ILGR's annual Taste of Independence fundraiser is Tuesday at Slomba Hall

Sixth Annual Taste of Independence food-sampling extravaganza is being held by Independent Living of the Genesee Region (ILGR) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Ascension Parish -- Slomba Hall, 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

Guests can try some signature dishes of the Genesee region’s finest restaurants, plus a Live Auction, a basket raffle and 50/50 split club.

Funds raised will be used to help people with disabilities living in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties who are in emergency situations with employment, or moving forward with life goals, when there are no other financial resources available. 

ILGR's services include independent living skills training, advocacy, peer counseling, diabetes self-management classes, a loan closet of medical equipment, housing and employment assistance, Social Security and Medicaid assistance information and referral, and many more.

There will be a Polka Mass and Dinner at Ascension Roman Catholic Parish, Batavia, on Saturday, Oct. 27. It is located at 19 Sumner St.

It is sponsored by Ascension Parish Altar and Rosary Society.

Polka Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. 

Golabki Dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m. until sold out in Slomba Hall. Take outs available.

Info meeting at Ascension Parish about October Holy Land pilgrimage is Sept. 25

Father David Glassmire, of Ascension Parish, Batavia, will host an informational evening about an upcoming pilgrimage to the Holy Land starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

It will feature Mediterranean food and drink and will take place in the Parish Learning Center at Slomba Hall (formerly Sacred Heart Hall), located at 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

The Holy Land pilgrimage is scheduled for Oct. 21-31, 2019 and is hosted by Fr. Glassmire and Infant of Prague's Fr. Corbin in Cheektowaga.

Attendees will view Rick Steve's Guide to the Holy Land and be able to ask questions about next month's trip.

Dinner Dance for ages 55 and up with tunes from the '40s to the '60s to be held May 31 at Ascension Parish

A dinner dance with music of the '40s, '50s, '60s, and a little bit of country, organized with Genesee County residents age 55 years and older in mind is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, May 31, at the Ascension Parish Center, 17 Sumner St., Batavia.

Presale tickets for the "Always on My Mind Dinner Dance" are $15 and available for purchase at the Senior Center, 2 Bank St., Batavia, through May 18 or until sold out. Tickets will not be available at the door.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; dinner service will begin at 5:30 p.m.; dancing and music start about 6:30.

The dinner menu is: black angus top round beef with mushroom sauce; roasted chicken breast with cornbread stuffing; rosemary roasted red potatoes, vegetable, green garden salad, fresh rolls and butter, beverages, crumb-topped (French) apple pie.

Ruth Spink, director at the Genesee County Office for the Aging, noted that, “As I was growing up, my folks would go out to dinner and dancing on a regular basis. Whether it was through church or my dad’s horse clubs, they’d be out on the dance floor every chance they got.

"When I was old enough and even beyond college, I’d join them. Restaurants all over the area had dance floors and bands playing. Sadly, those days are pretty well gone. Often, the only chance you get to have a meal and enjoy some good music and dancing is if you go to a wedding.

"We want to give people a chance to hear music of their era and feel those memories come rushing back.”

She also went on to say that, “This will be a fun evening whether you dance or not, have a date, come alone, or come with friends.”

Catering will be provided by Fred Hamilton; Chris Kalen will "spin the tunes"; and the Senior Center Quilters will be selling tickets for a chance to win a handmade patriotic quilt; and there will also be a basket raffle.

Everything is fine at Ascension Parish after report of basement flooding

Last night we reported a call for flooding in the basement accat Ascension Parish. This morning, received this update from the Parish office:

There was a small amount of water in the basement of the church due to a clogged storm drain on Swan Street.

No services were affected.

Weekend services will take place as scheduled:

  • Good Friday Passion of the Lord 2 p.m., March 30
  • Easter Vigil Mass at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 31
  • Easter Mass 9 a.m. and 11 a.m Sunday, April 1

St. Jerome Guild Fashion Show is noon April 15 at Ascension Parish

The St. Jerome Guild is sponsoring its annual fashion show is at noon on Sunday, April 15th, at Father Solumba Hall at Accension Parish, 15 Sumner St., Batavia.

