Press Release:

The Batavia Police Department would like to thank the Batavia Lions Club for its generous donation and work during the Day of Caring.  Batavia PD donated several slightly used bicycles to the Lions Club.

During the Genesee County Day of Caring, the Lions Club partnered with Adam Miller Toy and Bicycle to service/fix up these bikes.  Once the tuneups were completed, the Lions Club donated eight bicycles back to Batavia PD to be distributed to local children in need.

The Batavia PD School Resource Officers teamed up with guidance counselors from Batavia City Schools to select these children.  Batavia PD and the Lions Club have agreed to continue this partnership in the years to come to ensure we can help the community in which we serve.

Batavia PD would like to thank the Lions Club, Adam Millers, and the Batavia City Schools for their assistance in this newly founded program.

Lions Club prepares for Day of Caring bike restoration project https://www.thebatavian.com/press-release/lions-club-prepares-for-day-of-caring-bike-restoration-project/630137
img_0567.jpg

Press release:

As the Batavia Lions Club continues to move past the pandemic, we are reconnecting with our partners from past projects.

For many years the Club had been working with the Batavia Police Department and Adam Millers to refurbish bikes that have been recovered by the BPD and get them into the hands of children and adults who can use them. To that end, Detectives James Defreze and Matthew Wojtaszczyk (pictured above with Lions President Diane Hawn) visited the Club to review how bikes might be recovered and be eligible for donation to the Lions Club.

Many bikes are recovered each year that are damaged beyond repair. Those bikes are disposed of. If owners can be found for the usable bikes, they will be returned. If there is no way to determine ownership, they can be donated to an organization like the Lions. In past years those bikes have been refurbished and distributed to organizations such as The Salvation Army and ARC.

The detectives do encourage people to register their bikes with the BPD so if they are recovered, the bikes can be returned to the owner.

A relaxed discussion followed on several issues that the BPD faces every day and the complexity of modern law enforcement. Detectives Defreze and Wojtaszczyk were relaxed and informative in the give-and-take with the Lions Club. The Club looks forward to re-establishing the bike program and working with BPD to serve the community.

Registration open for United Way Day of Caring https://www.thebatavian.com/press-release/registration-open-for-united-way-day-of-caring/595464 Press release:

Volunteer registration is now open for United Way’s annual Day of Caring, happening on Thursday, May 19. For the first time in its 36-year history, Day of Caring will take place across Monroe, Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming, Wayne, and Ontario County on the same day.

Day of Caring is the community’s single largest volunteer effort, helping local not-for-profit organizations with projects, or ‘needs’, that they may not otherwise have resources for. Day of Caring needs includes painting, raking, cleaning up parks, planting community gardens, etc.

This year, more than 100 agency volunteer needs have already been registered. To browse through a list of needs, and to sign up to volunteer, visit unitedwayrocflx.org/volunteer. Volunteers can sign up as individuals or as a team. Volunteer registration closes Thursday, May 12. Agencies have until Saturday, April 30 to register a need.

Photos by Jim Burns and press release:

The United Way of Genesee County and the Day of Caring Committee would like to thank all volunteers who participated in completing 26 projects throughout Genesee County on May 19th for the Annual Day of Caring.

Projects included planting a vegetable garden at Community Action, staining the decks at the Arc residential homes, repairing bicycles for those in need with the Lions Club, and grooming the sensory trails at Purple Pony Therapeutic Equestrian Center; plus, many outdoor spring cleanup projects.

The Muckdogs have annually offered Dwyer Stadium as the host site for the energizing Day of Caring kick-off. Due to coronavirus restrictions this year, the kick-off could not happen. Therefore, the Day of Caring Committee created their own volunteer team and gave back to the Muckdogs by spending the entire day cleaning the stadium.

The Day of Caring this year was a huge success, because of the commitment of volunteers who register through their company, service group, agency or individually to participate in making an impact to the agencies, schools and churches in our community.

An enormous thank you to the following volunteer teams:

  • Team O-AT-KA Milk Products
  • Team Leadership Genesee
  • Team Northgate Church
  • Team Freed Maxick
  • Team GCASA
  • Team Cornell Cooperative Extension
  • Team Tompkins Bank of Castile and Insurance Agencies
  • Team Howard Hannah
  • Team Student Transportation
  • Team Remedy Staffing
  • Team PathStone
  • Team Lions Club
  • Team Batavia Rotary
  • Team Liberty Pumps
  • Team YWCA
  • Team UMMC Staff
  • Team UMMC Residents
  • Team Town of Batavia
  • Team US Gypsum Corp
  • Team Day of Caring Committee

An additional thank you to Arctic Refrigeration for supplying water and ice to all of our volunteers. And, to the agency project sites for feeding lunch to almost 175 hard-working participants.

The Day of Caring would not exist without all of these amazing folks.

For questions about the United Way of Genesee County, or how to make a donation, please contact Tammy Hathaway at (585) 343-8141.
