Jack O. Hillabush Jr., died peacefully Sunday after a long illness.  Jack was a contracting carpenter for almost 40 years in Elba and the surrounding area.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and boating.  He had many close friends who he loved to spend time with.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Beverly Speed Hillabush; his two sons, Michael A. Butler of Elba and Peter C. (Katie) Butler of Maryland; a daughter-in-law, Kim Butler of Oakfield; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Diana (Danny) Campbell of Clarendon and Donna (Scott) Capamaggio of North Carolina; four brothers, Greg (Donna) Hillabush of Elba, Jeff (Sharon) Hillabush of Albion, Ray (Diann) Hillabush of Clarendon and Mark (Cynthia) Hillabush of Rochester; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Speed Schultz of Elba and Jeanette Speed Grazioplene of Batavia and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack is predeceased by his mother and father, Doris and Jack Hillabush Sr., daughter-in-law, Debra Nichols Butler, son, Thomas S. Butler, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Virginia and Kenneth Mullen, brothers-in-law, Roger Speed, William Schultz and Gerald Grazioplene.

Calling hours are Thursday, November 10, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia.  Jack's funeral will be held on Friday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elba Presbyterian Church, 23 North Main Street, Elba.  He will be laid to rest in Maplelawn Cemetery in Elba.

Karl L. Meyers, 62 of Attica, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at his home in Attica. He was born May 27, 1960 in Buffalo, to the late Charles and Lee (Sobottka) Meyers. He is predeceased by his sister, Barbara Smithson and his brother, Bruce Meyers.

Karl enjoyed a simple life and could most often be found enjoying the outdoors, or chatting with friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Gwendlyn Meyers of Collinsville, TX, son Michael (Kayleigh) Meyers of Darien Center, NY, sisters, Diane (David) Meyer, Charlene Meyers, Kathy (Jim) Hakes, Karen (Bruce) Budney, Alicia (Russ) Spanitz, brother, Dan (Carol Rey) Meyers, grandchildren, Oaklyn and Brodie, along with many nieces and nephews.

Arthur M. Schmidt, 72 of Lockport, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening (November 3, 2022) at his residence under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice.

He was born September 8, 1950 in East Stroudsburg, PA, a son of the late Arthur F.P. Schmidt and Anne Smith Wilhem.

Art was an underwater commercial diver and was the C.E.O. of his company, Underwater Consultants International, Inc for many years. He loved everything fast. Fast cars and fast motorcycles. His dream was to travel the country and race his street car. He was a lover of food and enjoyed cooking and generously taking out family and friends to fine dining establishments. Art will be missed by all who knew his caring ways.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Kress Schmidt of Lockport. Son, Art Jr. (Ann) Schmidt of Wind Gap, PA. Step-children, Sue (Chad) Rudolph of Batavia, Jody (Dan) Miles of Batavia, Ken Matthies of Akron and Faith (Chris) Milhollen of Akron. Grandchildren, Savannah, Brielle Schmidt, Hunter Miles, Grace Rudolph, Brooke Milhollen, Darel Matthies and Henry Matthies.

  Mary Josephine "Mary Jo" (Perry) Dumuhosky passed away peacefully at her home on November 2^nd, 2022 after a short illness. Mary Jo was born April 3rd 1953 in Batavia to Sam and Marie (Torcello) Perry. 

She was a 1971 graduate of Batavia High School graduate, a 1973 graduate of Genesee Community College and a 1991 graduate of SUNY Brockport.  Following her graduation from GCC in 1973 she was an adored academic advisor at Genesee Community College for over 30 years, helping numerous students choose their career paths until her retirement in 2017.   During her years of service Mary Jo earned the SUNY Chancellor's award for excellence in professional service in 2012.  She was also a Notary Public.  

Mary Jo was active in her community belonging to multiple organizations including the St. Jerome's Guild, Resurrection Parish, the Paolo Busti Cultural Foundation, Friends of the Batavia Peace Garden, and the International Peace Garden Foundation. When she wasn't spending time with beloved family or feeding the slots at Batavia Downs, she volunteered, working for the gift shop at St. Jerome's and spending time with friends on the Thursday Night Golf League at Meadowbrook Golf Course and the GCC retirees group.  

