It's Friday morning. "Black Friday" is a display of idiocy that has been created and perpetuated by the media. It got me to thinking about our society. It is truly sad that more and more retailers stayed open on Thanksgiving this year. My own sister was unable to enjoy any kind of time with friends and family, and I know personally several other folks that had to work yesterday. Really? Have we as a people forgotten what is really important in life? My fear is, yes.

I can't remember the days of the blue laws. I can only rely on the information shared with me from older generations. No stores open on Sundays or holidays, unless you were a corner store or a mom and pop. I don't know your thoughts, but I believe that break in the week is a wonderful concept. A day to slow down, unwind, reflect and recharge. The 24/7 multitude we have become is, well, unbecoming. No stores needed to be open on Thanksgiving. Was it convenient? I guess it depends who you ask. For the moron that didn't properly plan(me), it was great. For the poor people working ALL DAY LONG, it was ridiculous. I felt genuinely bad that these workers, who aren't paid a great deal, had to forego what is truly important so I could buy a can of black olives. If I didn't have the option of going there, it wouldn't have been the end of the world.

Our corporate culture needs to re-evaluate what's what. While the bottom line is important, it shouldn't come at the expense of morale and tradition.

Alicia Lurye of AK Entertainment is happy to be hosting the "Winter Wonderland of Arts, Crafts & Gifts" this weekend at Batavia Downs Casino. She said this is the first Christmas show at the Downs for many years.

"They just haven't found anyone willing to do it," she said. "And look at the turnout."

A lot of people came to browse and buy what 40 crafters and vendors had to offer:

Tami Burbules of East Pembroke offered free samples of her bread dips. She is selling them in addition to desserts, veggie dips and other treats from Gourmet Creations.

Please take a moment out of your busy day to remember those who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy.  Remember not only those who fought and died in combat, but those who returned home and are now gone.

It is bittersweet to walk through the cemetery and see the brass markers telling us what branch and time of service .  One can imagine them gathering, row after row, near where my dad is buried.  Each year more join the ranks of WW2 veterans who are now at parade rest.  God bless them all.

Better late than never... At Christmas in the City, here in Batavia a couple weeks back, we set up our camera and asked folks what Christmas means to them. Here's what a handful of your friends and neighbors had to say about the holiday:

December 11, 2008 - 10:45am

From the Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern:

The Batavia Days Inn donated over 100 beds to the Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern furniture program.  This generous donation helped GOMOC to almost exhaust an 8 page waiting list of people in need of beds in our community.  This holiday season, many children and families will now have warm beds to sleep in.

The GOMOC Furniture Program collects furniture donations from the commuity and distributes them to those in need.  The service is free to both the community members donating and those in need.  We accept beds, dressers, couches and chairs, kitchen tables, and working appliance. To make a donation, simply call our agency and schedule a pick-up.

The Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern would like to thank the Batavia Days Inn and all the other generous community members who have donated to our furniture program.

We're looking for a family in need. In particular, a family in the Batavia area with young children whose parents will be unable to provide gifts this holiday season. Over the weekend, The Batavian received a request from a reader who is coming to the area with his family during the upcoming holidays. He wrote to us:

"Myself and my family are going to be vacationing in the Batavia area visiting family for the Christmas and New Year's Holiday. We would like to find a family with children who will not be able to provide gifts and/or food for the children."

If you know of a family who might fit the bill, please pass along the information so that we may get them in touch with this giving family from Phoenix. You can reach me via e-mail or by phone: (585) 802-3032. Call anytime. Leave a message if there's no answer.

Every few weeks we stop by the Holland Land Office Museum and chat with Pat Weissend, the museum's director, about some artifact or other interesting something going on at the museum. This time, there was really only one thing to talk about: the Wonderland of Trees. From now until January 3, folks can head down to the museum—check out the Web site for hours—to tour the Wonderland and help raise funds for the museum.

Now, before we get to the video, we would like to ask your help. We've been finding a few problems with the videos uploaded to blip.tv—which is otherwise flawless, with great quality and a large viewing screen. Unfortunately, the videos seem to skip on some computers. Here, we've loaded our video with Pat into both YouTube (top) and blip.tv (bottom). Which looks and runs better for you?
