Obituaries

Roy J. Muntz, 92 of Oakfield, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. He was the son of the late Norman and Flora Muntz of Corfu. He was preceded in death by his sisters Eleanore Hazel and Gladys Hartrick, a half brother Ernest Coots,  his daughter Kathy Vandeusen and grandson Jeffrey Muntz. 

Roy is survived by his wife of almost 73 years Evelyn and their children: Janet Kruszelnicki (John), Carol Muntz (Mark Cross), Roy Muntz Jr (Shelly), Ronald Muntz (Debbie), Betty Vandersypen (John), Dennis Muntz (Kelly), Sandra Muntz,  Ricky Muntz (Marina Zarco). Also 30 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren (we are told two more on the way), 5 great great grandchildren, his sisters Linda Bowman, Dorothy Plowe, Shirley Muntz and many, many nieces and nephews.

Roy was born at home on his parents farm in Corfu, NY on February 27, 1931, and spent much of his life working on them. He worked over 41 years at the US Gypsum. After retirement he stayed active cutting and splitting his own firewood and helping family on their farms. He enjoyed going for drives with Evelyn to eat out or visit family. He kept up with and shared all the latest gossip, if you needed to know something,  you just asked Roy. While he never made it to Florida or laid on a sandy beach, as anyone that visited them knows, it always felt like bikini weather inside with their woodstove going year round.

Richard John Hagen, 92 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Monday (December 18, 2023) at the New York State Veterans Home at Batavia. He was born June 14th, 1931 in Batavia NY, son of Stanley and Ellen Saunders Hagen. He was one of three children, brother and twin Donald Hagen and sister Nancy Hagen.

He graduated from Batavia High in 1949. Of many occupations Richard went on to join the Army National Guard for which he served a total of 39 years retiring as a warrant officer in 1989. Richard also worked for Massey Harris and Graham Manufacturing.

Richard was always strong in his faith as a boy serving as an acolyte at St. James Episcopal church, attended and drove the church bus at Calvary Baptist Church and a member of Pembroke Community Church.

Richard or better known as Dick was married three times. Leah (Liane) Hagen Kabel, Hazel Hagen and Lola Hagen. Richard had 3 children with Leah, David John Hagen, Michael Edwin Hagen and Sharon Hagen. Grandchildren from David are Jason Hagen, Josh Hagen, Jared Hagen, Courtney Hagen and Troy Hagen with great-grandchildren totaling 6. Grandchildren from Michael are Lerah Hagen, Wyatt Hagen and Justin Hagen. Grandchildren from Sharon are Becki Jackson Lindow and Nathaniel Jackson with 6 great grandchildren and 3 on the way.

Richard's second marriage to Hazel bore 2 children, Randolph Mark Hagen and Richard John Hagen Jr.. Grandchildren from Randolph are Nicole Irene Hagen Dickey and Jacob Riley Hagen with great grandchildren totaling 2. Grandchildren from Richard Jr. are Derek Hagen, Jordan Hagen, Mariah Hagen and Erica Naylor Frith. Great grandchildren from Mariah and Erica total 5 with 1 great-great grandchild. Richard also had several Step children, Patricia Smith, Phyllis Seager, Albert Hottois, Ed Hensel, Pat Hensel Rogers and Debra Stringham who loved him and he loved dearly.

Services will be held at J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave. Batavia New York, Friday, January 12th at 12:00PM with the burial service Saturday January 13^th, 11:00am at the Elmwood Cemetery 123 Harvester Ave, Batavia, New York.

Clara E. Hill, 87, of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Clara was born on March 16, 1936, in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Russell and Ruby Snyder Hill. She was a member of the Hawk Clan.

Clara worked for Genesee County Department of Social Services for over 30 years. She was the permanent Clerk of Six Nations Agricultural Society and Treasurer of the Peter Doctor Memorial Scholarship Fund. 

Clara loved to travel after her retirement and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, bowling and going out to eat with family and friends.

Clara is survived by several cousins.

