Glow Corporate Cup Race

By James Burns

The glow Corporate Cup Race set off exactly on time in Centennial Park tonight in Batavia. The annual event is not just a race, it is a team building exercise for the area's business as well as a pretty nice festival for a Wednesday evening.

The race benefits the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming YMCA. Whether they ran, jogged or walked, all of the participants seemed to have a good time.

This years winner was Colin Mulcahy (16:23) pictured on the right, with Bill Buckenmeyer (16:55) coming in second. This duo came in first and second last year also.

With out a doubt, most appeared to enjoy the "After GLOW" party better than the race itself. While the race had sizable number of entrants, an equal number of their supporters were at the park with tents getting the food, water and beer ready for their return from the 5K.

Each business had their own tent but there was a lot of networking and social visits going on before and after the event.

As part of the GLOW Corporate Challenge last month, organizers put together a T-shirt design contest and this year, based on volunteer votes, Freed Maxick came up with the winning design. The prize was a $500 donation to the charity of their choice, and staff chose the UMMC Foundation and the Justice for Children Foundation.

Photo: Sam Schafer, Carmela Piazza, Liz Renz, Lori Aratari, Steve Tufts, Jason Armbrewster, Kim Mills (who also had the fastest women's time), Olivia Engel and Tim Moag. Aratari is with UMMC, Ambrewster with Justice for Children, Tufts and Piazza are with Merrill Lynch representing GLOW Cup, and the others are with Freed Maxick. Each charity received $250 and the balance of the proceeds from the event benefit the YMCA.

Register today for our 4th annual Glow Corporate Cup!

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, Merrill Lynch in Batavia will sponsor the fourth annual GLOW Corporate Cup. Each year local businesses form teams to compete in a 5K race wherein the company with the lowest combined time takes home the GLOW cup.

Following the race is the region’s largest office party. Businesses are encouraged to set up tents in Centennial Park, bring refreshments and prepare to have a great time as they mingle with other local companies. Live music is provided as runners and supporters enjoy the post-race “AfterGLOW.”

Last year, the race included 700 runners and more than 1,000 people participated in the post-race celebration. In the first two years more than $30,000 was raised for the GLOW YMCA and this year event is expected to exceed last year's total in participants and funds raised.

“Our purpose is to bring the businesses of the GLOW region together for a common cause,” said Joshua Dent, one of the race organizers. “The after-party was intended to celebrate the outstanding companies we have in the region that are giving back to their community.”

The GLOW YMCA serves the communities of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties.

“This year we would like to see even more participants from beyond Genesee County,” Dent said.

Registration is $25 per person and individuals must be 18 or older to participate. The route has been certified as a USA Track and Field Course.

All funds raised go toward programs for the GLOW YMCA. Register today! Click here for more information. Questions concerning the event may be sent to: info@glowcorporatecup.org

Batavia resident and state gold medalist makes national leaderboard, looks ahead to more of same

By Zachary Lee

Local runner and Empire State Games Gold Medal winner Frank Gioia (1983, 1984; plus a Bronze medal in '82) is proof that age is just a number.

After an injury-induced hiatus of more than a decade, the 63-year-old Batavia resident renewed his enthusiam for racing after retiring 2013.

He raced in the third annual GLOW Corporate Cup 5K last August, placing 10th out of 744 participants with a time of 19:46.

Earlier this year, on April 24 in Dedham, Mass., he placed eighth in the United States Track & Field Masters 10K Championship for his age group (ages 61-64) with a time of 41:58.

Being in the top 10 in the nation for his age group is quite an accomplishment, especially after suffering a severe injury to his Achilles tendon while running Rochester's Cobbs Hill 17 years ago.

"I was reaching the mile mark and I felt it; it caused me to jump in the air in pain and I knew I was done," Gioia said.

That, coupled with work and family and the everyday demands of life, steered him clear of running for 14 years. But that's mostly in his rearview mirror now. These days, this Dad is focused forward.

His next race will be Oct. 2 at Syracuse's Festival of Races National 5K starting in the morning at 8:50.

Record setting day for GLOW Corporate Cup

By Howard B. Owens

With 840 runners and walkers, 51 company teams and 42 corporate tents set up in Batavia's Centennial Park, the third year of the GLOW Corporate Cup proved to be the biggest yet.

The event, organized primarily by executives with the Merrill Lynch office in Batavia, will have raised more than $20,000 for the GLOW YMCA once receipts are tallied.

Batavia City Schools fielded the winning team and Corey Brown of Crickler Vending posted the race's fastest time at 17:42.

The organizers got a lot of positive feedback, said Joshua Dent, a VP with Merrill Lynch.