She is predeceased by her husband of 31 years Mark Dumuhosky and parents Sam and Marie Perry. She is survived by her brother Ross Perry of Batavia; Daughter Lisa Dumuhosky (Carl Gieseler) of Batavia, Son Matthew (Laura) Dumuhosky of LeRoy; Grandchildren Kelli, Estelle & Lenore Dumuhosky along with many, many other family, friends and fairy godchildren.

  Pamela A. Truax, 84, of Byron passed away peacefully on Thursday November 3, 2022 at Crossroads House in Batavia. She was born on May 9, 1938 in Olean to the late Joseph and Eleanor (Rose) Weinman. She is also predeceased by her sister; Linda Weinman; grandsons Luke and Steele Truax.

Pam was a member of the Byron Rescue Squad for many years.

She has left behind her husband of 42 years; Milford Truax; children Stan (Vicky) Truax of Bergen, Kim (Jerry) Pospychalla and Shane (Erica) Truax; Melissa Truax and Christopher Truax; sister Jerry Sue and brothers Tom and Charlie Weinman, along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. A 4:00PM Celebration of Life will be held on Friday November 11, 2022 at the Byron Fire Hall 6357 Townline Rd. Byron, NY 14422. She will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.

Mark David Post, 60, of San Diego, CA passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2022. He was born December 25, 1961 - a Christmas baby at Genesee Memorial Hospital. He was a 1980 graduate of Alexander Central School and attended Genesee Community College, as well as Geneseo State College. Mark moved to California 36 years ago. His hard work and initiative spurred on a decades-long career of managing multiple apartment complexes, culminating in the recent purchase and ownership of the Caravan Apartments in San Diego. He lived his life surrounded by a community of friends where his generosity was always on full display. He was known for his big heart, his desire to have a good time, and his willingness to make a difference in the lives of so many. Mark enjoyed playing the piano, trips to Las Vegas, and hosting big holiday-themed parties. He is survived by his parents David and Nancy Post, sisters Shari (Jim) Otis, and Wendy (Lorenzo) Peshlakai, brother Bob (Deb) Post, five nieces and nephews, and five grand-nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service is planned for November 12th at 11am - The First Presbyterian Church, located at 300 East Main Street, Batavia, NY 14020. The family is requesting donations be made in Mark’s honor to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

 Gerald Maley, age 92, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2022.

Gerry was born on May 23, 1930 in Batavia, the son of the late John and Helena Lippold Maley. Following his 1948 high school graduation, he played professional baseball for teams in Batavia and Olean, New York. He was inducted into the Batavia High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. Following Gerry’s baseball career, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. When he returned to civilian life he worked as a lineman and switchman for Niagara Mohawk for 37 years.

He was very community minded and an active member of the American Legion, Batavia Lion’s Club, Niagara Mohawk Pensioners Club, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and a long time usher at St. Mary’s Church. He also served as Vice President and Director of the Batavia Clippers and Muckdogs Baseball Clubs.

Gerry is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years; Dorothy; his parents John and Helena Maley; brother Edward Maley and sister Regina Perkowski.

Gerry is survived by his children; Barbara (Penn) Pixley, Douglas (Sharon) Maley, William Maley and Janice Maley; grandchildren Brian (Meghan) Pixley, Jennifer (Anthony) Ortiz, Juliana (Joseph) Chahine, Alexandria (Joshua) Muller, Victoria (Eric) Wing and Daniel Maley; great-grandchildren Caroline, Luke, Cole and Madelyn Pixley, Arthur Ortiz and Elias Chahine; sister Donna (Jim) West, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Bergen - Michele Worden , 60  of Bergen  passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022, after a long battle with cancer, at Highland Hospital in Rochester, New York.

Michele was born Monday, July 16th, 1962 in Rochester, NY a daughter of the late Michael Fleming Sr. and Judy Fleming. She graduated from Byron-Bergen Central School and later married the love of her life Wayne Worden. She was a fantastic mother to her four children and loved her grandchildren. Michele dedicated her life to helping others as a Nurse's Aide at Premier Genesee Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She enjoyed crocheting gifts for family and friends, loved animals, spent her life caring for people, and dedicated time to sending out uplifting posts on facebook. As a friend Michele was fierce and loyal, she would always stand by your side. 