Friends may call Friday, January 5, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 E. Main Street, Corfu, NY. Funeral services will be held from the mortuary on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1 PM. Burial will be in the Baptist Church Cemetery, Basom, NY.

Attica - Carrie A. Snyder, 46 of Attica passed away on Monday, (January 1, 2024) surrounded by her family.

Ms. Snyder was born November 7, 1977 in Springville, a daughter of  Michael Conrad of Attica and Christene (C. Scott) Elliott of Caneadea.

Carrie was a paralegal for many years before going back to school. With a drive to better herself and others, she earned an Associates Degree in nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse at United Memorial Medical Center. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and painting. Most of all, she adored and cherished her daughters.

Along with her parents, Carrie is survived by her significant other, Rick Kingdon of Attica; daughters, Elly Snyder of Rochester, and Leah Snyder of Attica; brother, Jason Conrad of Bennington; sister, Jessica Welker of Attica; nieces and nephews, Amanda, Joshua, Erika Conrad, and Evan Welker. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends also survive.

Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday (January 5, 2024) at Robinson and Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 North Main Street in Warsaw, where Carrie's memorial service will immediately follow at 6:00 p.m.

Charles L. Kellogg, 91, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2023.

Born on July14, 1932 in Buffalo, NY, to the late Charles E. and Emily (nee Schlagenhauf) Kellogg,

Charles is survived by Dorothy (nee Siebert), his beloved wife of 44 years; his children Kevin and Wendy (Dean), and by four step-children--James Starkweather (Kathleen), Kathy George (Mark), Sharon Laskett (James) and John Starkweather (Traci). Charles leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Ruth Pickert (William) of Batavia, his sister Shirley McGowan (Duane) of Lockport, and his sister Joan Oliveria (Ponzi) of Batavia. The family will miss him dearly.

Charles (“Chuck”) earned his bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland and a master’s degree in Education from SUNY Brockport. He proudly served in the US Army from 1954-1956. He was a
physical education teacher in the Pembroke, Fredonia and Attica school districts until his retirement in 1993. He coached successful teams in high school basketball, wrestling and golf.
An avid golfer himself, with a handicap of 5, he shot 4 holes-in-one over his playing career and won the Attica Golf Club championship in 1973 and 1974. He provided golf lessons for dozens of young people and adults across the western NY region. With Dorothy, Charles devoted time and energy in service as members of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Attica, NY. They
loved dancing to big band and country music, golfing, and socializing with other snowbird friends each winter in Palmetto, Florida. Charles was known for his athletic abilities, his dedication to his students, his industriousness, and his enjoyment and support of family and friends. Rest in peace Coach Kellogg.

No calling hours are planned. However, friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (11 Washington St., Attica, NY) on Saturday, January
6, 2024 at 11:00 am. Refreshments to follow the service.

Evan Charles Lamb, 96, of Batavia, NY, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the NYS Veterans’ Home in Batavia. Born on May 9, 1927 in Darien, NY, he was the son of the late Henry and Ida (Welker) Lamb. He is preceded in death by siblings, Elsie, Leslie, Kenneth, Roland and Gerald, and sisters-in-law, Margaret, Marian, Carolyn and Grace.

Evan spent his youth cultivating his academic, athletic, and musical talents while working on the family’s dairy farm. He started his academic career in a one room school house before moving onto the Corfu Central School system and graduating as the class valedictorian. He was often recognized for excellence in his agricultural studies and won the Empire Farmer Award in 1944. A natural born leader, Evan was President of his Senior Class of 1945, the local, Genesee County and NYS Chapters of Future Farmers of America and the Genesee County 4-H Club Council. He also excelled in a variety of sports, lettering in basketball, baseball and track as well as being the captain of the track team. 

Evan joined the US Army in 1945 as part of the last draft for WWII, serving in the Army marching band playing the tuba and in the Army dance band playing the bass viol. In 1946 on Armistice Day, he had the honor of playing in the Army band marching down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. While based in Fort Bliss, TX, he met the love of his life, Hazel Vonceil Self. They were married in Dallas, TX on August 27,1949, honeymooned in Niagara Falls, and made their way to Western NY where they settled and raised their family.

