Car on fire at Main and Fargo roads in Stafford

A totally "fully involved" car fire is reported at Main and Fargo roads in Stafford. Stafford Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 2:10 p.m.: The fire is out. No one was hurt. Stafford is back in service.

Meter box on fire at home on North Lake Road, Bergen

A meter box on the house at 6566 N. Lake Road, Bergen, is reportedly on fire.

There is smoke inside the residence.

Bergen Fire Department along with mutual aid from Churchville dispatched. Mercy EMS also dispatched.

Chief on scene reports fire coming from the meter box on the outside.

UPDATE 3:40 a.m.: Churchville requested to respond through the village. The crew will need to lay a line on the south side of the structure.

UPDATE 3:46 a.m.: Le Roy requested to Bergen's hall to fill in. Fire at the meter is out. Crews checking for extension. Ventilation in progress.

Homeless man charged with arson in small fire on State Street

A homeless man who was given permission to sleep on the back porch of a residence on State Street has been arrested and charged with arson in the fourth degree after a fire he started caused some damage to the house.

The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday and quickly extinguished by city firefighters, causing minimal damage to the porch and siding of the house at 107 State St., Batavia.

Reginald J. Hawker, 57, of no permanent address, was arrested Friday afternoon following an investigation by Det. Patrick Corona.

He was jailed without bail.

Hawker is accused of intentionally setting the fire. Corona said it's believed that Hawker started the fire on the porch in an attempt to cook and to have heat and light.

Report of smoke in the basement of residence on State Street

City Fire Department is dispatched to 107 State St. for report of smoke in the basement.

Engine 12 and Ladder 15 on scene, "nothing showing."

UPDATE 8:39 p.m.: "Smoke in the house. Investigating."

UPDATE 8:43 p.m.: Police requested to the scene for a possible investigation of arson. Firefighters apparently found something at the back of the house prompting them to request police to the scene.

Dryer fire reported at GCC

A dryer fire has been reported at Genesee Community College on the main campus.

An evacuation is in progress.

Town of Batavia Fire Department is dispatched to the main circle entrance.

UPDATE 9:21 a.m.: Genesee County Emergency Services on scene. Building evacuated. Fire units told to use service entrance. The dryer is near the loading dock.

UPDATE 9:26 a.m.: Fire is out.

Grease fire on Highland Park in the city

A grease fire which began on an electric stove in the kitchen is reported at 17 1/2 Highland Park in the City of Batavia. City firefighters are on scene and everyone has been evacuated from the building.

An interior firefighter says he's in the attic and it doesn't look like there's any extension of the fire. When asked if he can check for two cats, he says "they were on their way down as I was coming up."

UPDATE 6:21 p.m.: The fire is out and firefighters are checking for extensions and doing overhaul of the scene. The location is between is between Jackson Street and Pringle Avenue.

UPDATE 9:37 p.m.: The City of Batavia Fire Department released the following information about the fire. The fire caused an estimated $13,000 damage to the building and contents. The building is owned by Philip Pastore. The tenant is Kristin Brockway. The fire was contained to the kitchen. (Fire Chief Jim Maxwell said earlier tonight that firefighters did a good job of containing the fire to the kitchen). Crews were on scene for one hour.

Darien property owner is finishing yesterday's controlled burn

A controlled burn in Darien that took place yesterday was thought to be rekindled after fire and smoke were reported there a few moments ago.

The property owner at 9668 9688 Allegany Road told authorities he is aware of the situation and is burning off the residual debris from Sunday.

Darien and Alabama fire departments were called but the response was cancelled.

Car engine fire reported on Harloff Road, Batavia

A car engine is reportedly fully engulfed in flames on Harloff Road near Area 51 in Batavia.

East Pembroke Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 9:03 a.m.: Car is fully involved. Town of Batavia Fire Department requested for mutual aid.

UPDATE 9:04 a.m.: Town of Batavia can stand down.

Car fire on westbound Thruway

A car fire is reported on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 385.3. Town of Batavia Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 10:33 p.m.: Chief on scene, "nothing showing." Assignment held to Engine 24.

UPDATE 10:37 p.m.: A chief reports, "We have a car full of people. The car is not drivable. We'll need a trooper and a tow."

Elba firefighters assisting Barre to battle barn blaze

Elba firefighters are at the scene of a barn fire in Barre, providing mutual aid to extinguish the blaze. The location is off of White City Road Extension, at 15146 Jakaub Road.

UPDATE 10:25 p.m.: Elba is back in service.

Brush fire reported off Junction Road, Pavilion

A brush fire has been reported in the area of 7116 Junction Road, Pavilion.

