-1975, serving as a Machinist Mate 1^st Class, working on many air craft carriers. His best day ever was September 5, 1976 when his daughter, Erin (Treya) Kurnik was born. Bill started working at Kodak and continued there for over 25 years. Bill enjoyed hunting, was an avid fly fisherman, made many of his own flies for the lures. He loved sports and was the Buffalo Bills No. 1 fan. His biggest loves were his many dogs he had, mostly Spaniels and Golden Retrievers. Many remember Bill walking his dogs through Attica, truly a dog’s best friend. He also carved walking sticks for waling in the woods with dog in tow. Bill loved to golf whenever he was able. He was an avid reader, a member of Stephen’s Memorial Library. He loved all genres of music; Classical, Celtic, Jazz, Rock n Roll, etc. He also loved movies, had quite a collection.

Bill suffered many years from Parkinson’s disease but still kept active till the disease took over. He last resided at Greenfield’s Assisted Living before he passed. A big thank you and appreciation goes to Greenfield’s building B Nursing staff, also to the Millard Fillmore 3^rd floor staff than made him comfortable his last week. Our Lord took him into his arms to end his suffering on January 8, 2021.

Billy is predeceased by his parents; John and Mary LaVarnway; nephews Joel LaVarnway, Joey Bailey, Mason Harris and Jake Johnson; niece Aubrey Kimmel and brother in law, Roger.

Bill is survived by his loving daughter; Erin Kurnik; 11 siblings Mary (Royal) Bailey, Suzanne Kimmel, John LaVarnway, David (Sue) LaVarnway, Michael (Maury) LaVarnway, Annette Pfaff, Kathy (Dennis) Klotz, Sheila (Tom) Thompson, Mark (Kathy) LaVarnway, Theresa (Jeff) Hume and Erin (Scott) Mast. He also has many nieces and nephews, many who will miss him, along with 4 cousins who reside in England with their growing families.

Sadly there will be no calling hours. There will be an 11:00AM Mass of Christian Burial held on Saturday January 16, 2021 at Sts. Joachim & Anne Church 50 East Ave. Attica, NY 14011.  He will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery.

  Doris M. Boyce, 95, of Le Roy, passed away Tuesday night, January 5, 2021, due to complications from Covid-19.  She was born April 14, 1925 in Batavia, the oldest child of the late Cecil and Mary (Linsler) Goodemote in Batavia, where she lived most of her life.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly fifty years, Olin R. Boyce, and her two brothers, Robert Goodemote of Erie, PA, and Edward Goodemote of Lakeland, FL.

Doris worked with her husband as the bookkeeper for his automotive repair business, Olin Boyce Auto Service, for more than twenty-five years.  Together they enjoyed socializing, with friends and family, especially their grandchildren, traveling, boating, camping, and ballroom dancing to the Big Band music of the forties.  Doris also pursued several hobbies, including gardening, needlecraft, and baking.  Throughout her life she was a fervent member of St. Joseph and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Churches.

She is survived by her sister, Marian (Walter) Lamka, of Summerville, SC, her children, Kathleen (William) Steinauer of Encinitas, CA, Patricia Hartley of Le Roy, and John (Linda) Boyce of Bergen, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church of Le Roy on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. EST.  The service will be live streamed on the parish website at www.ourladyofmercyleroy.org.  A Celebration of Life by her family and friends will be scheduled at a future date.  Interment will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery and Mausoleum in Batavia.

Wilson Covert – Born in Buffalo, NY on October 26, 1921, Wilson passed away on January 7, 2021 at the NYS Veterans Home in Batavia, NY.  He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joyce Brown Toal Covert and his beloved children and step-children:  Michael (Denyse) Covert of Punta Gorda, FL; Christine (Robert) Ralston of Springville, UT; James Covert of Williamsburg, VA; Linda Toal and Carolyn (Gary) Dawson of Batavia, NY; Kathleen (Randy) Alexander of Corfu, NY; Cynthia (Anthony) Lewandowski of Amherst, NY; Mark Covert of Riga, NY; Kevin (Pamela) Covert of Oakfield, NY; daughter-in-law and step daughter-in law Christie Covert of Laredo, TX;  Michelle Toal of Trenton, FL;  sister Joan “Pat” Moody of Kenmore, NY; 24 grandchildren and step grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.  Wilson is predeceased by his wife of 24 years, Dorothy Orendorf Covert, sons and step son John Covert, Andrew Covert and James A. Toal, daughters-in-law Deborah Covert and Lisa Covert; step grandson James W. Toal;  and brothers Eugene Covert and Harry Covert. He was the son of the late Harry and Elvera Wilson Covert.