Evan received his Bachelor’s degree from Cornell’s Agriculture school in 1951. He was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and President of the Ho-Nun-Ee-Kah, the honorary society for men majoring in agriculture. He went on to receive a Master’s degree in History/Secondary Education from the University of Buffalo in 1962. 

He began his career as a dairy farmer in Darien, NY working in partnership with brother Gerald and was named Outstanding Young Farmer of Genesee County in 1959. Upon completing his Master’s degree, he moved his family to Attica, NY and taught American History at Attica High School for four years. In 1966, Evan made yet another significant career move and joined the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company where he served the next 40 years as a trusted financial advisor to hundreds of clients. He achieved many honors and recognition over the years while at Mass Mutual. 

Evan showcased his versatile musical talents throughout his life - playing the bass viol in various dance and jazz bands during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. A beloved member of his community, he was a faithful member of the Attica Trinity United Methodist Church for 55 years where he served in a variety of lay leadership roles, taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir as well as served as the choir director for several years. Evan was also an avid gardener, golfer and enjoyed traveling across the US, Europe and South America with Vonceil and close friends. When visiting France, he went to Normandy to see where brother Roland landed in the second wave on Omaha Beach. Two of Evan’s grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law have also proudly served their country as members of the Army, Navy and Marines. 

Evan is lovingly remembered for his innate leadership, outgoing personality, sense of humor, exemplary work ethic, strong Christian faith and devotion to family, church and community. He was known for his generosity and always looked for ways to help his family, friends and neighbors.

Evan is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Hazel Vonceil, and children, Natalie (David) Paradowski of Colden, NY; Merely (Michael) Krol of Churchville, NY; Timothy (Susan) Lamb of West Falls, NY; bonus daughter Anita (Jose Pedro) Deiderich of Trinidad, Bolivia, SA; five grandchildren, Marisa (Daniel) Esler, Ryan (Natalie) Lamb, Grayson (Rebekah) Krol, Ethan Paradowski and Robert Lamb; two great-grandchildren, Hudson Krol and Mira Esler; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. All are invited to attend Evan’s Celebration of Life Graveside Ceremony on Saturday, June 15 at 11:00 AM at the Darien Cemetery 1738 Broadway Rd. Darien, NY.

Kenneth L. Post, 96, of Elba, passed away on December 30, 2023 at home under the loving care of his family, along with his wonderful caregivers.

Ken was born January 22, 1927 in Batavia, the son of the late Leo and Alberta (Colson) Post.

Ken was a loving husband, father and grandfather all while being a life-long dairy farmer.  He farmed first with his grandfather and father and then with his sons, daughter and grandson.  He was the longest serving fireman and a member of the Elba Volunteer Fire Department and was also the longest member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba. He loved antique tractors, his John Deere toy collection and all things farming, and was still able to make his daily trip to the "shop" even in his 96th year.

Surviving are his children, John (Cheryl Totten) Post, Daniel (Kim) Post, Marcia (Todd) White, Janet (Judd) Ewell and Laurie (Pete) Torpey; grandchildren, Jason (Stacy) Post, Kailynn (Kyle) Stacy, Jeffrey (Janette) Post, Joy (Rich) Brewer, Holly (Shaun) Stoneham, Megan (Will) Hoffman, Brad (Nicole) White, Elizabeth (Fred) Turner, Derek (Deanna) Torpey, Chelsey (James) Vacanti and Cody (Michayla) Torpey; eighteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years, Louise Post and sister, Nancy Horton.

Marion F. Janicki, 91 of Corfu, passed away on Thursday (December 28, 2023) at United Memorial Medical Center.

He was born December 16, 1932 in Cheektowaga, NY, a son of the late Anthony and Mary Bogulski Janicki.