Pavilion Fire Department is dispatched along with mutual aid from Le Roy and York.

The fire is "in some cattails and leaves back in the woods," a first responder says. 

The fire will need to be fought by hand, the responder reports.

UPDATE 3:18 p.m.: Stafford's brush truck requested to the scene.

UPDATE 3:19 p.m.: Deputy requested to the scene to talk with the homeowner about burn laws.

UPDATE 3:22 p.m.: York can stand down.

UPDATE 3:26 p.m.: Stafford can go back in service.

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: Fire mostly out, but quite a few hot spots left.

Grass fire off Batavia-Stafford TL Road

A grass fire is reported at 8215 Batavia-Stafford Town Line Road. Stafford Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 5:29 p.m.: They are still trying to find the fire. Dispatch got two calls on this, one from a driver on the Thruway, and another from someone at GCC, who said the fire was across from College Village in a field.

UPDATE 5:46 p.m.: All Stafford units are back in service. No fire was located despite scouring several roads in the area.

Brush fire in the woods off Reuben Road, Alabama

A brush fire is reported in the woods behind a house at 7405 Reuben Road. Town of Alabama Fire Department is called to the scene. Oakfield Fire Department is called to standby in its quarters.

UPDATE 3:18 p.m.: Indian Falls and Pembroke are called in to provide mutual aid.

UPDATE 3:36 p.m.: Corfu requested mutual aid. Corfu's engine with its "deluge gun" requested to the scene. Firefighters are having a hard time reaching the fire through the woods.  A chief says, "the only way we're going to get back there is with a deluge gun."

UPDATE 3:42 p.m.: Fire is out. Chief says, "we're just wetting things down."

UPDATE 3:58 p.m.: All units back in service.

Brush fire off Wilkinson Road

A brush fire is reported at 9103 Wilkinson Road in East Pembroke. The East Pembroke Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 2:54 p.m.: A brush truck from the Town of Batavia is requested for mutual aid but a firefighter familiar with the terrain says the blaze is in a swampy area and the truck won't be able to get through. They are working to find a solution. "You gotta lot of smoke showin'" ..."I don't know how we're going to get to it. It's going toward a house."

UPDATE 2:57 p.m.: They've "got to upgrade" to an engine from the Town of Batavia.

UPDATE 2:59 p.m.: Some responders have to wait for a train to pass before they can tackle the fire.

UPDATE 3:01 p.m.: A Sheriff's deputy is requested to the scene. The fire is believed to have started when someone lit some brush too close to a hedgerow and "it took off." This is "an illegal burn."

UPDATE 3:08 p.m.: Fire police from Corfu are called to shut down the roadway.

Brush fire is headed toward the woods off North Bergen Road

A brush fire behind a house in Bergen is burning a path to the woods. A large column of black smoke can reportedly be seen from the location, which is 7338 North Bergen Road. Bergen Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 2:14 p.m.: The fire is far from the roadway and will not be easy to reach. Brush trucks from Byron and Brockport are called to the scene.

UPDATE 2:17 p.m.: The homeowner says he is burning six to eight rows of hay. He says the location is remote. The mutual aid trucks from Byron and Brockport are cancelled. The fire chief is talking with the homeowner and the fire does not appear to be moving toward the woods.

UPDATE 2:28 p.m.: Firefighters are at the scene working to extinguish what remains of the controlled burn.

UPDATE 2:41 p.m.: The responders are back in service.

Grass fire on Bloomingdale Road

A grass fire is reported at 510 Bloomingdale Road in Alabama. Alabama Fire Department is called to the scene.

UPDATE 11:12 a.m.: "We've got it knocked down pretty good. We're all set." The assignment is being held to Engine One.

UPDATE 11:48 p.m.: The fire is out. Alabama fire is back in service.

Smoke reported on first floor of Leisure Timers Apartments, Basom

There's a report of smoke on the first floor of Leisure Timers Apartments, 364 Bloomingdale Road, Basom.

Alabama Fire Department along with mutual aid from Indian Falls and Akron, is responding.

The residence has not yet been evacuated.

UPDATE 2:18 p.m.: Akron and Indian Falls put back in service. Alabama units still in route can respond non-emergency. Residence is evacuated.

Barn fire on Dorman Road, Town of Batavia

A barn fire is reported at 9262 Dorman Road in the Town of Batavia. It was possibly ignited when a motorhome caught fire. Town of Batavia Fire Department is responding along with a tanker from Alexander.

UPDATE 2:32 p.m.: The chief reports the fire is under control.

UPDATE 3:21 p.m.: All units back in service.
