22nd Annual Halloween Parade in the city

The 22nd Annual Halloween Parade will take place this Sunday, Oct. 26. Line will form starting at 12:45 p.m. on the west side of Genesee Country Mall/City Centre near Dan's Tires.

Small children MUST be accompanied by an adult. Wagons or sleds strongly recommended.

Parade begins at 1 o'clock. There is no rain date. Listen to WBTA for cancellations by 11:30 a.m.

The first 100 children 10 and under in costume only will receive a special free gift compliments of Oliver's Candies.

Alabama Fire Dept. hosts Fire Prevention Fun Night/Open House tonight

The Town of Alabama Volunteer Fire Department will host to the public a Fire Prevention Fun Night and Open House this evening, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8. It will be held at the Recreation Hall at 2230 Judge Road/Route 63, Alabama.

Free food and drinks, door prizes, obstacle course, Mercy Flight Helicopter will land. Wear a costume for a chance to win Smoke Alarms.

The College Village Student Residential community at Genesee Community College invites the community to an Open House at its two newest buildings on Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 4-6 p.m. The Village staff will show off Hemlock and Lilac halls, recently completed and now housing GCC students.

WYN Tech Academy hosts Fall Informational Session at Batavia Middle School

The staff of the WNY Tech Academy, the new six-year regional high school will be hosting three informational sessions during the first week of November.

Genesee Symphony Orchestra's season debut is this afternoon at St. James church

The Genesee Symphony Orchestra opens its 2014 season at 4 p.m. today at St. James Episcopal Church, Batavia.

Raffaele Ponti will conduct the orchestra for a program titled "Reformation Symphony." The guest artist is organist Ann Emmans. Pieces include Felix Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 5, and Camille Saint-Saens, Symphony No. 3.

Tickets are $15 each and available at the door.

18th annual 'Batavia Reads John Gardner' at the Pok-A-Dot

For the 18th year in a row, Batavians (and others) will gather to read from the works of author John Gardner on an October evening. This year's edition of "Batavia Reads John Gardner" will be held Saturday, Oct. 25th, at 8 p.m. at the Pok-A-Dot.

'Fall for Le Roy' debuts on Main Street in the Village - Food, shopping, live music, and more

The premiere Fall for Le Roy will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, on Main Street in Downtown Le Roy.

Special edition of Reel Discussion at Richmond library: 'Hocus Pocus'

A special edition of Reel Discussion is planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Richmond Memorial Library.

Everyone is invited to watch the movie and join in a group discussion about it afterward.

"Hocus Pocus" is the film: "You're in for a devil of a time when three outlandishly wild witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) return to 17th Century Salem, Ma., after they're accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters.

Tonawanda Valley Collectors Club meeting topic: 'Antiques Roadshow' in NYC

The Tonawanda Valley Collectors Club Meeting will be held beginning at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27. The topic for this month’s meeting will be Antiques Roadshow from NYC.

Club member Frances McNulty and her friend Linda Shepard went to NYC in August and they took some items to be appraised. They will tell us what it is like to be part of this great and interesting event.

Candlelight guided ghost walk at Batavia Cemetery

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18th, the Batavia Cemetery Association will host a candlelight guided ghost walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue in Batavia. The tours will feature the famous and infamous movers and shakers who shaped and influenced the City of Batavia.

The guided tour will bring guests to meet men and women of Batavia who, for various reasons, held great power and exerted great influence in their day, were victims of tragic events, or both.

Candlelight guided ghost walk at Batavia Cemetery is Oct. 18

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18th, the Batavia Cemetery Association will host a candlelight guided ghost walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue in Batavia. The tours will feature the famous and infamous movers and shakers who shaped and influenced the City of Batavia.

The guided tour will bring guests to meet men and women of Batavia who, for various reasons, held great power and exerted great influence in their day, were victims of tragic events, or both.

Some of the ghosts who will tell their stories on the tour are: Philemon Tracy, one of the few Confederate officers buried in the North; Ruth, the unknown victim of a horrendous murder; Joseph Ellicott, a man of great power and great flaws; and William Morgan, the man who disappeared and was allegedly murdered before he could reveal the secrets of the Masons.

Tours begin at 7 p.m. and run every 15 minutes until 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes refreshments. Tickets are available at the gate the day of the event at Historic Batavia Cemetery, Harvester Avenue, Batavia. Reservations are suggested. All-you-can-eat supper of soups and breads for five bucks at Batavia First United Methodist Church

Graham Corp. and Batavia Cemetery Association present 'Run For Your Life' 5K and Kids' Fun Run at historic cemetery

On Saturday, Oct. 25th, Graham Corporation will present and the Batavia Cemetery Association will host the "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!" 5K RACE and KIDS FUN RUN. Runners will start on their 5K course inside the candlelit historic cemetery at dusk.

After exiting the Historic Batavia Cemetery onto Harvester Avenue, participants will follow the course signs through the city and back into the main gate where they will finish on the candlelit path.

SADD sponsors dance for middle schoolers at GCC Forum

SADD will host a dance for middle schoolers (grades 6 thru 9) inside the Genesee Community College Forum from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.

Cost is $3 for those who wear red, in celebration of Red Ribbon Week, and $5 for those not wearing red. Drinks and popcorn will be available at a low cost.

All proceeds will go to Genesee Countywide SADD.

Landmark Society hosts talk on 100-year history of Rowell Mansion

The Landmark Society of Genesee County will present a lecture entitled "Batavia Mansion Centennial: Restoring Rowell" by Diane Kastenbaum at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Reading Room at Richmond Memorial Library.

The public is encouraged to attend.

Kastenbaum will share her experiences living in and restoring one of Batavia's grandest residences, known as the Rowell Mansion.

Businessman E.N. Rowell built the unique Beaux Arts residence at 71 Ellicott Ave. in 1914. The current owner will inform listeners about its 100-year history.

Annual Barn Dance to benefit Elba Historical Society

The annual Barn Dance to raise funds for the Elba Historical Society will be held starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. It's at Torrey's barn on Route 98, two miles south of Elba. Look for a white barn, red roof and a windmill.

The Front Porch Pickers will kick things off at 4. Then at 6:30 Kelly's Oldtimers will perform and everyone can round and square dance until they are good and tired!

Good food will be available. Coffee, tea and cocoa are free.

Hay bales will be there to sit on, but you are welcome to bring your own chairs.

'Old Bottles' presentation by Elba Historical Society at Elba Firemen's Hall

The Elba Historical Society will host a program on "Old Bottles" presented by Gary Harkness. It will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Elba Firemen's Hall at the Four Corners.

Harkness will show bottles from Batavia, Oakfield, one-of-a-kind from Byron, and a new acquisition and also one-of-a-kind from a Dr. C.L. Curtis, who practiced in Elba from 1851 to 1871.

The regular meeting will follow and there will be discussion about the upcoming Roast Beef Dinner & Basket Raffle to be held Oct. 2 as well as the Barn Dance on Oct. 11.