He served his country with the U.S. AirForce from 1952-1956. Marion was a former district manager for the Buffalo News prior to his retirement.

Survivors include his daughter Marie (Roger) Willgens. Son Brian Janicki. Grandchildren, Chris, Catherine, Ann and Robert Willgens. Great-grandchild, Avery Willgens and dear friend Judy Long and her family.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Buffalo, NY.

Bennington- Kenneth R Czworka, 63, of Bennington, left this world on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, to be with his parents. 

He was born in Batavia on May 5, 1960, a son of the late Walter and Lottie Czworka.

Ken started working for the Town of Bennington in 1977 and soon after married the love of his life, Sherry Weirs, on September 5, 1980. Together they raised two wonderful sons and enjoyed every moment with their grandchildren. Ken retired from the Town of Bennington as the Highway Superintendent in 2020 after 43 years of service.

Ken will be remembered by his wife, Sherry Czworka; sons, Jason (Victoria) Czworka of Bennington and Gregory Czworka (David Paye) of Holley; grandchildren, George and Elizabeth Czworka of Bennington; brothers, Joseph Czworka of Batavia, Walter (Cheryl) Czworka of Arkport; sisters, Rose (Ron) Kaczmarek of Dale and Judy (Kerry) Green of Batavia; many nieces, nephews , cousins, friends, and a special furry friend, Peaches.

In death Ken is reunited with his parents; brother, Frederick Czworka; parent in laws Lester and Nancy Weirs.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington, NY on Saturday, January 6, 2023, at 10:00am A private burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. There will be a celebration of life at the convenience of the family.

Pavilion - Deena M. Hargett, age 53 of Pavilion, NY passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family. 

She was born on July 4,1970 in San Diego, CA. a daughter to Woodrow A. and Judith C. (Brown) Shands of San Diego, CA.

Deena was a member of Calvary Chapel in Perry and a homemaker who enjoyed hiking, going on walks, camping and enjoyed raising her 13 children. 

Along with her parents she is survived by her husband James C. Hargett whom she married on September 7, 1991, 4 daughters: Laura (Nathan) Colopy of Perry, Meghan Hargett of San Diego, CA., Grace Hargett of Corfu, Verity Hargett of Pavilion, 9 sons: Andrew (Courtney) Wikel of Rockford, IL., Ryan (Tami) Hargett of Bemidji, MN., Jonah Hargett of Rochester, Joshua Hargett, Benjamin (Anna Doneburg) Hargett, Liam, Donovan, Brandon and Dylan Hargett all of Pavilion, 2 sisters: Michelle (Paul) Briggs of Citrus Heights, CA., Jennifer Cantellano of San Diego, CA., 4 grandchildren: Oliver, Archer, Mallory and Karolina Wikel,  along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

A Memorial service will be held at the Calvary Chapel S. Main St. in Perry, dates and times to be announced.

Kevin J. Bohn, age 77, of Perry, NY passed away on Saturday December 23, 2023 at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo. He was born on February 25, 1946 in Kenmore, New York a son to the late Elmo and Mary Ellen (Cogswell) Bohn.

Kevin was a 1963 graduate of Kenmore East High School and received his business degree from Genesee Community College. He served in the US Air Force from 1966-1970. He worked in the restaurant business for many years prior to buying the Lumberyard Restaurant in Perry in 1981. He and his wife Ann ran the well-known restaurant until they sold it in 2014. 

Kevin attended St. Joseph’s Church in Perry, a member of the Perry Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris award, Batavia Lions Club and the Batavia JC’s. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his home, spending time with his friends and family especially visits from his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife: Ann (Carter) Bohn whom he married on September 7, 1968, daughter: Daniell Bohn of Perry, son: Kevin (Merima Lelic) Bohn of Clarence Center, 2 sisters: Barbara Rogers of Clarence, Virginia Bohn of Stafford, 2 brothers: Roger (Sandra) Bohn of Batavia, John (Colleen) Bohn of Texas, sister-in-law: Beth Bohn of South Carolina, brother-in-law: Joe Gallo of Maryland, 3 grandchildren: Olivia, Carter and Isabel Bohn, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Along with his parents Kevin was preceded in death by a sister: Kathleen Gallo, 3 brothers: Ronald (Shirley) Bohn, Michael Bohn and James Bohn.

