Vine Street Ice Rink, Batavia, circa the early 1950s

By Sam Campobello

Photo shows the ice skating rink on Vine Street before the current John Kennedy elementary school was built. The old stone building can be seen on the left side of the photo. If anyone else has any other photos of the ice rink, please post them. Also, please post any photos of the old Nu Lake swimming area on the corner of Wortendyke Road and South Main Street Road.

I remember skating there in the 1970s. JK was there, but there was a rink and we sat in that Old Stone building to warm up and change into our skates!

We used to go there in the summer and catch polywogs and frogs. Living on South Spruce Street we all went to East School(corner of East Main and North Spruce, where the Salvation Army building is now.) Our first year at the new John Kennedy School was like a different world. A few years later we moved to Oak Street. During the winter we would skate on Park Road along the Thruway. There was nothing there in the early 60's but open field.
I wish the kids today, would take the time, and have some "FUN".

I forgot....we used to ride our bikes out to Nu Lake. Many, many wonderful afternoons in the sun and water. Unfortunately, no pictures, sorry.

Thanks for your comments. Everyone seems to remember how fun both the ice rink and Nu Lake were, but unfortunately nobody seems to have any photos. I'm still hoping somebody who reads this contributes some old photos.