Fashions presented by models of women, men, teen, children and toddler clothing.

Pre-sale tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 10 and under can be purchased at the St. Jerome Gift Shop at the Jerome Center 16 Bank St., Batavia, M-F 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Saturday from 9 - noon.

Included in the ticket is a catered lunch by the Dibble Center. Basket Raffles will be available.

History of the Guild:

The St. Jerome Guild Inc. has been serving the Batavia Community and hospital for more than 100 years. In 2017 it celebrated its 100th anniversary.

During that time the Guild has sponsored many fund raisers to support our local hospital. These include dinner dances, Mother’s Day dinners, flower sales, and lottery raffles.

In the past 100 years the Guild has donated hospital equipment, ambulances, equipped the coronary care unit at the former St. Jerome Hospital. In the past years the Guild has annually donated $10,000 to the United Memorial Medical Center Foundation in a directorship program.

Each vendor will have a door prize to give away to a lucky winner.

Jackson principal thanks Ascension Parish for support during fire

On behalf of the Jackson Primary School staff and students,  we would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Father David Glassmire and Ascension Parish.

On Wednesday, March 8th, the school needed to evacuate all students quickly due to a serious house fire, across the street from the school. It was a very cold and windy morning as 350 primary students walked to the Ascension Parish parking lot in evacuation protocol.

Within minutes, students were able to enter the Sacred Heart reception hall and knew they were safe and warm. Father David welcomed us immediately and quickly supported our needs in order for the school to operate an efficient evacuation dismissal plan.   

Additionally, we would like to thank Sherry Otto who saw us coming and quickly communicated this to Father Glassmire, Dave Fasano, and the City Police Department for assisting us that morning.

The overall support from Ascension Parish is a true reflection of the wonderful and compassionate people that make up  Batavia’s community.

St. Joseph Day Table to be held March 19 at Ascension Parish in Batavia

Ascension Parish in Batavia will host its annual Saint Joseph Day Table beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 19.

This year the event is open to the general public and the funds raised will be used for the ministry and outreach done by Ascension Parish on behalf of the community. According to its pastor, Fr. David R. Glassmire, the parish seeks to "give back to the community for the goodness the Lord has shown to us by caring for the poor in our midst."

The traditional Italian feast will be held in the parish's Slomba Hall, 15 Sumner St. Bing’s Catering of Amherst is in charge of the food. A seven-course meal will be served family style to include: antipasti, bread, fish, greens and beans, smelt, pasta con sarde, along with a cash bar and wine available for your table. A children's menu will include mac and cheese, pizza and finger foods.

Music and Entertainment by Steve Balestreri. 

COST: $25 per adult, $12.50 per child.

Catered Italian St. Joseph Table Feast set for March 13 at Ascension Parish, Batavia

A traditional Italian feast catered by Bing's Restaurant, of Amherst, will be available for a St. Joseph Table event at Ascension Parish beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13.

Proceeds will aid ministry and outreach to area veterans, elderly and youth in the City of Batavia.

Space is limited to 250!

Cost is $25 per person if you buy tickets in advance at the Parish Office. Cash or check only. Make checks payable to Ascension Parish. If you pre-pay and buy online, there is a $1.75 service fee added to the price, so those tickets are $26.75 apiece. Ascension Parish in Batavia to host traditional festive Polish Wigilia Dinner on Dec. 6

Ascension Parish will hold a festive traditional Polish Wigilia Dinner at Ascension Parish, Slomba Hall, 17 Sumner St., Batavia, on Sunday, Dec. 6th, 2015 at 5 p.m. with doors opening at 3:45 p.m. The general public is invited to celebrate the Christmas season in faith, hope and love.

The Wigilia is a seven-course meatless Christmas meal replete with the sharing of the Opłatek (Christmas Wafer). Kolendy (Christmas Carols) will be sung. There will be a visit from St. Nicholas for the children. Entertainment is being provided by the Ole Hippies.