Michele is survived by her mother Judy Fleming; three sons, Cory Worden, of Bergen, Kevin Worden, of Bergen, and Kyle (Katrina) Worden, of Honeoye Falls; grandchildren, Eithan, Kellsie, and Haylee Worden, of Rome; Siblings, Ron (Barb) Conrad, of Wayland, Tom (Kim) Fleming, of Brockport, Bob (Joanne) Fleming, of LeRoy, Mike (Mariann) Fleming, of Bergen, and many nieces and nephews.

Michele is reunited in death with her husband, Wayne Worden; father, Michael Fleming Sr., and her daughter Kristie Stack.

Byron ~ Jeanne Avis Moultrup Freeman, age 76, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon (October 30, 2022) in the loving presence of her family.

  

   She was born August 26, 1946 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Paul and Mildred Bohadlo Moultrup.

     Jeanne will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend, who wore many “hats”.  She worked as a 4 H secretary, a stay at home mom, which coincided with making wedding cakes and finally serving as the Byron Town Clerk from 1985 – 2005 before retiring.

     She was a lifelong seamstress, a photographer, enjoyed scrapbooking, gardening, snowmobiling, watching her daughters show horses, a 4 H leader and a member of the Byron Historical Society.  Above all, she was a car enthusiast at heart.  She and her husband, Bill, would travel to car cruises and shows with her prized possessions; her 1970 Mach I Mustang and her 2002 Mustang GT.  

     Jeanne married the love of her life, William Kent Freeman in 1965 and they shared their home in Byron for 57 years.  In addition to her husband, Bill, she is survived by her daughters, Melissa A. (Brian) Sheard and Debra L. Freeman Baris (Ron Coniber); grandchildren, Brent Sheard (Lauren Williams), Alianna Baris and Camden Baris; sister, Donna (Cliff) Harper of OH and their son, Steve (Susan) Harper and children, Sophie and Hayden of TX; brother-in-law, Mike Smith of NC and his daughter, Michelle (Mike) Childers and children, Jayden and Sabastian, along with many dear friends.

     In addition to her parents, Jeanne was predeceased by her sister, Eileen Smith and nephew, Jason Smith.

Walter John Gavenda, Jr, 81, of Annandale, Virginia, passed away on October 26, 2022 in Fairfax, Virginia.

Walt was born in Buffalo, a son of Walter and Rose Gavenda on October 15, 1941.

He graduated from Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University in 1963. He worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for 33 years. His career included two overseas assignments in East Asia and while serving in the Washington Metropolitan area he reviewed and declassified Project Stargate. Following his retirement from the CIA, Walt served as a researcher with a newly formed company, Courage Services, which supported clients in the national security sector.

Following his ultimate retirement, Walt pursued his main passions, writing, researching history and the study of the paranormal. His book A Guide to Haunted West Virginia became a regional best seller.

Walt is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Rose Gavenda, his nephew Thomas Gavenda, and his sister-in-law Ann Gavenda.

Walt is survived by his brother Donald Gavenda of Elba, his niece and three nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 31 at St Ambrose Church, Annandale, VA with the Fr. Rampino of officiating.

Larry Gaylard Hill, age 65, of the Town of Shelby, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 27, 2022.

Larry was born on May 17, 1957 in Medina, NY to parents H. Gaylard Hill and Gladys (Bruning) Hill. He graduated from Medina High School in 1975. He married Michele R. Boyle in 1982.

Larry was an accomplished mechanic who started his career at Lisle and Ricker working on International Harvester farm equipment. Shortly after Lisle and Ricker closed, Larry took on a full-time position at Keeler Construction in Albion, where he dedicated himself for the next 45 years.

He was a devoted husband and father who loved his family and friends. He would often be found at home or on a farm wrenching away on equipment. He was passionate about helping others whenever he could. On Sundays, Larry and Michele loved having breakfast out at the local restaurants. Afterwards, Larry loved to drive around and tour the countryside looking at equipment and taking note of everything that had changed. He was very knowledgeable about many topics, always having a thought or an answer when in discussion. He was known to be able to recite the extended genealogy of practically any family.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Michele Hill; and son, Christopher G. (Katie J. (Graton)) Hill; two grandchildren, Byron G. Hill and Joshua J. Hill. He is also survived by his sister, Judy. He is preceded in death by his parents, H. Gaylard and Gladys Hill.