There will be a Celebration of Life gathering at a future date.

Kathleen M. Dylag, 75 of Cape Cod, Formerly of Akron, passed away into the loving arms of her Savior on Saturday, December 23, 2023.

She was born October 24, 1948 in the city of Buffalo, a daughter of the late Joseph P. Dylag and Elizabeth J. Dylag (Rzeznik) and was predeceased by her brother Joseph Jr.

Kathy was a longtime resident of Cape Cod and recently moved back to New York to be with her family. She was an advocate for the preservation of the Cape Cod National Sea Shores and an avid lover of cats and dogs, flowers and plants and the ocean. She loved spending time with her close friends and family.

Kathy is survived by her brother, James (Darlene) Dylag and her sister Judith (Harold) Schilling. Also survived by several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dolores L. (Poerschke) Brunea, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the age of 97, at Premier Genesee in Batavia.

Dolores was born on March 15, 1926, in North Tonawanda, NY, a daughter of the late Rudolph and Agnes (Wilke) Poerschke. Predeceased in death by her husband Henry Brunea whom she married on May 1, 1948, 3 brothers, Bernhardt, Paul and Edward; 4 sisters, Clara, Evelyn, Leona and Ida.

Dolores worked for Implement dealer in Akron, NY and at the Pembroke Thruway Service Station as a bookkeeper. She was a lifetime member of Indian Falls Global Methodist Church, Oakfield-Alabama American Legion Post 626 and was a former member of the Alabama Fire Department Auxiliary.

Dolores enjoyed gardening, needlework, crocheting, bingo, playing euchre and spending time with her grandchildren.

Dolores is survived by her children, Michael, Donald (Sharon), Laurie (Harold) and Scott; 5 granddaughters, Cassandra, Jennifer, Payadie, Erin and Ashley; 7 great grandchildren, Tyler, Andrea, Bianca, Alicia, Melissa, Keegan and Chase; 2 great great grandchildren, Dresden and Andrea, Jr.; brother-in-law, William (late Irene) Brunea and many nieces and nephews.

LeRoy ~ Joseph S. “Sam” Misiti, age 85, passed away Tuesday evening (Dec. 26, 2023) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

     He was born August 17, 1938 in LeRoy, a son of the late Joseph and Maria Rosa D’Agostino Misiti.   

Sam graduated from LeRoy High School and proudly served in the US Army.  He retired from the LeRoy Machine Shop and was a proud member of St. Joseph’s Church in LeRoy.

     His favorite pastime was going for coffee with the guys or stopping at his nieces for a good Italian bite.  He would share stories about the family, the army and growing up on Pleasant Street. He loved to box and was an avid fan. He loved all sports, especially watching all the kids play and coach.  He loved his garden.  His hot peppers and Basilico were his favorites.  Nothing he enjoyed more than hot roasted peppers and pasta sugo.  His Italian heritage, faith and family were the center of his life.  His legacy will be how he loved and was loved by so many.

     Sam was deeply devoted to his wife of 51 years, Maureen Kleps Misiti and is also survived by his sister-in-law, Angie Misiti; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces & nephews and great-great-nieces & nephews, who were like children to him and they idolized him; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, along with many longtime friends, who he considered family, relatives in Italy and his “Pleasant Street Family”. 

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters and brothers; Frances (Joseph) Rapone, Carmella (Robert) Humphrey, Vito (Louise) Misiti, Rose (Doug) Haskin and Vincent Misiti; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Betty Kleps, four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

     Family and friends are invited to attend Sam’s Rite of Christian Burial to be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church, 44 Lake Street, LeRoy.  Sam will be laid to rest in St. Francis Cemetery, LeRoy in the Spring of 2024.