Wilson was a proud WWII Navy Veteran and served in the Pacific Ocean Theatre on the USS Electra.  His strong sense of duty to country continued through the service of four sons, two sons-in-law, grandson, granddaughter-in-law, step granddaughter and step great-grandson in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National  Guard. Prior to his retirement, Wilson worked in IUOE Local 17 as a Crane Operator at Pine Hill Stone and Gravel in Lancaster for 25 years.
Wilson enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends, gardening and spending time outdoors. He was a master at whittling and his signature hand carved wooden ducks will be treasured throughout the generations of his family.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at the convenience of his family.  Memorials may be made to Western New York Heroes (wnyheroes.org).

Wendy  K.  Speagle, 48, of Bergen, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport.

Wendy was born May 17, 1972 in Batavia, a daughter of Rita (Hartman) Pfenninger of Lockport and the late Wayne Douglas Cayea, Sr.

Being a CNA, Wendy enjoyed taking care of the elderly and especially those patients with Alzheimer's.  She loved spending time with her family and was a call representative for the department of labor.

Surviving along with her mother are her children, Thomas (Kelsey Sanders) Mitchell of Youngsville, NC, Samantha Tate of Batavia and Troy Hubler, II of Lockport; brother, Wayne (Adrienne) Cayea of Medina; sister, Jessica Pfenninger of Batavia; three grandchildren, five nieces and five nephews.

Along with her father, Wendy is predeceased by her grandparents, George and Eleanor Hartman.   

Wendy's funeral services will be private.

LeRoy - Adriane  C.  Broadbooks, 93, formerly of Byron and Bergen, died Thursday, January 7, 2021 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

Mrs. Broadbooks was born on Sunday, March 20th, 1927 in Niagara Falls, a daughter of the late James Patrick Casey and Alida Van Esbroek Casey. 

Raised in Rochester, Adriane was a graduate of Houghton College. She taught for many years at the Rochester Christian School. In the summers, she would go to Peniel Bible Conference in the Adirondacks, where she volunteered in the kitchen.   

She married Herbert Broadbooks on February 11, 1972, and assisted in operating the family farm in Byron until retirement. After living a few years in California, they returned to western New York and lived in Bergen. Adriane was a member of the Christian Women's Club in Batavia and the Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder.

Survivors include a sister, Patricia Russell of Bergen; nieces, Karen (Michael) Thunell, Diane (Donald) Cunningham and Cindy (Dennis) Burke of Bergen, Christine (Thomas) Silburn of Lake Luzerne, Kathy Matthews of Oregon; nephews, Michael Russell of Hawaii and Danny Russell of South Dakota and several grand-nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Herbert; a brother and sisters. 

There are no prior visiting hours. Private graveside services will be held in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica. Robert E. Burey, of Darien Center, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his beloved wife of 64 years and his five children. He was born February 22, 1934, in Timmins Ontario to the late Goldy Latrielle and William George Burey.

Bob was an ARMY veteran and avid outdoorsman, who loved camping, canoeing, and fishing in the Adirondack Mountains with his wife or lifelong friend, Ed Jones. He enjoyed many seasons skiing at Honey Hill, Bluemont, and Swain, was the Attica High School ski club advisor, and was a volunteer ski patrolman. Bob also loved golfing with his Tuesday league and dear friend and golf partner, Ron Phillips. When not outdoors, Bob led a very full life pursuing many other ventures. He thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with a great group of fellow creative friends with the Attica Haunted House Association. He taught Art and Photography for 25 years at Attica High School, where many of his fellow teachers / students became close friends. Bob was also an active board member of the Attica Historical Society, Tonawanda Valley Federal Credit Union and the WNY Gas and Steam Engine Association.

Bob was hard working and devoted to his family and will be dearly missed. His is survived by his wife Sophie (Pinky) P. Burey (Winstel); children, Karen R. Prince, Susan L. Coulter, Patti G. Burey, Robert S. Burey and Brett M. Burey; 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and his dear sister, Marilyn (Babe) Hussla.

Batavia- Sedra Clare Stockton Hyde, age 82, of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

She was born on March 19, 1938, in Batavia, a daughter of the late Burton and Britta Bird Stockton.

Sedra had a beautiful smile that would light up a room as well as an unmistakable laugh. She had a special love for her Grandchildren & ALL Babies.

She married the love of her life Fred L. Hyde on March 23, 1957. Surviving along with her husband are her children; Tambra (Tammy) Hyde Kendall of Ft. Worth, Texas, Thomas (Laura) Hyde of Attica, Troy Hyde of Batavia and Teal (Marc) Langmaid of Byron; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother; Stefan (Judy) Stockton; brother-in-law; Ralph Hyde; sister-in-law; Joanne Hyde and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her infant grandson, Thomas Hyde Jr., father-in-law and mother-in-law; Fred L. Hyde, Sr. and Mildred Chandler Hyde; brothers-in-law; Charles Kuehl, Richard Hyde, and William Reiss and her sisters-in-law; Juanita Hyde, Joyce Kuehl, and Marjorie Reiss.