"If they're serious runners, the racers are very happy with the course Steve Tufts set up," Dent said. "It runs like a professional race. Then, unlike most races, there is this incredible after-party that makes it unique and different. The environment is fun. So we get the serious runners who are happy with the event, and then the businesses who participate and send walkers and then get to hang out after and listen to a band and they're satisfied as well. Those two aspect help make it a successful and unique event."

Dent looks forward to seeing the event grow, especially as the promoters work to attract more corporate teams from Orleans, Livingston and Wyoming counties.

It's gratifying to see the hard work of Tufts and John Ritter pay off in a big way for the GLOW YMCA, Dent said.

"It obviously means a lot to be able to give that much back to the community," Dent said. "The support of all the volunteers means so much. There's just an incredible amount of work that goes into putting this together. John Riter and Steve Tufts worked tirelessly to pull this off.

"It's not a one-day process. It's days and days and days. So to see the culmination, to see all the businesses that participate and do something that is fun and good for you and get the chance to hang out on a beautiful day and network, it clicked on all points."

Merrill Lynch hosts third annual GLOW Corporate Cup

By Traci Turner

joshglowcup2015.jpg

More than 40 local businesses and 670 runners and walkers are already registered for the GLOW Corporate Cup on Aug. 6.

This year the Merrill Lynch team in Batavia, the premiere sponsor of the event, has been working hard to increase sponsorship and the number of runners. Joshua Dent, vice president and planning committee member, expects at least 100 more runners will sign up before the race. Businesses can form teams and register online for the race until the day of the Corporate Cup.

Runners will take their mark at 6 p.m. at Centennial Park to compete in the 5K race. The team with the lowest combined time will be awarded the GLOW Corporate Cup. First Niagara Bank's team won last year.

All the proceeds from the race go directly to GLOW YMCA, which serves the communities of Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Last year, the Glow Corporate Cup raised $18,000 for the GLOW YMCA. The Merrill Lynch team hopes to exceed that amount this year.

"The GLOW YMCA was a natural fit to give back to because they provide fitness and health programs to the communities that we work and live in," Dent said.

The AfterGLOW, the county's largest office party, will immediately follow the race. To support runners, local businesses are invited to set up tents in the park and bring food to celebrate. The after-party is a social event where employees can mingle with other companies and enjoy music from a local band.

John Riter, senior financial advisor, first came up with the idea of hosting a Corporate Cup after attending the Corporate Challenge in Buffalo. Riter said he thought it would be a great way to build the community and introduced his vision to the team. The team has been working to plan and host the event ever since.

In the future, the team would like to encourage more local businesses from surrounding counties to participate in the Glow Corporate Cup.

"The primary geographic location of the businesses participating right now is Genesee County," Dent said. "We really want to make it a regional event and we are working hard to promote it to surrounding counties."

Some 500 people participated in the first ever GLOW Corporate Cup 5K race, which started and ended in Centennial Park this evening.

Brandon Reaert, of Oakfield, won the race with a time of 17:43.

Runners signed up in teams from companies throughout the GLOW region.

Once the race was over, participates hung out in Centennial Park for After GLOW, the "largest office party" ever, at least locally. Companies were encouraged to set up their own tents and tables and enjoy live music.

Inaugural GLOW Corporate Cup 5K race sponsored by Merrill Lynch is Aug. 1

By Bonnie Marrocco

The YMCA has a new best friend -- the Batavia Office of Merrill Lynch. The investment banking and wealth management company donated $5,000 toward the inaugural GLOW Corporate Challenge -- a 5K team race that's intended to connect the community and give back to it.

Proceeds will benefit the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming (GLOW) YMCA (similar to the Chase Corporate Challenge that takes place in bigger cities).

The goal is for local businesses to form racing teams, compete in a fun atmosphere, and crown a winner of the GLOW Corporate Cup. Following the race is the region's largest “office party,” where Batavia’s own, the OHMS Band, will perform. Companies are encouraged to set up tents, bring refreshments and prepare to have a good time at this major networking function.

Steven Tufts from the Batavia Office of Merrill Lynch is thrilled with the level of participation.

“We have 14 sponsors and expect more than 400 participants," Tufts said. "The money from the sponsors, after expenses, will go directly to the GLOW area YMCA. Judging from this year’s response, next year should be even bigger.”

The local Merrill Lynch office worked with city officials about location and logistics and set the event for 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, starting -- and ending -- at Centennial Park. Check-in is at 4:30. In the event of inclement weather, the race and concert afterward will still go on.

Registration is $25 per person and you must be 18 or older to participate.

The route has been certified as a USA Track and Field Course and there will be EMS by the finish line for any runner/walker who may need assistance.

Ellicott Avenue will be closed from Washington to Richmond from noon to 10 p.m. the day of the race. Street parking is available, along with parking at the Batavia City Centre on Main Street and the Jerome Center on Bank Street.

You can register online at www.regonline.com/Register/Checkin.aspx?EventID=1247322 or call 585-344-1664.