Darlene S. Sztaba, 75, of Bergen, New York, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2022 surrounded by her family.  

     Darlene was born on February 28, 1947, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to June Dakins and James L. Syms.  She was one of six siblings: Lawrence “Butch” Syms, Fred “Stubby” (Terri) Syms, Rick (Sandy) Syms, Mike (Dianne) Syms, and Nancy (Dennis) Blagg.  Darlene moved to New York State in 1967, married and started a family. Darlene retired from Byron-Bergen Central School where she worked first as a cafeteria worker and then a custodian.  She loved her job and working with the many wonderful people at the school.

  

   The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Darlene.  Her love for her family was unparalleled, equalled only by her overwhelming love of the game Yahtzee.  She never went anywhere without it and happily destroyed any Yahtzee amateur that challenged her.  She was also an avid fisherwoman and felt at home being on the peacefulness of the water.  Originally  from Wisconsin, Darlene was very passionate about all things Wisconsin.  She faithfully cheered on her Green Bay Packers both in the brightest and darkest of times.  Perhaps being a native of Wisconsin and a lifelong cheesehead brought out her love for a great grilled cheese sandwich or two! She loved her time spent in Rhinelander, Wisconsin visiting family, fishing, and making memories.  She was most at  peace visiting the stone cottage on the Wisconsin River.  She also fancied a piece or two of grape pie.  She loved taking her excursion out in search of the best pie, which of course was always Monica’s Pies.  Darlene was an avid crafter and enjoyed expressing her creativity through her many projects that she created.  She loved crocheting towels for everyone she knew.  She was also a devoted fan of Days of Our Lives and hated to miss an episode.  Darlene could best be described as both sassy and genuinely kind-hearted.  She was a friend to all and always wanted to help others.  Her witty nature and great one liners kept us all on our toes up to the very end.  Her stubbornness was her greatest asset at times.  It was the way in which she lived, on her terms and in her own way.

     Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and son, Matthew Charles Staba.  She is survived by her companion, Dennis Walker; her children: James (Susan) Staba, Roxanne (Peter) Coleman, and Melissa (Randal) Staba-Busch; her grandchildren: Tyler Murtha, Courtney (Eric) Hyde, Rayleigh Staba (Joe Brown), Kyle Coleman, Caleb Busch, Jamie (Spencer) Thomas, and Zander Staba.

     As per Darlene’s request, her immediate family will be celebrating her life privately.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Christopher Michael Robinson, formerly of Ramona, Calif., and most recently a resident of Darien Center, N.Y., after a brief but brave battle with cancer.

Gail and Michael Robinson were living in Ramona, Calif., when they welcomed their firstborn child, Chris, on Jan. 25, 1974.

Chris lived in Ramona throughout his childhood, attending Cornerstone Christian School in Poway and graduating from Ramona High School in 1974. He enjoyed getting together with his grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins. Some of his favorite past times were hunting, fishing, and vacationing with his family.

He met Sandie Barbaritz, the love of his life, and they were married on March 22, 2003, making their home in Ramona and adding to their family with the births of Maddie and Noah. In 2014, they made the move to New York, where Sandie was raised.

Chris was devoted to his wife and children, and his greatest joy was being with them and cheering them on in sports and other interests.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gail Robinson (Williams). He is survived by his beloved wife, SandraLee “Sandie” (Barbaritz); children, Madalyn “Maddie” and Noah; father, Michael Robinson; and sister, Joetta “Jodi” Williams (Robinson); and many family members and friends who will miss him greatly.

Batavia - Robert  (Bob) Louis  Racine , 67  of Batavia  passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, New York.

Mr. Racine was born Monday, April 4th, 1955 in Buffalo, New York a son of the late Robert Racine and Florence (Kornichuck) Racine. He enjoyed  his work as a paid volunteer for the Wyoming County SPCA.

Bob liked working with cows of the farm and fishing. He had a passion for taking care of animals and loved his dog, Zena.  

Surviving is his companion, Patricia Dibble, of Batavia; his son Robert "Bob" Racine Jr., of Arizona, and many siblings. 

In death Bob is reunited with his parents, Robert and Florence Racine, and 3 of his siblings.

Bob's committal service will be on Monday, October 31, 2022 at 10:00am at St. Joseph's cemetery with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Jude's Hospital.