Sedra's Lifelong Best Friend Beverly McAllister was with her at LeRoy Village Green and they passed away 9 days apart with Beverly passing on December 28, 2020. They were together until the end & they are now together in Heaven.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia where services will immediately follow visitation.   James D. Orr, 75, of Alexander, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 3, 1945 in Buffalo, NY to the late James (Ethlyn Drake) Orr. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Hyer, Judi Cross, Eve McAlister; a brother, John Orr; and a granddaughter, Tara Parsons.

Jim moved to Genesee County at a young age and remained a lifelong resident.  After brief stints as a farmer and factory worker, he was hired as a Deputy Sheriff with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, a job he both excelled at and loved.  He was one of the first recipients of the Carl Draxler Award, a statewide award recognizing excellence in the performance of his duties as a New York State deputy sheriff.  Prior to his retirement in 1993, he rose to the rank of Chief Deputy, the highest non-elected rank in the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, and made many lifelong friends throughout the county. 

During his time with the Sheriff’s Department, Jim undertook extensive training in the reconstruction of motor vehicle accidents.  Many local members of law enforcement received training from him in this field.  Following his retirement from law enforcement, he worked throughout the remainder of his life as a consultant hired to reconstruct motor vehicle accidents in both the private and public sectors.  Near the end of his life, he returned to public service and was elected Town Justice in the Town of Alexander, a position he held until he again retired in October of 2020.

In both his various careers and his personal life, Jim was known for treating people with honesty, fairness and respect.  To his family, he was a steady, reliable presence who could always be turned to for help with problems both big and small.  He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 42 years and a true role model for his children and their offspring.  He will be greatly missed by both several generations of family members and many others who thought of him as family.         

He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Orr (Hewitt) of Alexander; children Christine Orr of North Tonawanda; James (Nancy) Orr of Akron; Michael (Gael) Orr of Conesus; Heather (Gregory) Robinson of Stafford, Brett (Sarah) Orr of Alexander; brother Charles (Millie) Orr of Washington; sisters Janice (Lowell) Durant of Potsdam; Patricia (Ed) Ewert of Batavia; Becky (Joseph) Rangel of Idaho; Cindy (Anthony) Gennoe of Tennessee; grandchildren Ashlee Kenyon, Alexis Kenyon, Emmaleigh Odom, Jay Armstrong, Kaiel Robinson, Sarah Orr, Drake Orr, and Clyde Orr; great-grandchildren Cuylar West, Avalyn Carubia, Noah West, Donavin Hilton and Kashius Hilton; along with several nieces and nephews.

No Memorial Service will be held at this time due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus.  A Celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.

  Celia Klein, 94, of Batavia, passed away due to complications from COViD-19 on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. She was born August 3, 1926 in Batavia, to the late Angelo (Angeline Tizzano) DiLaura. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Donald Klein, sisters, Mary DiLaura, Lena (Dominic) Cutitta; brothers, Thomas (Rose) Minuto, Frank (Josephine) Minuto, Joseph, James and Angelo (Beverly) DiLaura; in-laws, Ceil and Jack Zackey, Jeanne and James Redivivo, Margaret and Pat Radice, Henrietta Ingebrech, Eileen and Roland Amedick, Helen and Donald Zorn, Neil Klein, Richard Miller, Paul, Robert, Edward, Joseph and Dorothy Klein.

Celia was most known for her generosity of spirit. Her door was open for anyone. Our large family enjoyed the Memorial Day and Fourth of July picnics she held. She maintained beautiful gardens, enjoyed reading, music and of course her visits to many casinos. Mom worked hard for St. Mary’s and Notre Dame. Her many nieces and nephews always enjoyed her company.

She is survived by her children, Margaret (James) Brady, John Klein, Donald (Joellen) Klein. She was a doting grandmother to Regina Conte, Beth (Alfred) Clark, Philip (Susan) Klein, John (Ashley) Klein, Tyler (Kara) Klein. She was so proud of her great-grandchildren, Silvauno Sykes, Ethan and Makayla Clark, Karter and Tessa Rose Klein.

The family would like to thank the staff at Le Roy Village Green for their care and affection for mom and our family.  