There will be cocktails, theme baskets, 50/50 split club, quilt and specialty raffles.

Donations are $25 per person (adult) and $12 per person (child). Tickets may be purchased online at ascensionrcc@weshareonline.org. for a cost of $26.75 per person (adult) and $13.75 per person (child).

Ascension Parish Fruit of the Vine Wine Tasting 'Fun Raiser'

Ascension Parish will host the Fruit of the Vine Wine Tasting Fun Raiser ™ on Sunday, April 25th from 5-8 p.m.

This year the event is open to the general public and for adults 21 years of age and older (proper identification is required). This event will feature premium Finger Lakes wines handcrafted by Eagle Crest and O-Neh-Da Vineyards of Hemlock Lake.

This year the event is open to the general public and the funds raised will be used to feed and care for the poor residing within the City of Batavia. During these difficult winter months this need is visible on our streets and in our warming shelters. As a parish we seek to give back to the community for the goodness the Lord has shown to us by caring for the poor in our midst.

Spaghetti dinner and raffle set to help Batavia man, father of four

Adam Figlow is a single father of four and a maintenance man at Ascension Parish in Batavia. Fellow parishioner and parish volunteer Sue Hartrick describes him as very humble, quiet, and "an extremely hard worker."

"You can ask him to do anything and say it doesn't have to be done right away," Hartrick said, "and then you turn around and it's done in a half hour."

But he has fallen on hard luck. In December, Figlow was diagnosed with a rare form of soft tissue cancer called spindle cell sarcoma.

Figlow said he first knew something was wrong one day in late summer, when he noticed a strange growth on his left arm.

"It never hurt or anything," he said. "It was just cosmetically annoying."

Since being diagnosed, he has undergone two surgeries and radiation therapy. His aunt and uncle, Kathy and Nick La Farnara, drove him to all of his appointments and stood by him through the surgeries, for which he expressed deep gratitude.

Figlow is set to return to work next month, but will have been out on disability for six months at that point. New York State disability payments have not been enough to keep up with Figlow's hospital bills and everyday living expenses.

That is why Ascension Parish will be hosting a spaghetti dinner, theme basket and 50/50 raffle on Saturday, May 31 from 5 until 7 p.m., with theme basket and raffle drawings starting at 7 p.m. The event will be at the parish's Slomba Hall, at 17 Sumner St. in Batavia.

Each meal will include spaghetti, meatball/sausage, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage.

Presale dinner tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children, or $8 at the door. Takeout will be available.

Hartrick, who has spearheaded the event from day one, has been overwhelmed by the generous response.

"I thought it would be fabulous if we could get 30 baskets (for the basket raffle)," Hartrick said. "As of now, we have 79 baskets and 33 gift cards."

A variety of theme baskets -- including dog and cat, camping, gardening, children's toy and lottery baskets -- have been donated by individuals and businesses in and around the Batavia area.

"We've gotten more generosity than I could ever imagine," Hartrick said. "I was hoping the parish would rally around Adam in his time of need. They have not rallied...they have soared."

"The heart of Batavia and the parish community is unbelievable," Figlow said. "I can't thank them enough...I'm just so appreciative of everybody."

Basket ticket costs are as follows:

  • 25 tickets for $5 for the less expensive baskets
  • 25 tickets for $10 for the more expensive ($25 or more in value)

Additionally, someone donated a handmade quilt depicting an outdoor scene. It has a value of about $200, and will be the object of a 50/50 raffle. People can buy tickets $2 apiece or three tickets for $5.

Spaghetti dinner & raffle at Ascension Parish to benefit cancer-stricken single father of four

A benefit dinner for Adam Figlow will be held on May 31 at Ascension Roman Catholic Parish, located at 15 Sumner St. in the City of Batavia.

Adam is a 35-year-old single father of four who is the custodian at the parish. He was diagnosed in December with spindle cell sarcoma of his left arm. He has since undergone two surgeries and a course of radiation therapy.

Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and the proceeds will help him with his medical expenses. There will be spaghetti, a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.