Due to COViD-19 restraints, her burial will be private. The family will plan a Celebration of her Life in the summer. She will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia

Gerald E. Schwab, 83 of Sheldon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born at home in Sheldon, on May 20, 1937 to the late Edward (Pauline Hanley) Schwab. He is preceded in death by siblings, Norma (William) Marzolf, Herbert (Arlene) Schwab, Carl (Doris) Schwab, Leon (Cecilia) Schwab, Rosalyn (Leo) Bartz, Theresa (Al) Dominessy, granddaughter Hope Geiger, sister-in-law Wanda Schwab.   

Mr. Schwab was a 3^rd generation dairy farmer; member of Upstate Milk, retired from farming in 1987 and went on to work at Darien Lake doing RV maintenance before working at and retiring from Buffalo RV. He was a life member of Sheldon Fire Department and member of WNY Gas & Steam Engine Association. Jerry Built and maintained the family “pond & getaway”, he loved spending time with his family.

Mr. Schwab is survived by his beloved wife Kathleen A. (Rautenstrauch) Schwab, children, Mark (Karen) Schwab, Nancy (Dave) Meyer, Daniel (Deanna) Schwab, AnnMarie (Douglas) Geiger; siblings, Donald Schwab, Harold (Margaret) Schwab, 9 grandchildren, 3 ½ great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Audrey  J.  (Brown) Fay, 87, of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

Audrey was born October 9, 1933, in East Bethany, a daughter of the late Howard and Winifred (Carlson) Brown.

Audrey was a greeter at Walmart in Batavia, loved being with her family and was a New York Yankees and Miami Dolphins fan.

Surviving are her daughters, Lori (Raymond) Luzier of California, Patricia (Lawrence) Cassatt of Elba and Sandra (Robert) Tunningley of Henrietta; a sister, Marilyn (late Merlin) Kirch of Kansas; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  

Audrey is the wife of the late Richard Fay.

Services will be held at a later date in East Bethany Cemetery.

Batavia - Frederick  G.  Facer, 96 of Batavia passed away on Wednesday, (January 6, 2021) at New York State Veterans Home in Batavia.

Mr. Facer was born  February 10, 1924 in Rochester, a son of the late Claude and Carolyn (Schlageter) Facer.

Fred was a member of Resurrection Parish. He served the country honorably with the US Army during World War II. He took part in the D-Day Campaign and was with the Quartermaster Corps. under General Patton. He was a 65 year member of Local #276 in Rochester and was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. He also enjoyed gardening.

Frederick is the husband of the late Priscilla (Hottois) Facer.

Surviving are his children, Kathleen M. Facer of Batavia, Cheryl A. (Richard) Price of Maryland, Michael J. (Kim Jin Kyeong) Facer of Oregon, and James P. Facer of Delaware; a brother, Francis Facer of Ithaca. 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Facer is preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Facer.

There will be no visitation. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Batavia. John “Brad” Stangrover, 90 of Cowlesville, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo. He was born September 3, 1930 in Cowlesville to the late George F. (Frances Vinning) Stangrover. He is preceded in death by a brother George Stangrover and step-son Ernest Carney.

Mr. Stangrover is a United States Navy Veteran who proudly served his country. He owned and operated the Tipperary in Attica with his wife Lena Belle.

He is survived by his wife Lena Belle (Bailey) Stangrover of Cowlesville, step-sons, Richard (Doreen) Carney of Bennington, Donald (Maria) Carney of Stroudsburg, PA, Garry (Lori) Carney of Windgap, PA, Gregory (Renee) Carney of Ohio, sister Jean Foster of AZ, brother Graham Stangrover of CA, 22 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours, a Celebration of Life will be determined for a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions. He will be laid to rest in Cowlesville Cemetery.

Leslie "Duke" Tash , 83, of Batavia went to be the with our Lord on December, 30, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on May 22, 1937 in Batavia to the late Dayton & Dorothy Tash.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Shirley (Leffel) Tash in 2019.

He served in the US Marine Corp as Special Agent Counterintelligence- Admin Chief from 1954 to 1974, serving 5 tours in Vietnam. The awards earned from his service include Vietnam Service Medal w/5 Bronze Stars, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Unit Award of the Gallantry Cross w/frame & palm, Good Conduct Medal w/5 Bronze stars, Combat Action Ribbon, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. He spent the next 10 years in the Reserves.

He is survived by his children, Cheryl MeEwan (D. Bruce Becking) of Medina, Lori Tash of Byron, Christy (Tom) Scheuing of LeRoy, Colleen Tash of LeRoy, Lori Gere of Batavia, Karin Leffel of Corfu and Steven Leffel of Corfu, 7 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

He was a lifelong member of the Stafford Fire Department.  In his earlier years he was an avid bowler, loved wood working and was a NASCAR fan.
